Eeeee!!!! @lemonthrift's Hair on Soap is here! And my stickers are inside 🤓. I've already been reading bits here and there and cracking up. You DON'T look like a space alien Michelle, except when you do and then you're a super cute one!
The thing about keeping a beehive but not taking the honey is that the bees will begin to feel really cramped. Atm I'm on mobile and I'm short on time but if I wasn't Id provide sources and such, but the just of it is that when bees feel cramped they swarm (they make a new queen and then half of the population goes off to live on their own) and most swarms die. It's actually important to take honey from bees or else they outdo themselves. Whether or not you use said honey is up to you.
Is there a way to ensure that the hive ‘empties’ naturally so that the bees have enough to consume in the winter but not so much that they feel cramped? Are there any vegan bee keepers who can talk to us?
Bees consume the honey over the winter, they won't make so much that they will feel cramped if you aren't removing frames.

This had me laughing so hard.
This doesn't take into account the money saved when the public is healthier, when we have a more educated work force that can increase GDP, safer infrastructure that reduced accidents and avoids constant repair costs. This is also over 10 years, not per year.
A simple example - if someone doesn't have access to health insurance, they are likely also poor, and unable to pay for healthcare costs out of pocket. They might wait until an infection, a UTI, for example, that could have been easily treated with a course of antibiotics is out of control, and they end up in the hospital. This will cost approximately $10,000, vs less that $300 for the dr visit, lab tests, and medicine. If the patient can't pay this, then taxpayers will end up taking up the bill anyways, or the person will file bankruptcy which will ruin their credit score, make their earning potential even lower, and likely decrease their ability to work because they may no longer have a car/steady address, etc.
The original reason why they are poor most likely has to do with lack of access to decent education from a young age, inability to afford or get into college (due to poor education and other circumstances), and inability to get other training for a better paying job. This person is also more likely to have a child young, not be able to afford to care for the child properly, and will need to rely on government assistance to feed the child through EBT programs and the school lunch program. This child is more likely to also go through this same exact cycle again, if they are not able to access decent education/training, a living wage, or affordable healthcare. This same child is also more likely to eat poorly, because the the school lunch program and is underfunded and feeds kids crap like pizza and fries, which, along with the types of food that are affordable on the average EBT allowance, aren't healthy and lead to expensive diseases like diabetes.
SOMEONE does have to pay for it, not matter what. Republicans love to say that churches should be doing these types of things, but they DON'T. We should start investing in our citizens, and not corporations. We could pay for free college tuition if we stopped giving subsidies to fortune 500 companies . We could fund a free jobs program if we stopped paying out subsidies to "farmers" who simply owned land that was farmed in the 80s and may not even farm at all. The US population would eat a hell of a lot better and therefor be healthier (and reduce health costs) if we stopped subsidizing the corn, meat, and dairy industries, and maybe started putting that money into crops like healthy starches/proteins (beans, potatoes, etc.), fruits, and vegetables. This would conveniently also save states like CA a ton of water each year. We spend tons of money, but it mostly goes to making that big business is being kept healthy and happy, and that everyone else is just getting by so they won't pay attention to how screwed up everything is. There are plenty of places the government can cut spending, but that would require some balls on the part of congress to stand up to big business and stand up for the interest of the vast majority of people in this country.
If you’re dissatisfied with how your government works (and you should be) get up and do something. Organize. Run for office. Pick up a sign. Write a book. Start small. Research and then choose where your money goes. Start a movement. Go on TV. March. Speak out. Be like Will Potter or Harriet Tubman or Peter Garrett. Don’t be another butt-hurt kid with a vendetta sitting in front of his computer screen typing “BOYCOT” into a Tumblr post without considering the repercussions.

Here’s what politics looks like if you take out the men
Out of the 22 people running for president in 2016, only two of them are women. Elle U.K. is confronting this imbalance directly through the magazine’s #MoreWomen campaign, launched on Oct. 1 to celebrate women’s global power. Their eye-opening launch video shows how easy it is to make full rooms seemingly sparse.

“We’re on the slow plan to get over her terrible beginnings. She has a lot of PTSD. She was born in a kill shelter so she spent the first four months of her life in a cage. She’s terrified of the outside world. When I first brought her home, she wouldn’t even leave her carrier for the first three days. I had to buy a white noise box and insulate the whole apartment because she was so scared of noise. It took us a whole year before I could get her to leave the apartment. But now there are some mornings when she even asks to go outside. She tends to change her mind once we get to the elevator, but I always give her time to regroup, and she’s happy when we finally get outside. It’s so great to see her enjoy the outdoors. The happiness may only stick for a few moments at a time, but it’s so great to see.”
On Randall’s Island, a stone’s throw from east Manhattan’s shoreline, hundreds of Native American artists, educators, dancers and performers gathered all weekend for a powwow to honor indigenous people around the world. Instead of Columbus Day, they’re here to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, which is devoted to healing and lifting up the rich history and culture of Native Americans. The mood here is spirited and hopeful despite the circumstances.

A peaceful rally over the presumed massacre of 43 missing students ended with violence and destruction in Mexico City, with protesters calling for the president to stand down. Thousands marched along Mexico City’s main boulevard, chanting for Enrique Pena Nieto to resign and waving blackened flags of the country in anger over the case of the missing students. They echoed ‘you are not alone’ to parents of the missing who joined the rally at the Angel of Independence Monument. Dec2 2014 Reuters/AFP/AP/BBC
