"Oh, right."  Charlie cleared his throat, "Well, sometimes people have kids and they don’t really…they’re not ready to be parents, so…they make sure that their child goes to someone who can take care of him, which is why I was raised by Grandpa instead."

Dean didn't understand fully, but nodded anyways, "I wish grampa was living with us instead."

Dean nodded, before looking down at his food, “Why did they leave?”

"Well, they went to go see Grandpa, but they’ll be back at the house soon, I just wanted some time to explain to you what’s going on."

"You don’t have to, but you do have to be nice to them, they’re guests in our home and that’s what we have to do, do you understand."

Dean nodded, before looking down at his food, "Why did they leave?"

"but that’s his room! that’s not fair. whyu don’t they have a house? Are they poor?"

"They need some help right now, and they’re family, so if they need help, we’re going to be the bigger people and give it them, they’re my parents, just like I’m your father and we’re doing what’s right."

"What? No. It’s our house, they acn go to their house. It’s my house, my room. It’s too small already!"

"They don’t have a house anymore, buddy, that’s why they’re staying with us.  They’ll have their own place too, and you don’t have to give up your room, Forrest is going to stay in my room and they’ll stay in his room."

 Dean ate the fries slowly, listening to his dad. He was seven now. He was smart. He knew stuff.

"Her face looked weird. Why did it look tight and wrinkly?"

"Well, she’s…older, that sometimes happens to older ladies, but the two of them are going to be living in our house for a little while.  They’re both going to have their own jobs, but it’s going to be a little crowded in our house for a bit."

"What? No. It's our house, they acn go to their house. It's my house, my room. It's too small already!"

Only if that person is being a jack…being a jerk.  Then Daddy has to set them straight.

Right, but you have to be at least 21 before you can do things like that, it’s the law.

Charlie had sent his mother away for a few hours so that he could explain to Dean what was going to be happening.  He scooped up Forrest and he took the boys out to get some food so that they could all talk.

“So I know you’re wondering who that woman who came over today was.  Well, I’ve told you some stories about when I was growing up and how I was raised by Grandpa because my mother wasn’t around?”

Dean didn’t say anything, so Charlie kept going, “Well, that woman you saw today was my mother and she and my father are going to be staying with us for a little while, until they can find their own place and can live on their own.   They needed some help and so we’re going to help them for a little while, do you understand?”

Dean lept up onto the bed, hugging his father, “Thank you daddy! Thank you! I wanna go somewhere I can learn lots of stuff! With nice teachers who smile, and where I have can boy friends and be me and have the coolest clothes!”

Charlie smiled and hugged Dean back, “I’m glad we were able to work this out.  Is there anything else you need to talk about, while we’re here and talking?”

He rubbed his eyes, hugging his dad tightly, “I don’t know … I just … do you have to work so much? When you get home you’re so tired, and you spend more time with Forrest and … and we don’t play as much.”

"I know it’s hard buddy, but right now we need the money and that means I have to work, sometimes I have to work more to make that work, and right now, Forrest is at an age where he needs a lot of attention, since he’s learning how to walk and talk, you went through that phase too, but things will get better soon."

Rubbing his face, he nodded again, "I know ... I just. You said we could talk so ... yeah."
