A volcano is erupting on our closest island neighbour (100 miles away) and the ash plume is drifting over us now. At 8:41 in the morning the sky is as dark as dusk. We can't see the sun and the air smells like sulphur.

I keep thinking of how back in the long-ago days when there was no way for news to travel the way it does, people experiencing something like this with no immediate explanation for it must have wondered if it was the end of the world.

Hey, I'm a professional translator and subtitler and I've worked for Netflix, and can tell you that it's not the translators fault, prob. Netflix has the most restrictive parameters for subs I've ever seen (and I've been in the field for 10 yrs). They limit your character count and reading speed so much that you have to cram what would be three subs into one sub only. In some cases they even send you the timed file and you have to use it as is, without changing a tenth of a second. Whenever(1/2)

(2/2) Whenever I do some show for Netflix, my agency always gives me the option of just not putting my name at the end, because a lot of us (translators) are just embarrassed about the end product, due to NF's restrictions.

oh yeah it’s pretty clear i think that netflix has a ton of rules and restrictions when it comes to subs bc i really can’t imagine anyone looking at some of these translations and willingly being like yes i have captured the essence of this line so i don’t think anybody puts total blame directly on the individual translators when it’s pretty clearly a problem with netflix as a whole, especially since there’s literally a different translator for like every episode they can’t all be equally bad lmao like i understand WHY netflix is like this but.....if they’re gonna eventually have a monopoly on the market than it’s just kinda sad for viewers. thanks for ur message tho this is really interesting to know!!!!! i do also wonder tho sometimes i notice when i go rewatch something that a line has been change over the course of like a day like this one from the run on ep 15 preview said this the day it aired 

and then was changed to this the next day 

like it’s probably bc the translators were different for each ep so the line translation was changed but i feel like that just confirms that the second translator COULD have put a more accurate sub but choose something else i mean i’m sure she had her reasons lol (sorry girl i know it’s hard to make a living feel free to come critique me at my job) but i feel like that was an important detail lmao but i’ve noticed other lines changed too outside of previews so i wonder why they specifically go back to do that sometimes especially bc i notice that it usually makes the meaning more vague than originally
