Dean Sage Trailer Evaluation
Weaknesses I understand that most of my images were unfocused this was due to me using the shutter feature to take images more quickly and to save time. If I took the photos individually then I believe that the images would have been focused. The Task – We had to make an animation for oly, we had to use techniques we had learned from olys class.
I wanted my animation to be a stop motion because I really enjoy watching and filming stop motion projects, I decided I was going to make my animation based off my work for Grahams Class which was about a pet rock and how we can advertise and sell it to the public so for this animation class I wanted to make a stop motion advert for the pet rock.
Roles
Tom Smyth – Main Actor (Lonely Child)
Bradley Caffrey – Second Actor (Confused Child)
Reece Daly – Third Actor (Random Dancing Child)
Dean Sage – Cameraman
Planning – Planning went really well, once I knew that we had to use a technique we already have learned I knew that I was going to use stop motion because I really enjoy filming and watching them. I then had to think of a idea of what my Stop Motion was going to be about eventually I was watching stop motion videos on YouTube and it reminded me of my project for Grahams Class about the pet rock and in grahams class we used photos that we made from Photoshop to advertise the pet rock but I thought we could go a step further and actually make a advert for the pet rock so people could actually see what it is. I then had to draw the storyboards I decided I wanted my advert to be advertising how the pet rock is for child and that the pet rock is their friends. So I decided to make the stop motion start of with a sad kid but when the pet rock is eventually introduced the sad kid becomes happy, showing how the pet rock can make sad children happy. I then wanted to emphasis that the pet rock is a friend so I wanted to show the sad child and pet rock doing activities that friends may do.
I then had to find an actual rock so me and a group of friends looked for a rock suitable for the project we wanted a rock that was not to big and not to small after around 10 minutes of searching for a rock we found a rock then we cleaned it up and drew a face on it with a sharpie (permanent marker).
The Filming – The Filming went well as well it was done within the same day we started to film. I decided I wanted to have different types of shots in my stop motion project I also wanted to use zoom ins and zoom outs. I decided to move around the camera taking the pictures with an without the tripod and I did shutter feature however using this does make some images un-focused and blurry here is evidence of having unfocused images in my project.
Also whilst filming we did not realise how bright the lighting was in the room but when we got on to after effects we edited the project to make it look darker which ultimately made the stop motion look better.
The editing – the editing was the most time consuming and complicated part because I had to rename all the images in order starting from 1 to whatever number the last image was. This was very time consuming and took around 40 minutes. And then we had to import them into after effects however because I renamed all the images in order After effects recognised that they were in a numbered order and imported all the images in order. I then placed all the images onto a timeline and made sure they were in order I then removed images that I thought were not good enough, not focused or made the project to longer than what it should have been. Eventually all the images were in order and the project was over 30 seconds long I then had to add a song. I wanted to have a song, which was very cheerful and happy because the project is based around happiness and friendship so I decided to add Will Pherrel Happy Instrumental because the song has a very happy style
Improvements – I would like to change the lighting of each shot because it would save a lot of time editing. But the main change I would like to use is that I would like to have retaken certain shots due to them being unfocused I would have taken. Other than that I think the whole thing went really well and I am happy how the project turned out.
Strengths - Judging from my classmate’s feedback about my project they seemed to have found it funny, music suited very well and they enjoyed all the different types of camera angles and zoom ins and zoom outs that I had used. I also believe the activities I had made the actors do was very suiting for the whole friendship gimmick.
This image shows the actor doing an activity and is having fun.
Weaknesses - I understand that most of my images were unfocused this was due to me using the shutter feature to take images more quickly and to save time. If I took the photos individually then I believe that the images would have been focused.
This image proves that some of the images I had taken were very blurry and unfocused.

Film Trailer Evaluation
The Task: We had to make a film trailer and it could be any genre we like
Group Roles:
Dean Sage - Director
Tom Smyth - Producer
Michael Ihean – Camera Man
Sam Bell – Main Actor
We all grouped up and thought of ideas for what our trailer will be about and what genre it is after I came up with the idea that we base our trailer on a very popular anime called Death Note it is about a young genius who gets possessions of a note book that when someones name is written into the book that person will die by the way of your choosing if however you do not write how they will die then they will die of a heart attack.
We decided we would use the same story but we would use different characters and our own way of how we would like to see the trailer.
Planning:
Planning took more time than what it should have been because we were still deciding who would have which role we all came to an agreement on our roles and Sam was fine with being the main actor for the film trailer, me and Tom were fine with being Director and Producer and Michael was fine with being cameraman. We then had to decide what the trailer would look and sound like (which we eventually went for a dark, scary and mysterious film trailer) , we also had to find out what location we would film at, which we decided we would stay at the college as it would be easier on all of the group. We also had to write a script and think of a somewhat different title because if it was just death note then it would have been an exact copy of the anime title so eventually we decided to call the trailer ‘Death Notepad’ because it was not that different from the original title and it was easy to remember.
The Filming:
Filming went very well, we got all shots within two college days and we got multiple shots that we all suggested to film as we wanted to see what it would look like, we wanted to set the scene so we wanted the scenes to be dark and mysterious to hopefully attract viewers and fans of the anime. We needed to get establishing shots to show where the film was set and what it could tell the viewer about the film so we had got multiple shots of the college so the viewer would know it was about a student we also got multiple shots of Sam to show who the main character of the film was and we got eerie shots to show his descent into insanity.
The editing:
The editing was the most complicated part due to complications into college with not enough macs so people can’t edit their trailers it took us a while each to edit our film trailers. However we still had to find the right sound effects, music and special effects to use in our trailer. I looked up for Dark eerie music and scary sound effects that I could add into my film trailer and when I found the ones I had wanted I downloaded them and added them into the part of the trailer that I felt they would be best suited. I also used a special effect on Final cut pro called fade this is where near the start or end of your clip you could make the clip you have selected. I thought this suited my trailer very well, eventually I started to render the trailer but then I realised the trailer was lacking was any information about the film so I cancelled rendering and went on to Photoshop were I made pictures for the film trailer showing us the title and who worked in the group, I thought this was a very welcome addition onto the trailer as it established the title of the film and who worked in the group.
What would I change? :
If I could change anything it would have been the scene where stabbed Lee we could have used a prop such as a fake knife or something sharp, but other than the that the whole trailer went really well and wouldn’t change anything about it.

Stop Motion
Stop motion is a cinematographic technique that is when you take multiple pictures and make them eventually into a short film, it is a very long progress.
I was in a group with Bradley Caffrey and Tom Smyth and after thinking of many ideas we decided to make our short stop motion film about a skater who hits a random guy with his skateboard and then the guy takes his skateboard and kills the skater. We then drew the storyboards and started taking the pictures. It took around 120 pictures to make the 9 second film it would have taken a long time to take all them pictures but thankfully we found out a way to take multiple pictures with the camera for a short period of time and this would help us a lot.
I think our short stop motion film went really well, I took the pictures whilst Tom and Bradley were acting in the short story, we were taking one picture at a time and we eventually figured out how to make the camera take multiple pictures for short period. This helped us speed up the process and we were done taking pictures within the hour.
Then we started transferring the images on to the Macs then we imported them onto After Effects, We put all the images in order then we dragged them into a timeline, However one of the pictures was corrupt and for one frame of the 9 second film you will see a static image however we eventually rendered it. I think our stop motion went really well the only thing that went wrong was the corrupted picture in the finished short film.
Thaumatrope
Thaumatrope was a toy in the 19th century, you have to cut a circle from a piece of paper, then you draw pictures on each side of the circle then make small holes on the sides of the circle so that you can get a string through each hole then attach the strings to the circle on each side. Whenever the strings are twirled with your fingers. It makes the two images blend together due to the persistence of vision.
When I got given my circle cut out I decided to draw one angry face on side and then one happy face, Then I attached the strings to the piece of paper with help from Ollie, then I started twirling the strings and my Thaumatrope was fine but I think my drawings were a bit to different and I shouldn’t have written “Angry” and “Happy” as I think it sort off ruined the effect.
Cel Animation
This is where you draw a thing and slightly change it frame by frame
EG For a person walking you would draw the person with their right leg out and then next frame you draw then slightly forward with their left leg out.
Our Assignment was to draw an object and make it move around we went on to a programme called adobe photoshop and we had to change the preset and size of the paper, we changed the preset to film and video then changed the size of the paper to PAL D1/DV the width of the page is 720 and the height of it is 575 with a resolution of 72
We then had to add a timeline into the project then add a blank layer we then used the paint brush tool and then we could draw whatever we want then redraw then frame by frame in a slightly different area so that when the pictures were scrolled through it looks like whatever you drew was moving.
I decided to draw a ball that was bouncing all over the screen, I drew the ball on the left side of the screen then frame by frame I drew it going up then down but always moving it the the right of the page so it was bouncing from the left side of the screen to the right.
We then rendered the project in photoshop and we could finally see if the ball looked like it was bouncing from left of the screen to the right.
I think my project came out really well it looked like the ball was bouncing up and down from the left side of the screen to the right side of the screen and the video was 4 seconds long. However the ball I was drawing was always changing size and sometimes looked like a messy circle and also the assignment was very long and took a while as we had to draw a lot depending on how long our video was for example mine was 4 seconds long so that’s around 15 -25 frames
Which is 15-25 drawings.
Cut Out Animation
This is when we had to find a image of someone and cut their heads out using adobe Photoshop then we could put their head onto someone else’s body then we would make their mouth move up ad down making then look like they are talking.
This is my stop animation advert for oly

Proposal and cHARACTER DESIGN
Proposal- I was going to make a trailer for a toy called Pet rock. The technique I will be using to make this trailer is stop motion
It will start of with a lonely kid sitting down looking depressed and lonely we can project these emotions by making the actor frown, then the kid looks up to show an establishing shot of where he is from left to right he will be outside but still on the college campus. Eventually the kid looks down but looks straight up with a surprised expression and then there will be a zoom in on the rock then a zoom in on the kid who is now smiling.
Then the kid and his pet rock will start doing activities such as having a picnic, them chasing each other, the kid and the rock holding each other and going around in circles then the last activity they do is they start laying adown and looking at each other, the camera will zoom in on the rock and then text will come onto the screen saying PET ROCK £9.99 I will add these through photoshop and after effects.
Character Designs- There is only one person going to be in my stop motion short film, I have got one actor to play the role of the lonely kid and that will be Tom Smyth. The character is going to be very quiet, lonely and depressed however when he meets the pet rock he will be very happy, and lively.
