When Pacific Rim (2013) came out, I was just out of college, about four months into my first steady job (working at Dunkin' Donuts for minimum wage), and excited about the fact I had an income. Unfortunately I was also deeply into a phase where, when I watched a movie or played a game I really liked, I'd buy a tie-in novel and read it.

Most of these things suck. Practically everything by William C. Dietz.

All except the Pacific Rim tie-in novel. Which in and of itself isn't particularly impressive, and makes some changes I don't like (for example, Raleigh kisses Mako at the end), but it had one thing going for it:

Almost every chapter ended with a dossier or some other bit of cool extended lore and fuck it was awesome. It's given me brainworms for a decade. I still think about those one-two page dossiers and little snippets
