It's a step towards freedom.
I’ve got everything I need, and nothin’ that I don’t.

This is where I want to be. My goal.
Clean Slate
Sometimes I just want a clean state. I want everything gone and I want to be able to choose only the things I need or really appreciate in my life. Then, I look at all the gifts I've been given and the memories they each have and I don't want a clean slate at all. I want to walk down memory lane, even if I ultimately have to say goodbye to the things I've been holding onto. Seeing them once more is worth the struggle.
New Simplifying Resolution
A new year and a new goal of simplifying. I met my last goal and returned home from Japan with only 60kg of possessions stuffed in two checked bags, a carry on and a back pack.
Now I am faced with boxes of things that were stored at my parents’ and that I inherited early from a dear relative. What’s my goal this year? Obviously to reduce my possessions. How should I measure that goal? Well, since currently my stuff is in an attic and the garage, how about reducing my possessions to only what will fit in my bedroom closet?
Well, here I go!
Simplifying isn’t meant to leave your life empty - it’s meant to leave space in your life for what you really want to do. Know what those things are before you start simplifying.

When Things Find a New Home
Two friends just came by and rummaged through my "to give away" bags and took several bags of items from my hands. I am so grateful to them!
Today's before and after. Yesterday I was trying to go through stuff and made a huge mess. Then I panicked and just couldn't clean any of it. So I slept and tried again this morning. The plastic bags are garbage/recycling and the paper bag has items to give away. I still have lots to go through. The hardest part will be deciding to get rid of stuff I like.
I'm returning to my home country at the beginning of September after living abroad for 3 years. I'm planning to leave with the same number of suitcases I brought - three: 2 check in, 1 carry on. These two suitcases are ones I accumulated on two visits back home. So, that means I had 5 suitcases in my possession. Not good. A friend messaged that she was looking for a cheap suitcase because she had decided she needed a 3rd checked luggage bag (something I hope I won't have to do!!!). So I told her I had an old one I'd give her. So the tan one is gone and I now only have the smaller black one as a back up. Progress!
Chambray. Crop tops. Neons. Gold-dipped everything. As I've been simplifying my life in the past couple of years I've watched these trends drift by without partaking in them. I found myself on the ...
One major drawback of minimalism
You don’t have any extra stuff to make into quick money when faced with an unexpectedly large bill.
Freedom in the Rain
I’m approaching the last month of my current living situation.  I have been gradually passing things off to friends who have recently come to Japan and are in need. Last night I packed my backpack.  Inside I placed: a blender, a hot water bottle, three mufflers, one blanket, three articles of clothing, 6 cup holders for paper cups, an American flag scarf, and 4 decks of playing cards.  I then walked to the apartment complex of two young teachers I have recently become acquainted with.  In Japan, teachers are sometimes lucky enough to get the apartment of their predecessors and thus they “inherit” many essentials.  However, these two had the pleasure of being the first, in their apartments, and have only bare essentials.  I’m sure, they will quickly accumulate things as I have.  I do not wish to add clutter to their lives, only things that are useful or necessary.  I believe what I selected for them was very useful and my gifts were met with much excitement.  It’s hard to think about the winter in the midst of hot July, but the winter items were accepted gladly, and I know they will be a necessity for them, as the winters in Kanazawa are quite cold. As I walked back home, my backpack empty, the rain came.  Softly, at first, and slowly.  Then, gradually, in a downpour.  It felt as if so much was being washed away.  I felt freer.  I’m one step closer to being released from the prison I have created for myself.
It seems paradoxical that, while in the Victorian era it was material deprivation that had to be tackled before spiritual needs could be addressed, now it is material plenty which often stands in the way of addressing spiritual poverty.

Proverbs 31 Ministries This morning I stood in my closet and considered all the multiples — multiple shoes, multiple scarves and multiple purses. Too much stuff! How have I gotten to this place again with a collection of more than I need? The most honest answer is that I use my things to define myself. I think my "perfect" purse makes me seem more perfect. I believe my cool shoes transfer their vibe to my persona. I hope my trendy scarf affirms my relevance. It’s time to clean out! Not only do I not need so much, but years ago I learned a memorable lesson about the soul-cleansing power of simplifying. God created us for connecting, not collecting. As I clean out my closet, I vow to hold my "stuff" loosely and be defined by the closeness of my relationships. Lord, forgive me for my defining relationship with stuff. I want to be defined by You and my love for others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. - Amy Dohm Carroll
My name is Chanel and I collect a lot of stuff.

Garbage Day
I took one bag of clothes to the trash drop off today. Really hard to do that but these were clothes that were worn and I don't especially like. If I don't like them why would I let someone else wear them? I do have another bag of clothes to give away. So don't think I'm entirely wasteful! :)
