Alright so I'm about to make a hot take right now

I don’t really enjoy seeing race bending in the Jojo fandom. Like at all. In fact persons in any fandom who go out of their way to make clearly white/light skin characters black/dark just uhhhh shouldn’t do it?

It’s one thing where you wish to give representation where representation is due. However, it’s another thing when you think its justifiable to make one race another just because you say so. In fact it’s just as harmful.

Characters like Josuke and Jotaro are yes ‘mixed’. Though being mixed doesn’t mean you’ll always have dark as hell skin; it also depends on your parents. You could be British or Italian and be pretty much pale. Which is what Joseph and Suzie are respectively. And Tomoko and Sadao are Japanese and you know exactly how that one goes. 

So where does the black come in for Josuke and co?

Skin colour is not a headcanon. Race shouldn’t be something headcanoned. It’s not clothes you can change or a new haircut you get on occasion. Race bending and whitewashing are literally one in the same and it’s messed up that race bending is such a norm.

OP never said Asian people couldn’t have dark skin, the majority of Japan isn’t dark skinned in the first place, but they’re still Asian. It makes me just as uncomfortable when I see someone like Jotaro race bent as when I see someone like Avdol white washed.

Also hating someone for their skin color is literally what racism is. If your mind goes “ Oh I would like this character more if they weren’t this color” it’s racist. If you have to change a character’s race in order to like them, you’re the problem.

Wanting representation is a different story, and we do need more representation in anime. But changing someone’s skin color isn’t representation, because that character wasn’t dark skinned to begin with, your 1k tumblr following seeing a dark skinned Jotaro isn’t going to change anything.

Wanting more dark skinned characters in Jojo isn’t wrong, it’s perfectly valid, but race bending is wrong. You don’t have to be satisfied with the singular black character you’re given either, but you shouldn’t go out and change another character’s race because of it.
