My uncle was one of the top surgeons in the country. He was upper middle class definitely. When he got cancer, his insurance didn’t cover all the treatments he would need and after 5 years he drained his savings on cancer treatments (while still working most of that time) and eventually died because he couldn’t afford the expensive treatments that might have saved him.

If you are upper middle class and you get sick, it will likely bankrupt your family. It’s fucked.

Judging by how punitive most online leftists are inclined to be toward criminals and wrong-doers they actually care about, I have very little hope in any kind of restorative justice project at this moment.

Forgiveness isn’t forgiveness if you don’t think the person did anything wrong in the first place. Your mercy and humanity are judged by how you would treat someone who actually did something wrong. Everyone is in favor of leniency toward people they think didn’t do anything wrong, or committed only a very minor offense. The question is whether you’re in favor of leniency toward actual wrong-doers. And good lord, a lot of you people are psychotically punitive Calvinist weirdos.

No one who’s doxxing 16 year olds for saying the n-word on tiktok, and gleefully licking their lips at the thought that this is totally going to ruin their future job and college prospects, is actually in favor of prison abolition. These people would bring back public executions in a heartbeat if they actually had any power.
