As a grad student and a TA, I’ve probably read more AI writing than most people day-to-day. I've found it pretty easy to spot. It definitely pings as being off in an uncanny valley way.

However, I think the thing students really wouldn’t think about is that when I’m grading your discussion post, I’ve read 100!!! Of these in a row. And I can tell when a bunch of students turn in near identical work!!! More than any “AI tells”, this is the way I can clearly see who is using AI.

What makes this so frustrating is that this doesn’t work as evidence of AI usage so there is very little I can do about it. I think a lot of students think we can’t identify AI writing because they’re more or less getting away with using it most of the time (unfortunately) but we very much do notice. I wish there was a way I could more clearly say “I’m not an idiot, I know this AI. Just because there isn’t enough to report you doesn’t mean I don’t know” instead of just commenting on their vague writing.
