Two Different Tears
âCry,â he quirks his lips up at the effort sheâs putting in. Stronger than he thought then. He instantly respects this girl, whoever she is.Â
âYou are too right? A Slytherin I mean?â He huffs a humorless laugh, âFunny how they think because we got a green tie that makes us heartless.â
You nodded, not missing the small quirk of a smile. It made you feel better as the air lightened a bit.
âYeah, I am.â It really makes you wonder honestly. Even the younger students would cower a bit if they saw a Slytherin student and you could only guess itâs because of what happened all those years ago. Which was silly to say the least. âPeople tend to fear what they donât understand I guess.â
âPretty fucked up,â Cry huffs in vague amusement, âAt least we know who we are⊠Sort of.âÂ
He pulls his wand from his hoodie pocket, twirls it between his fingers before letting a hot air charm warm a bubble around the two of them. He sits in the silence Joel provides, hopes that she isnât looking for idle chatter because god knows heâs horrible at carrying a conversation. Cry curses, not for the first time, that heâs not good for anything except silent comfort and a wand.
You hum in agreement and put your head on your knees. Warm air was nice since the greenhouse door was still open. You should make sure to close it behind you so the plants don't die from cold.
There isn't much to say and the silence is comfortable. You don't know this guy at all but you feel a kind of kinship with him. It may be foolish, but you didn't think he'd try to hurt you or mock you like the others. He seemed to hold those same pains and clearly didn't want to inflict them on other people.
Approach
Jack gave her a reassuring smile, ignoring the use of that name. Now was not the time to get bothered by it, not when Joel was a mess. She stood up, holding out a hand for Joel to take.Â
âYou ready to go back inside? You can get cleaned up and put on some warm clothes.â Jack asked, trying to keep her smile in place.Â
You nodded and took your friends hand to get up. Your friend. That's...well. You suppose Jack really is your friend. It feels good to think about.
Walking out into the cold you regret running out but this'll just be your life for now.
"Thank you for coming for me."
Chatter Box
You shook your head. âI donât know. Iâd feel so out of place with that crowd.â The Yule Ball always sounded a bit beneath you in terms of actual balls that youâve attended, but you donât want to spoil Jackâs fun.
âGod, no Iâd be embarrassed to death.â You laughed. You werenât popular enough to be nominated anyway so itâs nothing to worry about really.
âOh, câmon! Itâll be fun!â Jack exclaimed, trying to convince her to come. It was one of those social events that Jack exceled at; one of the few times she didnât feel like she had to stay with her house.
âYou never know. Especially since youâre hanging out with Lawrence, heâs really popular.âÂ
You blushed at the idea of being at the ball with Lawrence, or even Bruce for that matter. You wondered if you could gather the courage to even ask, but shook your head. Itâd probably never happen why dwell?
âI-I donât know. Besides the teachers always swamp everyone with homework over break whether we stayed or not. I donât know if Iâll even have time.â Now you were just making excuses. But honestly, the idea of going to the ball made you self conscious, like everyone would be staring at you.
Jack laughed, a light, soft laugh. She understood that for some people social events could be a scary thing; but she also understood that the only way to get over that fear was to face it. A ball wasnât that big of a deal.Â
âYou can worry about homework after the ball. Itâll be fun, and besides, you can leave anytime you want if itâs so uncool to you.â Jack tried to reason with Joel, a small smile on her face.
"Well...well I guess you're right." It not like she wasn't, you were just too nervous to go. "I'll think about it, I don't know." You say shaking your head.
"How's your project for art going by the way? I hadn't seen your canvas yet."
Where We Shouldn't Be
You smile brightly at your boyfriend, happy to see him but masking the nervous energy you felt at his door. âHey, baby.â You greet as you walk in.
Sitting down on the corner of Bruceâs bed, you sighed, rubbing your eyes in exasperation. Youâve literally been having the worst day of your life and you needed a break from the constant stares and whispers. You couldnât even cry in your dorm less your dorm mates see you so you had to hide yourself away in the snow of the gardens to even do that. You had washed your face fifteen times before coming here, hoping you could just pass off the blame of your red nose and eyes to the cold of winter.
But enough of that. Bruce always makes you feel better so you shouldnât think about it anymore. Youâre safe here.
âNothing really.â You say, putting your hands down to your lap and smiling up at him. âI just missed you.â
For a moment he canât help but wonder how Joel even got in here, how she tricked the stairs into letting her up. But sheâs smart, so he doesnât ponder for too long. Whatever she did, sheâs here right now.
âItâs good to see you,â Bruce says, sitting beside her, âHow are you?â
You scooted closer and rested your head and put your head on his shoulder before playfully smiling up at him. "Better now that I'm with you."
You wonder how long until his dorm mates actually come in but regardless you don't care. Taking Jackie's advice, you'll just let them talk; no point in letting other people's opinions ruin your own happiness.
"Oh, did you do the Transfiguration homework for the bird conjuring thing." You figured it out but performing the task wasn't as easy. You'll catch on soon if you practice enough you suppose.
Apologies
You perk up at the offer. A blush threatened to reach your ears and you could hear your blood pumping in your chest. His office? The greenhouse? Does this mean he enjoys your company? Oh god, what does that even mean?
âI-IâŠâ Fuck, donât stutter Joel. You shut your mouth and tried again. âThank you. Iâll be sure to visit you when I can.â He probably doesnât mean it the way you think he does. He only sees you as a student, of course he would offer to let you visit his office.
The offer seems to fluster her, but apparently in a good way. Heâs grateful sheâs genuine about taking him up on the offer, seeing as how she doesnât get along too terribly with other students. Or sheâs a great actress, in which case heâll have a peaceful, lonely break.
âYou need anything?â he asks.
"Um, could you see if there are any blankets actually?" You had bloodied the one you sat upon and the nurse took it away with your stockings. It was surprisingly cold in the infirmary but you suppose it makes sense since its winter and this is still just a old castle without central heating. All the fire placed and torches helped more than you expected, but you were sure there was a spell to keep more occupied rooms warm.
Keep Your Enemies Closer
You didnât know what to say to that. Ryan wasnât exactly the first person on your list of people youâd like to see but he definitely made you feel safer. Especially after that last comment.
Accepting the handkerchief, you wiped your eyes and looked back up at him with a vacant sadness. âThereâs no point.â
âThere is point, iâm a prefect I could get them detentions if I wanted. However, I have a better way of dealing with them.â He was never much of a touchy person, however he still reached out to grab her hands. âI will defend a ladies honor, as king of the castle it is my duty.â There was a certain falseness about this claim, as if Ryan was on stage trying to be a character. The words however had truth plainly masked under it.
You didn't know how to react to that. It was obvious he was just exaggerating with the wording but you could feel the seriousness in his tone and the softness in his hands. He wouldn't lie to you. You felt warm in his grasp even after having just raced through the snow and for whatever reason you trust him.
"I don't...I don't know who. It's a lot of people. It feels like it's almost everyone whispering about me I-I don't know what I did Ryan." You felt helpless, your voice trembling the more you spoke. Worse, you felt weak. It hurt to be so weak in front of him and you could only hope he wouldn't hold it against you.

Approach
You froze when you heard a voice, instinctively silencing and tucking yourself in to hide yourself. It took a moment to register that whoever it was surely already saw you and there was probably no point in hiding anyway. Fuck, why canât you even have this. Sniffling and wiping your eyes before turning to look at who entered, you were taken aback by who it was.
âJ-Jack, I-â The other girl came to sit next to you and covered you with her coat. The gesture by itself made tears well up in your eyes again. You didnât know what to say. Should you tell the truth? Would she even believe you? Words stopped in your throat and you looked down at your feet in shame.
âHey, câmon. Whatever it is, itâs going to be okay. Iâm here for you, itâs okay.â Jack tried in a soothing voice, watching the girl with worried eyes. She had no clue what could possibly trigger this; Joel was always so strong and put together, it was awful to see her fall apart like this.
âYou can tell me whatâs wrong. I just want to help you, I promise.â Jack spoke again, rubbing her back with soothing circles. She didnât have much experience comforting people, but she hoped this was enough to at least find out what was wrong with her.
You looked down and swallowed, feeling stupid and childish for being so pitiful in front of Jack. You hated for anyone to see you this way.
âI- Someone nominated me for the ball and everyone is spreading rumors about me.â You said, trying and failing to keep your tears in. âI-I didnât do any thing, I didnât even nominate myself but they keep lying about me.â You really didnât understand. You may scare people off with your colder personality but youâve never done anything to warrant anything to this degree.
âI- Iâm sorry people can be so awful.â Jack tried, wanting to comfort her. âTheyâre just jealous that they didnât get nominated; people are selfish sometimes.â
âI know you didnât nominate yourself. You didnât even want to go to the ball.â Jack continued rubbing her back, trying to soothe her. âDonât listen to those people; theyâre horrid and cruel. Theyâll forget about this soon and move on to the next horrible rumor. Youâll be okay.â
You swallowed and nodded, trying to wipe more of the tears that came down your cheeks. She was right. You shouldn't've gotten so worked up over it; this isn't the first time something like this has happened and it surely won't be the last so maybe it'd be best to steel your heart a bit more.
"I know." You sniffled. "Thanks Jackie."
Chatter Box
You shook your head. âI donât know. Iâd feel so out of place with that crowd.â The Yule Ball always sounded a bit beneath you in terms of actual balls that youâve attended, but you donât want to spoil Jackâs fun.

Two Different Tears
You barely noticed someone walking into the greenhouse. You were too wrapped up in your own taunting thoughts to notice until someone sat down beside you and made you gasp.
Who is this? Youâve never seen the kid in your life so naturally you scooted away in fear. Was this one of those kids whoâve come to poke fun at you? You didnât know you couldnât tell but you wanted him to leave.
âG-Go away, leave me alone.â You said through your tears unsure of your own words.
He raises an eyebrow and shrugs, but doesnât move. He leans on his knees instead and glares halfheartedly out the open green house doors. This girl, whoever she is, doesnât deserve to be crying. She doesnât deserve the awful thoughts heâs sure are swirling in her head. He presses his lips together before sighing and murmuring, âMy roommate nominated me for Yule King as a joke.â
You furrowed your eyes, confused when he didnât leave and instead just glared out the doorway. You didnât know what his intentions were but you on the other hand had every intention to tell him to leave again.
Just when you were about to yell, he spoke again and you felt yourself soften. Really? So he was in the same boat as you then? You think you heard the kids murmur meanly about someone else on the ballot too but you were too busy trying to drown them out to listen for a name.
âSomeone nominated me and everyone is spreading rumors about me.â Why are you telling him this? Out of solidarity? Who knows.
Cryâs frown deepens as Joel speaks and he leans back to shake his head, âThat sucks.â He bites out, and he means it, he really does. He hates when people push into anotherâs business, loathes that people think they have some kind of right to talk about otherâs lives. He says as much to her, eyes not leaving the door, like heâs waiting for someone to come in and find them.Â
The greenhouse is calming to Cry. While he spends an awful amount of time in the woods alone, he likes the somehow secluded pocket of nature that the greenhouse provides him. It calms him, and he thinks maybe it does the same for the girl.
You weren't sure what to say or do. He didn't seem to have ill intent and he definitely wasn't leaving.
Wiping the stray tear streaks on your cheeks, you gathered what little courage you had left to try and ask who he was.
"You're a Slytherin right? My name is Joel Rubin."
