I’ve seen these image everywhere about how Islam ruins culture.

But like, if you go to those countries and meet Muslims from there it’s really not the case.

I’m ethnically from Bangladesh (I also visit Bangladesh at least one every two years) and I don’t wear a hijab and I wear salwar kameez and sarees as and when I want. All other times I’m dressed in jeans and whatnot. There is only one person in my whole family who wears a full burka and niqab.

My grandmother knew two young girls of Bengali descent from the UK who were very orthodox and wore full burka and niqab. They went to Bangladesh because they thought they would feel more comfortable there. But they found that they were still the only ones in the whole village who were dressed as they were and they ended up coming back to the UK.

Obviously countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran are different as they have oppressive governments and laws.

But for the most part people don’t give up culture for the religion.

Islamic weddings are meant to be low-key but try and tell any desi Muslim they can’t have their extravagant three day long wedding bonanzas and you will have a fight on your hands.
