Fool like me || Closed

@themagictrainhasnobreaks Ryan wasn’t sure what had possessed him to ask Ray to hogsmeade that weekend of the break. It had been a spur of the moment thing, and even if he didn’t make it sound like a date that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to be dressing a bit nicer then he should have. So he headed to Rays dorm, knocking slowly on  the door and rocking on his heels as he waited. He really hoped Ray didn’t just decide not to go, he would really like to treat ray like the poor wolf deserved.

Ray liked Ryan. He truly did. The tiger was nice and calm with him, and he was sweet. He liked the dynamic they had - they didn’t really know each other well quite yet, but they were comfortable - on a level of trust Ray was on with only one other person in his life.

Ryan deserved that spot, too.

The knock on his dorm door made him whine slightly, not wanting to move from his warm bed. “Come in,” He called, curling up against the headboard.

Ryan peaked into the room, smiling softly at the boy. Ryan had no idea, why he was so pleased to see Ray, especially seeing him curled up in the bed like an adorable animal.   Ryan slowly walked over, finishing in his pocket for a small chocolate bar, handing it to Ray with a soft chuckle ,” It’s not a box of chocolate, but besdt I could do at the moment.”

Ray smiled at Ryan as he walked in, patting the empty space next to him. Being handed a bar of chocolate was a bit surprising, and even highly flattering. He flushed gently, smiling his thanks.

“Thank you, Ry. I really appreciate it.” He hummed, trying not to seem eager as he started to open it, curling up a little more and making a happy hum.

“What’s up? Did you need something? And why the chocolate?” He giggled softly.

“Wondering if uh, you would want to go to hogsmeade with me. Y’know to have fun.” He really wish he didn’t sound so emotionless, That always seemed to be his default emotion when nervous or angry. “Also, I mean. Thought you might like it is all. It’s the expensive kind.” He slowly sat beside him, relaxing back without completely laying beside the other.

Ryan took the letter, turning it over in his  hands with a sigh. He glanced up at Burnie shrugging slightly. “Classes have been fine, same as normal. I have met some people, I don’t know if friends is a right word. They seem nice enough.” 

Perhaps friends were a right word. He rather not give his trust to easily to strangers. Even if he wanted to. His cousins wouldn’t approve, then he would have another letter sent to him. “how bad is the letter? Do I want to know?”

“I didn’t read it,” Burnie supplies as he folds the documents the Haywoods had shoved onto his desk in half and lets them float to the fire to burn, “I can’t imagine it’s attractive though. Listen, Ryan, there’s something I wanted to discuss with you while you were here. Your parents have been… Increasingly radical the closer it gets to the end of your schooling and I just… Wanted to know if you had plans for after school.”

Ryan had been asked that question before, by Joel during the career counselling at the end of the fifth year. However, Ryan had simply written it off and made an excuse as to what he was going to do, something that would fit into the classes he enjoyed most. Ryan had no idea what his future plans were, he wanted to avoid his parents plans if anything. However considering he had no idea what job he wanted, where he was to go. It was more lily then not he’d be forced into whatever plan they had for him, which scared Ryan. “...plans?” He couldn’t think of an excuse, and Burnie was always the hardest to lie to. He was the nicest there, and the one Ryan was the most guarded around. Well besides Joel, he didn’t trust Joel.

It had been years since they had spoken. Four years, to be exact, give or take a few months. In that time, Gavin had done a lot of looking inside himself. Once a Haywood, always a Haywood, he’d found out first year. Ryan.. hadn’t been the same. Those weren’t the eyes Gavin used to get lost in for brief moments when the other boy would smile, the eyes that had cried before so many times when he was picked on, the eyes Gavin had wiped dry afterward, that held so much emotion in them, that had been so sad they’d broken his heart on more than one occasion.. Those weren’t His Ryan’s eyes. Those eyes held nothing but a cold darkness that unsettled Gavin’s very being.

Perhaps that’s why he startles so badly when he looks up at the one he’d bumped into, and sees just a flash of what used to be in those eyes. He’s not sure what part scares him the most anymore.

Ryan hadn’t been avoiding Gavin, no, that totally wasn’t what he was doing. He was just, busy. That’s what it had been. What had taken years to force upon him, broke so easily. It was rather surprising, when things that were so hazy in his second year, those emotions he was starting to sort on in his second year, had slowly become a bit more solid in his third. Solid enough for him to realize what he wanted. Not what his parents had planned. So why avoid Gavin? Why avoid his best friend, who tried his hardest to take care f him? Because he was ashamed, ashamed he had broken so easily when he was without the other. So seeing him again, after all those years, hearing him speak to him. Ryan cracked. He tried so hard to keep  up that stoic facade, of course Gavin was the one to break it.  “Gavin, I missed you.”

When Gavin speaks Ryan’s name again, it’s in a breathy whisper. It sounds even perhaps a little shaky, like the Ravenclaw enby is afraid of something. Afraid of being wrong, perhaps? Who really knows.

“I.. I missed you, too. Are you..?”

Better? Back to normal? Not a brick wall? None of those sound appropriate to ask.

“..Are you okay?”

“Define okay.” He chuckled softly, glancing down at Gavin. He never felt okay, but he felt different. Different then he felt the last time he talked to Gavin.  “You changed so much, one thing did stay the same though. your nose. “He chuckled a bit, holding out his hand to the other. A hug was to personal right? A hug was way to intimate for two friends who avoided each other for almost five years.

Instead of taking the boy’s hand and giving the offended huff he wants to, Gavin just finds himself with his arms around Ryan, holding him close. A hug is probably too intimate for this situation, but this Ravenclaw never did have many physical boundaries. And this hug was probably something he’s needed for a while now, anyway.

He just lets it happen, hiding his face right in Ryan’s neck.

Ryan tensed up, his hand inching towards his wand but he stopped himself.  This was Gavin. Not one of his cousins, or his parents. Gavin wouldn’t do that to him. At least he hoped not.  He slowly wrapped his arms around Gavin, holding him close and eventually relaxing. He did however tense when the other buried into his neck, causing him to take a deep breath, gently patting his head.

You didn’t know what to say to that. Ryan wasn’t exactly the first person on your list of people you’d like to see but he definitely made you feel safer. Especially after that last comment.

Accepting the handkerchief, you wiped your eyes and looked back up at him with a vacant sadness. “There’s no point.”

“There is point, i’m a prefect I could get them detentions if I wanted. However, I have a better way of dealing with them.” He was never much of a touchy person, however he still reached out to grab her hands. “I will defend a ladies honor, as king of the castle it is my duty.” There was a certain falseness about this claim, as if Ryan was on stage trying to be a character. The words however had truth plainly masked under it.

Ryan could only chuckled softly, glancing at the few Gryffindors further down who didn’t seem to enjoy his presence. “I’m not sure your table would be very fond of me taking a seat Jack. Thank you for the offer however.”

He slowly reached over Jack however, taking a piece of toast and giving him a good natured grin. “Look see? food. i’m fine.”

Jack waved a dismissive hand in the direction of the table. “They don’t care. Half of us have friends in Slytherin.” He glared at the few who showed distaste. His glared moved to the single piece of toast.

“Y'need more than that, come on!” He laughed, putting together a plate and pushing it towards him. “Sit,” he insisted.

Ryan sighed. God this boy was persistent. He kind of liked it to be honest. Slowly Ryan took a seat, eating the toast he had already picked up first. “So what year are you?” Ryan hummed,hoping to at least make some idle conversation. Strange, he already was eating breakfast with some kid he didn’t know, when he normally took a week to even think about talking to someone else.

Jack grinned triumphantly at Ryan as he sat down. “I’m a 5th year. It sucks, if I’m being honest. OWLs’re a bunch o’ bull.” He munched at his own breakfast.

“Thank ye again, fer bringin’ my book to me. I’ve forgotten it so many times I lost count. The Professor probably would’ve killed me if I forgot it again.”

Ryan glanced at him, nodding. “owls do suck, wait till you have to take NEWTS, less in class time in 6th year, more homework. School work? Either way.” He nodded, quickly moving to continue to eat rather then talk. “Yeah, books aren’t fun. When you have enough money it doesn’t matter much. At least my cousins seem to think so.”

Ryan at first was a little worried, but allowed his teacher to touch him. He was sure Jeremy wasn’t going to hurt him. Frankly if Jeremy wasn’t a much older wizard Ryan probably had a height advantage on Jeremy, however muscle mass he wasn’t sure.  Still, Jeremy was a pretty nice professor, Ryan doubted he would. Ryan couldn’t help but shrug at the last part, following quickly after the other, staying close to Jeremy to keep his face hidden better.

The castle is so massive it takes a few minutes to reach the greenhouse, even with the considerable pace Jeremy has set. Thankfully, Ryan seems willing enough to follow him, so there’s no threats or bribery necessary. When they reach their destination, Jeremy instructs Ryan to sit in the nearest chair, wishing his legs were longer so he could get to the plants faster. He picks them quickly, bringing them back to Ryan along with a mortar and pestle.

“Alright, I just gotta grind them and add some water, okay?” he says, setting the supplies down on a table of sprouts so he can start tearing the leaves apart.

Ryan had taken his seat with little complaints, taking his wand and rolling it in his hands on instinct.  The green house was beautiful, full of all kinds of flora. Some of which didn’t like Ryan to much and Ryan took more caution with that then most would.  Either way when the professor started to talk he listened, perking up and nodding as he watched the other work. Just a little water and the dull burn would stop. That was good. He hopped the visual part of the irritation wanted to leave also.  Slowly he glanced up at Jeremy, watching his work with a curious hum. “ How long have you been a professor here sir?”

“Oh, I just started this year, actually,” he says, the question breaking his concentration for a moment. He takes the watering can sitting on the table, grateful that there’s some water still left in it. He pours in just enough to make a thick paste with the crushed plants, making sure it’s mixed well.

“Alright, I’m just gonna put this on the affected area, okay?” He says, careful to approach slowly and explain everything so Ryan doesn’t get spooked, “It has to stay on for at least three minutes, maybe a little longer. We’ll see.” There’s no brush lying around nearby, so he uses his fingers to spread the mixture onto the reddened skin, concentrating to make sure he covers all of it.

Ryan frowned a bit, had it really been only this year? Ryan really was bad at keeping time. He watched him work, looking rather interest with a hum. “reminds me a bit of potions,” He murmured as he watched. He couldn’t help but flinch, glancing at the others hand nervously as the other touched his face. He may have let him touch his face before, but this time he was letting him spread a cold wet mixture on his skin. This was definitely something he wasn’t expecting to happen.  He slowly started to relax, giving the teacher a almost impressed look. The stinging was starting to stop, very slowly. That meant it was working.

“Yeah, I guess it is,” he says, enjoying the comparison to potions. Most people don’t offer herbology the same respect as they do potions, probably because they don’t understand everything that goes into it. Once the paste is on Ryan’s face, Jeremy takes the bowl to the nearby sink to wash it out.

“How are classes going?” He asks, trying to make small talk while they wait. Three minutes doesn’t seem like a long time in theory, but it’s an eternity when you’re silently staring at a student.

Ryan pered up a bit, smiling at the other with a soft hum. “Well, i mean herbology isn’t my favorite class but it is just as important as any other class including potions. In fact if done right, they go together really well.” He hummed a bit playing with the long ponytail snaking around his shoulders, waiting for the mixture to come off.

Jack raised an eyebrow at his comment about craving it, but her curiosity was killed when he asked her to dance. She was a bit surprised, being asked to dance wasn’t something that happened a lot. She smiled at his offer, and took his hand. 

“I’d love to. Can’t wait to tell Joel how much of a gentleman you are.” She joked lightly as they found their way to the dance floor.

Ryan smiled,  bowing to her before gently placing a hand on her side and talking her hand with his free one. “oh please don’t tease me Patillo. I am not a gentleman” He smiled at her waiting for the music to start before he twirling her around with a soft smile. “However I do know how to dance.”

“Oh shit, yeah, totally forgot about the second hottest thing in the room.” Michael commented, a sly grin on his face as he glanced over at the potion. Okay, sure, he didn’t actually have any meaning in his flirting, other then completely throwing the other guy off his game. It was nice seeing a Slytherin squirm and blush sometimes; especially when they’re older than you.

Ryan coughed a bit, shaking his head and glancing at Michael. Oh he was not going to win this game. He pointed at another ingredient, mentioning the needed amount and he corresponding color. He then shrugged and smiled. “well I mean your fiery personality is making me rather hot.”

“Well, some would call me a fire starter.” Michael responded automatically, measuring the ingredient. He mixed it in, leaning back afterwards. He smiled at Ryan, one of his confident smiles. “And to be honest, your the one heating up the room. I mean have you looked in a mirror lately?”

You would be the one to repair it.” He chuckled softly, resting his hands on his hips as he watched the other work. “Good job, give it a few moments and it should be the right color.” Michael was a interesting kid. He hadn’t expect him to flirt back, even if it was rather playful. He wasn’t bad at it either.

Burnie doesn’t like meetings. He hates parent conferences, and unfortunately, thanks to the Haywoods and their overbearing tendency to track their son’s every movement, he gets to have them every week. They’re just finishing up when he calls Ryan into the office, headache pulsing dully in the back of his mind as he rubs his temples and sends an owl to whatever class Ryan is in. He can’t believe these people were allowed to have a child. He feels so bad for Ryan, wishes there was something he could do to make this easier for him. 

When the door creaks open, he does his best to appear calming. He hates that he has to have these meetings with Ryan, knows how uncomfortable they make the kid. But it can’t be helped, with his parents breathing down the headmaster’s neck.

Ryan wasn’t surprised when he was called out of class. It had been happening ever since Ryan was a first year. Ever since the teachers had noticed Ryan's strange attitudes, ever since Ryan had started to break out of what had been expected of him, taught to him. Things only got worse when Ryan started to get letters from his parents, telling him all the things he started to do wrong, since the “incompetent headmaster” wasn’t doing anything to stop his “mingling with lesser bloods.” So when he arrived he already looks a little tense. What did he do now? What was he going to get screamed at by a howler later for this time? He bowed his head a bit, glancing at the ground. “Hello sir, that time again?”

@sunflowers-and-diamonds Ryan was in no way a sore loser, he frankly didn’t care much for the Yule King thing. Either way, that didn’t mean loosing didn’t feel bad. However that meant that he could just go congratulate the winners. It meant that he didn’t have to deal with his cousins fake approval, the students trying to talk to him that he didn’t know, congratulations from teachers who only cared because of appearances.  So yes, congratulating the winners were more for a , congratulations on taking the burden off of him in some form or another. So why not go to the most approachable one first. He slowly inched to the girl, trying to put on his most friendly face, even if he was starting to get closerphobic. “Nice to meet you Miss Patillo, I am Ryan Haywood, congratulations on winning princess.”

“Oh! So you’re the famous Mr. Haywood. It’s nice to meet you.” Jack gave a warm smile, trying not to laugh at the thought of ‘Mr. Dweebwood’ from Jack and Joel’s previous conversation. That didn’t seem like the thing to say to someone as soon as you meet them. 

“Thank you, it’s a real honor. Even if I was voted up by people I barely know.” Jack said, glancing to the hundreds of students that filled the room. In truth, while she knew many of them in some way, it shouldn’t have been enough to win princess.

“Well, while normally royalty isn’t won by elections, that’s how presidencies work. So no, it’s not surprising, you seem rather popular, and nice i’ll add. So you deserve the spot you have.” He smiled a bit, bowing to her with a soft chuckle. “Famous? I hope not. Fame isn’t always good, and if my cousins heard you speaking like that i’m sure my parents would, for lack of a better term have my head.” Ryan smiled shoving his hand in his pockets. “disgracing the Haywood name and all that.”

Jack laughed lightly at Ryan’s comments. This guy didn’t seem as bad as many people said he was; or, well, what they said about his family. A bit formal, but seemed rather nice.

“I meant that I have heard about you before, from Miss Joel Rubin if I might add.” She smirked a bit, glancing up at the boys eyes, “You better get a better grade in that project, I would hate to see you as a pet.”

He tensed up a bit at that, a blush appearing on his face. Oh, Joel. Right. So that’s what she was planning. “Ah, yes. I didn’t mean to rile her up so much. I was just teasing her. “ He chuckled softly, giving Jack a warm smile. “ either way, i am much more glad that someone else won. I am simply not king materiel. You however seem to fit your role nicely.”

“Joel is quite easy to rile up. She’s Joel, after all.” Jack laughed at the blush that appeared on Ryan’s face; it fit him well to look embarrassed. 

“Oh please, a Haywood as royalty? That seems like something you were born to do.” Jack responded, smiling a bit. “I am also not fit to be a princess, excuse you. I’m a simple Hufflepuff who just wants to take care of her plants.” Jack joked lightly.

Ryan shook his head. “it seems fine until you become condistioned to crave it. I  don’t know who nominated me I just wish they hadnt’.” He glanced down, before changing his expression and giving her a smile. “this however isn’t about me, this is about you. The princess of the hour.” He bowed his head to her, holding out a hand. “Care to dance? The next song is a short one.”

This was easily the worst day of your life.

“Oh look it’s her.”

You were in the dining hall. Even with most of the school gone home for the holidays, you could still hear hushed whispers practically digging into your skin.

“I heard she nominated herself and tried to rig it so she could win.”

You didn’t know. You heard about the Yule Ball but this was the first time you’ve stayed back at school during the winter. So when the nominations were announced you were shocked to say the least.

“Really? What a fucking bitch, no wonder no one likes her.”

This was another prank. It had to be. There’s no way you’d be nominated, it’s impossible, not unless some mean spirited person nominated you as a joke.

“She’s just looking for attention it’s pathetic.”

You sat stiffly in your seat in a small table at the furthest corner of the room. Even from this distance, you could feel the icy glances and stares; even from here you could feel the acid in their words.

“Doesn’t she always talk about how much she hates it here? Can’t she just leave?”

Swallowing, you took a breath and tried to ignore it. This would pass quickly, gossip always does. It’s not like you actually did anything wrong. Besides who cares what they think right? You have friends and a boyfriend who cares about you, you’ll be fine.

“No one would notice either way.”

A chill went down your spine. That’s not true. There are people who care about you. They care they would notice, right? You began to think too hard and your hands began trembling until you couldn’t even hold your fork anymore. This is too much, it’s overwhelming you can’t do this.

Grabbing your bag, you rushed out of the dining hall, hearing the snickers and soft taunts behind you as you practically raced down the hall. You wish you could’ve gone home. Tears pricked your eyes and you wished you had just gone with your parents to that business trip and sat through it; anything is better than this hell. Your chest ached and you could feel the hot streaks come down your cheeks as you pushed open the door to the castle and ran out to the gardens.

The snow was thick and you tripped once trying to run through it, getting snow all over yourself before getting up. It was still snowing and the wind picked up, not caring that it was the evening or that you didn’t have a coat. It probably wanted to make you suffer as much as everyone else does.

You finally reached the garden gates, pushing them open and limping into the nearest greenhouse where you collapsed in tears. You hate it here, you have to leave. You can’t do this anymore; you can’t be alone like this anymore. You want to go home. Tiny sobs wracked your body as you tucked your face into your knees, the still open door of the greenhouse letting the wind from outside chill your feet and legs tauntingly.

Maybe they’re right.

Ryan wasn’t expecting to see anyone out that night, let alone a crying girl fly out of the building. She had colors of the house he was in. That was a bad sign.  Ryan slowly inched down the walk, following the deep imprints of the snow to the green house stopping a few feet away to stare at the open door, the sounds of crying. It was faint, yet still there. Someone had made a house member cry, and while he definitely was going to check on the girl frist, people were going to pay. He inched through the greenhouse door, stopping a few feet awa from Joel. Someone had hurt her? of all people? this was getting a bit more persona. “Who did it?” Ryan purred, his voice unusually soft. Almost like he was speaking to a scared child. “Who made you cry? they will regret it. “

You jerked back at the voice, pressing back against the wall of the greenhouse in a panic. You looked up and saw Ryan looking down at you, but you couldn’t find it in yourself to relax just just yet.

Wiping away the tears in your eyes with a sniffle you looked back up at him. “W-Why are you here?”

He moved to kneel down in front of her, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket. “To comfort you and to make someone regret hurting you, that’s why i’m here.” He glanced up at her, frowning, sighing softly. He may have been at odds with her but she didn’t deserve this.

Congratulations || Closed

@sunflowers-and-diamonds Ryan was in no way a sore loser, he frankly didn’t care much for the Yule King thing. Either way, that didn’t mean loosing didn’t feel bad. However that meant that he could just go congratulate the winners. It meant that he didn’t have to deal with his cousins fake approval, the students trying to talk to him that he didn’t know, congratulations from teachers who only cared because of appearances.  So yes, congratulating the winners were more for a , congratulations on taking the burden off of him in some form or another. So why not go to the most approachable one first. He slowly inched to the girl, trying to put on his most friendly face, even if he was starting to get closerphobic. “Nice to meet you Miss Patillo, I am Ryan Haywood, congratulations on winning princess.”

“Oh! So you’re the famous Mr. Haywood. It’s nice to meet you.” Jack gave a warm smile, trying not to laugh at the thought of ‘Mr. Dweebwood’ from Jack and Joel’s previous conversation. That didn’t seem like the thing to say to someone as soon as you meet them. 

“Thank you, it’s a real honor. Even if I was voted up by people I barely know.” Jack said, glancing to the hundreds of students that filled the room. In truth, while she knew many of them in some way, it shouldn’t have been enough to win princess.

“Well, while normally royalty isn’t won by elections, that’s how presidencies work. So no, it’s not surprising, you seem rather popular, and nice i’ll add. So you deserve the spot you have.” He smiled a bit, bowing to her with a soft chuckle. “Famous? I hope not. Fame isn’t always good, and if my cousins heard you speaking like that i’m sure my parents would, for lack of a better term have my head.” Ryan smiled shoving his hand in his pockets. “disgracing the Haywood name and all that.”

Jack laughed lightly at Ryan’s comments. This guy didn’t seem as bad as many people said he was; or, well, what they said about his family. A bit formal, but seemed rather nice.

“I meant that I have heard about you before, from Miss Joel Rubin if I might add.” She smirked a bit, glancing up at the boys eyes, “You better get a better grade in that project, I would hate to see you as a pet.”

He tensed up a bit at that, a blush appearing on his face. Oh, Joel. Right. So that’s what she was planning. “Ah, yes. I didn’t mean to rile her up so much. I was just teasing her. “ He chuckled softly, giving Jack a warm smile. “ either way, i am much more glad that someone else won. I am simply not king materiel. You however seem to fit your role nicely.”
