soren knows roman is his father. he does not know sidney is his aunt, as the information that roman was maureen's son was never publicized.
after his mother told him the truth about his parentage, in something of a panic, soren got himself tested for the 'serial killer genes'. he tested negative for atypical MAOA expression, but positive for CDH13. he's since done extensive research and that fact doesn't freak him out nearly as much as it used to.
if there's a book about the ghostface killings? i guarantee you he's read it. it's a fixation, and to the outsider his borderline obsession with these murders probably seems strange and potentially creepy. he genuinely just wants to understand, though, but since he's missing so many big pieces he'd have had to been there to understand, there's little hope.
when he goes to college he focuses on criminal psychology and i'm pretty sure his masters area of study even narrows down specifically to maternal relationships and abandonment in relation to serial murderers. he's totally not projecting his own mom issues there nope

don’t mind me i’m just thinking about the parallels of soren and roman both being intensely traumatized by the revelations of who their fathers are, but how they respond so differently.
finding out about milton snapped roman’s psyche, gave him that final little nudge into becoming a complete and utter monster.
finding out about roman made soren devote himself to understanding his own mind, and the minds of people like his father to try to help stop the never-ending cycle of violence.

SHE KNOWS. the thought is immediate , nearly panic inducing , dropping straight into soren’s stomach like molten lead. one would think that given he’d had this reflexive response to anyone who’d even looked at him since he’d arrived in california that it would’ve dulled by now , and one would be wrong. so intense is the certainty that this stranger can see right through him that it takes him a moment to see what she’s holding out , a copy of HOLLYWOOD HORROR BY GALE WEATHERS , the pages well worn , nearly loved .

TIMELINE
soren’s mother was a producer roman had known in hollywood for several years. they were never romantically together, but they worked really well together and she could take him down like eight pegs at a time and he thought it was hot and hooked up from time to time, mainly as stress relief.
she found out she was pregnant only a few days before cotton weary was murdered. her plan was to tell him once shooting for stab 3 wrapped, she knew how obsessive and intense he could be while working on a project, and figure out a plan, but then the events of scream 3 happen.
horrified, she returns to her hometown of richmond, kentucky, before anyone can notice and make the assumption of her baby’s paternity.
terrified of what soren might become and unwilling to put her career on pause, his mother returned to hollywood as soon as she recovers from his birth, leaving him with her grandparents.
soren mainly grew up with his grandparents. his mom would come stay between projects, would come home for holidays and his birthday, usually, and he’d spend the odd week or two with her in LA during summer breaks from school. his mom has a hard time looking him in the eye sometimes, but their relationship is decent, if distant.
his grandmother is a librarian so he spent a lot of time in the library, making him an avid an enthusiastic reader. crime novels, mysteries, horror stories, and classic whodunnits are his favorite. he learns to love to solve mysteries, put the pieces of a puzzle together, figure it all out.
when he announces as a young teenager that he wants to go to school for criminology and go into law enforcement, his grandparents, who don’t know about roman, are supportive. when his mom finds out, it causes a fight. terrified that he’s drawn to understanding crime for the wrong reason, she tells soren about his father, hoping to steer him away.
this backfires spectacularly. in soren’s desperate bid to understand where he comes from and what this means about who he is, he becomes obsessed with the ghostface killings. he’s read gale’s books dozens of times each, has seen every interview and pored through every newspaper he can get his hands on, just trying to understand and make sense of the intense violence he stems from.
when he graduates high school, he goes to college, initially starting for a degree in criminology, before deciding to pursue a degree in criminal psychology, still trying to understand and make peace with being roman’s son.
