I was talking with some friends what the meaning of these new lyrics we got could be... what’s the inspiration behind them? You didn’t ask for it but I’d like to share some interesting things we found:
At first I thought this was a sad song, making reference to the lockdown and how heavy it was for us emotionally.
But know I think this might actually be a song about hope...
Starting with the name “Wildflower and barleys”. Barleys have a particular meaning in Ireland’s history... my friend @caroline, shared a with me a wonderful reading that tells the story of Irish soldiers and how in the 1798 rebellion, they were known to carry barley and oats in their pockets for sustenance during wartime. As the rebellion failed, thousands of dead rebels were buried in unmarked "croppy graves" all over the southeast of Ireland, and the barley from their pockets took root. Every spring, for years after the rebellion failed, barley would grow up through the soil, providing an incredibly powerful image of Irish strength and resilience to the generations who followed. So maybe he wanted to tell this in his way, even after tragedy, there’s life and there’s hope ✨ The lines “departure as death” “Some close to the surface, some close to the casket” I think reflects the last 12 months, as he likes to do... people fighting to stay alive, grief, loss, pain, death. Next line “I feel as useful as dirt” which was a very sad line for me, as when I think of dirt, I think of something with not much worth, filthy, etc. But then a friend told me “When you are a farmer you understand that line from a different perspective!” And I was like 🤯 it’s true, dirt is a part of soil, and soil is a critical part of successful agriculture which is vital for us. So there we go again, maybe it’s about hope ✨. It all ends with a bittersweet “with all things God allows remain above ground Like grief and sweet memory”... Yes it’s hard, but we can also be happy and hopeful cause we built memories with those we lost, and that will keep them alive forever 🖤 Truth is, only Andrew knows what it means, and this is so open to interpretation for each person. What do you think? 🌻 Thanks for reading 🥰
