If the 1970’s had a male supermodel it would surely have been Matt Collins. From his humble Pennsylvania beginnings he found himself thrust into a life and career he never expected. Quitting school at age 14 to pursue his love of horses, he became a trainer. Matt toured the horse show circuit and by his early 20s, he was earning $50,000 a year as a rider-trainer. By age 24, at his final horse show, Matt caught the eye of none other than Wilhelmina Cooper, owner of the prestigious modeling agency. Unaware of the world of fashion, celebrity and painfully unaware of his own good looks, Matt almost gave her the brush-off, but figuring he had nothing to lose, signed on the spot. His career took off with 30,0000 fan letters a month. He did some television and film and even had a hit poster but by the 1980’s his career was in decline. As art imitates life, his life was brought to the small screen in the 1983 made for television film Making of a Male Model, with the beautifully tragic Jon-Erik Hexum. Though greatly exaggerated in parts, it was the basic story of Matt's life. Tall and lean, with sandy hair, dark eyes, strong cheekbones, and sullen demeanor, Matt also had wisely invested his money in East coast real estate, as well as continuing to focus on his love of riding and training horses. I can’t find out what became of Matt Collins, after that, only the rumor that he was a casualty in the early days of The AIDS crisis.
