Hi Hank! Hope you’re well :) I’ve been trying to recovery from self harm over the past twelve months and the other night I slipped up after being five months clean. My question to you is, when you chose recovery, did you have those moments too? You do NOT have to answer this publicly which is why I’m not anon. I’m working with an excellent psychologist and trying to make myself feel positive about the future and you are one of my recovery inspirations. Thanks for your time <3

Yes, I stopped and re-started a few times. To be totally honest with you, I still want to cut sometimes when I’m going through something especially awful and that’s after 16 years. My friend Nick just wrote a post about working on his depression and he said it better than I could (and this is something I wish I’d been able to read when I was younger):

See, one of the first things I learned in this whole process was that I will never be “fixed” because I was never “broken.” It’s just a part of who I am. I can make improvements, but the key is to learn how to react when my brain does what it does. This was critical to my initial recovery. Knowing that the work itself was the solution.

The whole post is here. I am still working. I work on myself every day. It sounds exhausting, but it’s not. It’s life, and it is often times wonderful.
