What really fucks me up about people saying Sam going to the cage was some sort of redemption for his actions in season 4 is that Sam undoubtedly thought that too. Sam thought being tortured for years was repentance. Sam couldn’t forgive himself for being abused and manipulated into freeing Lilith so he endured more abuse as punishment. Do you guys think he thought that every day in the cage? That maybe Dean and Bobby would be proud of him and forgive him wherever they were if Lucifer just hurt him again and again and again. I’m going insane.

then he got pulled out of lucifer's cage without a soul and he tries to make up for what he did when he was souless. the cycle: Sam getting abused, Sam making a mistake, and Sam getting punished

Sam during the trials hoping finishing it would cleanse him of his iniquities. Finding salvation in his own suffering, only for both to be usurped.

Also along with redemption maybe he thought he was avoiding his destiny. He finally could be in control despite his possession, despite demon blood, he avoided killing Dean(he wasn't the weapon he was made to be), but still damned himself.

I think Sam not thinking his good deeds/ him saving everyone isn't enough for his repentance is because he can't trust his own judgment. Sam thought he was doing a good thing in s4 when he thought he was killing Lilith/saving the world. Maybe he thinks goodness isn't something that he can claim of himself because it's unclear to him but torture is clear and exact, pain is felt and known, Sam doesn't know goodness.

First of all DUDE YOURE SO RIGHT!!! Everytime he tries to apologize or repent in a normal way he’s told he’s doing something wrong (see: him apologizing in S5 and Dean and Bobby constantly telling him it’s not enough). So pain is the only way he can apologize in a way that’s objective to him. You can also interpret this as to being why he’s so quiet and neutral in the later seasons, he doesn’t want to make a mistake and start the cycle again.

Second of all, your tags are so real. I have to completely separate Supernaturals depiction of Christianity from my own faith because it’s like what are they talking about??😭
