Oh lord, I cannot express my love for this episode enough. The relationship between Jesse and Cesar is exactly a reflection of what would be the ideal relationship for Dean and Cas, in my opinion.Ā
It doesnāt have to be overt, in your face romance. Thatās not something that I would even want, not within the context of the show. I think very few people would actually want the show to suddenly become some teenage romantic drama. This isnāt Twilight or Vampire Diaries. This is Supernatural and what I love about it is itās slightly horror-flick feel, the brotherly bond, the monster fighting and lore, and the ever-lasting battle with the forces of evil.Ā
But I would love to see canon Destiel. Not just because I ship it (though I do, more than almost anything else from any other fandom), but because it would be such a huge step for the LGBTQ+ community. And if they portray Destiel the way they portrayed the relationship between Jesse and Cesar, then we could eliminate a lot of the stereotypes that come with being a gay man.Ā
Jesse and Cesar were portrayed as two hunters who just so happened to be gay. Dean had his initial confusion, but beyond that, the fact that they were gay wasnāt a focal point of the show or the plot. Thatās what I want for Destiel. Of course, I think it might be a bit necessary to establish the bisexual thing for the viewers who would be questioning the long string of sexual escapades Deanās embarked on with women since the beginning of the show. But I donāt want it to take up an entire episode and I donāt want it to be a huge deal. Getting together with Cas shouldnāt focus on the gayness of the relationship, but rather theā¦beauty of it. The inevitability. The passion that goes beyond gender.Ā
Then, after Jesse and Cesar were casually established as gay, their dynamic - the way they interacted with one another - did not suddenly undergo a drastic change, or really any change at all. They werenāt overly affectionate or ridiculously overprotective. Hell, they didnāt even kiss! Iām not saying I wouldnāt love to see at least one Destiel kiss, because then I would be lying, but I am saying that Dean and Castielās dynamic doesnāt have to change. Beyond establishing that theyāre together, the show doesnāt suddenly have to be about their relationship. In fact, it doesnāt even need to mention their relationship or have them interacting in every single episode. And I wouldnāt want them to suddenly be all over each other and kissing all the time. Hopefully, Cas would be around a little more (I mean, I want that whether theyāre together or not), but Iām not saying that every time heās in an episode I need some sort of huge romantic moment between him and Dean. I just want it to be casual, subtleā¦soft.Ā
Maybe they could hook pinkies before they have to part way.Ā
Maybe they could embrace after a life-risking battle or when one of them is particularly distraught.Ā
Maybe they could peck each other on the cheek when they reunite after being separated for significant periods of time.Ā
Maybe we could have a brief mention of Dean getting off the phone with Cas while theyāre on a case.Ā
The possibilities of subtle romance are endless, and none of it has to alter the show. Iāve seen a lot of arguments from Destiel shippers that they wouldnāt want it to become canon because they donāt want that to be what the show is about, but I think that stems from a misconception that a canon Destiel has to resemble fanfic Destiel. I understand the concern and I understand not wanting it, because thatās not what I want either. But thatās why I loved this episode so much; it showed the audience of Destiel shippers who are hesitant or completely against it becoming canon that their fears are slightly misplaced. It showed them how beautiful Destiel could be within canon without completely taking away from the plot and the overall atmosphere of the show.Ā
The LGBTQ+ community has made leaps and bounds both in society and on the screen. Between shows like the 100 and Arrow introducing main characters who are bisexual and shows like Orange is the New Black and How To Get Away With Murder who have canon characters of the gay persuasion, the media has been giving far more attention to the wide variety of sexuality. But even within those somewhat progressive shows, there are issues, and I think Supernatural needs to step up to the plate and set a president for the way TV and Hollywood approach LGBTQ+ characters.Ā
Destiel makes since with the way this season is progressing. There is a golden opportunity for Dean to kiss Cas in the passion of the moment when he returns from being possessed by Lucifer, so it wouldnāt feel awkward. And this last episode has shown us exactly how the LGBTQ+ community fits inside the hunting world.Ā
