Hannibal Chapters 101 - 103
Here we are - the end of a beautiful and disastrous road. What did you think of how things ended? Love it? Hate it? Meh? Does it feel fated or were there some other ways this could have turned out?
“Perhaps he felt a vague concern that he had built better than he knew.”
What could this mean and why do you think Dr. Lecter would need to be concerned about it? Is it possible Clarice could out-think him?
What do you think about Clarice suddenly making the connection about breastfeeding and Dr. Lecter? How do you think that relates to him in the bigger picture?
Do you think Dr. Lecter noticed Barney when they were at the opera?
When Ardelia received the emerald ring Clarice had sent and decided to keep it, do you think that was her own gesture to herself of understanding? Or just of acceptance? Or maybe even grief and disbelief? What do you think was going through her head?
This line from the very end of the books reminds us of the dream like atmosphere of the last few chapters:
“Someday perhaps a cup will come together. Or somewhere Starling may hear a crossbow string and come to some unwilled awakening, if indeed she even sleeps.”
Do you think this indicates some ambiguity concerning Clarice’s state of mind? True, Harris writes that the drugs and their influence have not been a part of their relationship for a long time, but it still seems to be a contentious subject among readers.
What do you think of Hannibal and Clarice’s relationship?
Ah, we have managed to arrive in one piece (although that cannot be said of everyone on this journey ;D), but before we flee, let’s take a moment to appreciate all that we have learned from Hannibal: an introductory course on the Italian Renaissance; the FBI is a cold, hard... hmmmm; the amount of rapid character development that can occur drugged in ‘captivity’; revenge is bloody and sweet (well, savory for our characters); and happy endings do exist in the land of cannibals! But as Thomas Harris so eloquently put, “We can only learn so much and live.”

Hannibal chapters 99 & 100 prompt
Sadly we're approaching the end of Hannibal. So let's ask ourselves some questions before the good doctor leaves us... for now.
Does the scene that opens chapter 99 has an air of inevitability? As in, do you feel the characters were meant to end up the way they did?
Do you think the scene has a kind of surreal atmosphere? As if it were a dream?
Clarice's reaction when she sees the surprise guest. Is it all because of what Hannibal has injected into her or are we seeing the real Clarice? Or maybe a Clarice without the weight of her status in the FBI on her shoulders?
When Dr. Lecter says to the surprise guest: "All we ask is that you keep an open mind." Is that his best cannibal joke? If not, please share with us what you consider his best joke to be of the three books we've read so far.
And finally, do you see some Lecter in Starling and some Starling in Lecter? Who has changed the other more? Or are they equal in terms of influencing each other?
Only two chapters and we'll say goodbye to this book.

Hannibal Chapters 95 - 98
Things are cooling down a bit after the action at Muskrat Farm, but tensions are still high, particularly for Barney.
Do you think he could ever sleep in peace knowing Ardelia is out for blood regarding Clarice’s disappearance?
Do you think this will change Ardelia in the long run?
What do you think about how Margot’s storyline was wrapped up?
With Dr. Lecter’s help, Clarice is confronting long hidden demons and resentments. Of course the good doctor has his agenda in mind, but do you think this does actually help Clarice?
What do you think Dr. Lecter represents to Clarice if not of her father or institutions or failure and frustration?

Hannibal chapters 88-94 prompt
We're at the moment in what is probably one of the most discussed parts of Hannibal. We invite you to share your opinion regarding these chapters with us. And, as always, here are some questions for you to consider.
Do you think Margot would have done what she does to Cordell and Mason if not for Dr. Lecter's influence? Are you satisfied with the way things ended for her? Dolarhyde's death, Buffallo Bill's death and Mason's death. Which one is more horrid? Do you think at this point of the story, Dr. Lecter sees Clarice as a little sister? Or as a protégée? Dr. Lecter and Clarice finally together in a room without cages or bars. What do think about what's happening? How do you interpret this line "Clarice was herself and not herself"?

More questions. Life is full of them. Will we get answers to some?
What do think of Starling's decision of how to approach the Muskrat Farm situation? Do you think she's doing the right thing? If yes, the right thing by her, by the FBI...?
Could you picture the Starling we met in The Silence of the Lambs doing what she's doing at this point in Hannibal?
Do you think Dr. Lecter's rejects Cordell's offer because he's hopeful he'd get out of that or because he simply wants to "have fun"? Or is there any other reason?
If Dr Lecter was here, if she could get him, maybe she could put him cuffed hand and foot in the trunk and get as far as the county jail. She had four sets of cuffs and enough line to hog-tie him and keep him from kicking. Better not to think about how strong he was.
Starling is a professional. Why do you think she doesn't want to consider one of the most important things to take into account in these situations?
The scene with the pigs, Dr. Lecter and Starling's interaction... did you like it? Why?

No, but really, how could he with all his intelligence and brilliance make the purchase for that bottle of wine for Clarice's birthday? Could this be a way of leading her to him intentionally?

Why do you think he does it? Do his actions stem from malice? Or from a (misguided?) will to help?
At the end of chapter 69 we find learn that Clarice would never see Quantico again. The first time you read that line, what were your thoughts? Did you think she would be murdered or badly injured? Or did you think she would quit and leave the FBI behind?
And what are your thoughts regarding chapter 72?

Barney wonders which Verger Dr. Lecter found more interesting in therapy. Which one would you say?
A pig is not like other animals. There is a spark of intelligence and a terrible practicality in pigs. These were not at all hostile. They just liked to eat men. They were light of foot like a Miura bull and could cut like a sheep-dog, and their movements around their keepers had the sinister quality of premeditation.
Could Mason Verger choose a better animal to be Dr. Lecter's "executioner"?

Hannibal Chapters 55-60
Hello! It’s been quite a busy week for our main characters. Dr. Lecter is perusing weapons at a gun and knife show, sticking out like a sore thumb to boot, considering this type of event’s demographic. A certain fellow arouses his attention. Do you think he had a potential kill in mind when he first arrived at the show?
Did you enjoy reading the interactions between Barney and Margot?
We catch a glimpse into Dr. Lecter’s personal life prior to his incarceration and meet a ‘known acquaintance’. Might she have known about his proclivities since she remembers him so fondly?
Do you think the Donnie Barber deer display was intended to be seen by Clarice at all. It did evoke quite an interesting initial reaction from her.
It was nice to see someone show Clarice high regard considering who she's had to put up with so far. Why do you think it was important to include this brief chapter?
When Mason Verger and Cordell are discussing what to do concerning the Franklin situation, why do you think Margot chooses to remain hidden?
