People aren’t reading for pleasure anymore and that’s bad

the people on TikTok/instagram/youtube who say they are reading for pleasure aren’t really reading- they’re skimming and skipping pages - which we know because some of them admit it. And anyways the books they choose to read are awful and aren’t even really books

Actually we should have known that all along because they said they read 62 books last year and that’s LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE without skimming and I will assume EVERYONE who says they read this much is lying

okay maybe it’s possible to read that many books but if you count the books you’re reading then that’s neoliberal capitalism infecting your reading by making it goal based

like I’ve seen this so many times now, it’s the same debate every time and it’s useless. Like as someone who is a reasonably fast reader and who tries to read across genres, all these discussions paint with such a broad brush and are so laden with the idea of reading as a Moral Good.

Some people like to have reading goals and that’s fine. It is normal to want to keep track of how many books you’ve read and even set goals. Ambition does not equal neoliberalism. Some people are fast readers, some are slow and the woman you met at the library who reads a book a day probably isn’t lying about that, even if some people on TikTok skim. I think because reading is not as common of a hobby any more the way we talk about has gotten very strange. We should stop having the same debate over and over again.

Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.

If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.

Trump says he won't sign any bills until SAVE America Act passes

The legislation faces an uphill battle in the Senate.

Deep fucking sigh. The SAVE America Act, or the voting rights overhaul that restricts mail-in voting and voter registration, requires presentation of a passport or birth certificate to register and a state ID at the polls, and now Trump wants to throw in anti-trans stuff just because, is in the Senate, and it's unpopular even with Republicans.

You know what you need to do. US citizens, call your Senators. ESPECIALLY if they're Republican. Republicans are balking and your voice is crucial to get them to stand strong.

Always remember: if voting didn't change anything, they wouldn't be trying so hard to make it illegal.

Kelly Pannek straight up saying the video of the men's team is not surprising is the most real thing of all time. She's been faced with multiple political questions this season and answered well every time.

For those who haven’t seen, she says as follows:

Our experiences with the men's team were different. We all know what it felt like to have their support throughout the tournament, to support them, and how great a moment it was for everyone that was a fan of both teams to come together and say how great it was that we both won a gold medal for the first time ever. It really was such a special feeling being there and being able to spend some time with them after their win and the respect that they were showing US.

The video is what it is, you'd have to ask them their feelings on it. I think there's also elements to it with the phone call specifically that are not surprising, to be frank. I don't know what we expected really. I think for us, it's also about getting back to the focus on our team and what our team accomplished.

Kelly has a way in general of saying a whole lot in very little / between the lines that is pretty valuable for situations like this. There is going to be a lot of pressure for them to forgive the men from USA hockey (who they rely on for money much more significantly than the men do, not just in the actual pay out of playing, but being on a national team holds a lot of weight in your club team pay negotiations) and do damage control for them. While im sure many do feel the mens apologies were genuine and have friends on the team that they’re navigating this with interpersonally, if anyone is still upset, they will absolutely be punished by USA hockey for saying so. Kelly gives an answer that gives us a little bit more than the “oh it was tasteless but they apologized and we’re moving on” (tho I don’t think anyone is wrong if the feel that way, ultimately the gotta focus on themselves and their season) but in an indirect enough way that she shouldn’t face any backlash internally for it
