There's a scene in Detective Conan that many of the fans know well, especially those who like the character Gin.
"I forget the names and faces of those I've killed."
It's certainly a chilling line, and it represents well who Gin is in the narrative (at least, to yours truly.) Because Gin, to me, is the Black Organization incarnate. He's a ruthless, silent assassin that doesn't really seem to have any life outside of the Organization. He barely cares about his fellow members outside of the jobs they do and seems to outright despise Vermouth, since from what we've seen, she is the one most likely to toy with her prey and possibly lose it in the process (and also possibly because she's the main boss's pet, who knows).
Either way, this means that Gin is the very Organization he's a part of, the villain for the main characters to defeat. So it's telling that he forgets the standout features of those he's assassinated. Because they're not important to him anymore. Which brings us to my main point.
Kudo Shinichi, our main protagonist, is obviously connected to the Black Organization in a meaningful way. He wouldn't really be the main character if he wasn't, would he? But the thing is, the Black Organization as a whole is indifferent to Shinichi. Sure, there are a few members who know or care about him, but as a whole, the Black Org does not care. They do not care that there are multiple governmental agencies after them. They do not care that there are who knows how many moles and NOCs in their ranks. So why would they even notice someone turned by their poison?
To them, Kudo Shinichi is nothing more than a name crossed off on a list. They do not know the teen detective, the loveable asshole, the soccer player (I ran out of ways to describe him). All they know is that Kudo Shinichi was just a brat that tried to play detective, and he failed. Nothing more, nothing less. But, the thing is, I feel this complete and total apathy isn't just limited to the BO, but the entire world.
Think about it. Shinichi has next to no true original qualities. And as more and more additional characters are added to Detective Conan's narrative, he gets less and less original. Let's go from most to least broad.
He's a teenager. More than a third of the cast are teenagers.
He's a high school detective. There are three other high school detectives (Hattori, Sera, Hakuba, + Haibara if we really want to be pedantic), and three child detectives.
He was turned into a child. Two other people (plus a rat) have been canonically re-youthed.
He likes Sherlock Holmes. Not only does Subaru (Akai) also like Holmes, there was a whole case where all of the suspects were Holmes fans. We can't even give him "High school detective who likes Sherlock Holmes" because that guy existed before Shinichi did and his name is Hakuba.
He likes sour food. I'm not even sure this one is canon since the only "evidence" he likes sour foods is that he commented a lemon tart tasted wrong, but I'll give it to him to be nice.
He plays soccer. There is canonically a soccer club and he teaches three children and Haibara how to play soccer well. I suppose he's the only one who uses it offensively, but there was that one guy who used soccer to kill someone so :/.
So there you go. Shinichi's only two original traits. He uses soccer offensively instead of using some form of karate or weapon (not including the soccer belt/shoes since he did play soccer beforehand) and he maybe possibly likes sour foods. The unoriginality doesn't just stop at his personality traits either. His literal face is a - I hate to say copy, but that is technically the truth - of Kaito. (Who in and of himself is a copy of Kaitou Lupin who -- you know how this goes.) Simply put, Shinichi Kudo is one of many who are quite similar, if not exactly like him.
But.. all of this made me think. What if Shinichi knows that he's not original? Not in a meta way, of course (I don't suspect that Detective Conan is that kind of series in any way) but maybe that's why he became a detective. In a family of an actress and a mystery writer, maybe he wanted to be a detective to stand out more. Adopting his confident and arrogant persona to be even more distanced from his parents. And stand out he did.. until Hattori showed up, reminding him that he really wasn't as original as he felt. So he became stoic, to distance himself from Hattori.
Now, does this mean he's a bad character? No, of course not. He's one of my favorites (Kaito is #1 of course.) and if he's your favorite character, that's cool too! I'm just pointing out something I noticed :). Please feel free to point out how I'm wrong in the reblogs or replies.
The more reason why i love Shinichiiii, gosh there is so many issues this one (1) boy has and his BAD coping mechanism is the thing that make him who he is! *cough* imposter syndrome *cough* super low self-esteem *cough* because OG shin (even conan i think) doesn't think he has any qualities other than being a good detective (and that has been demolished with Hakuba and Akai and Furuya and Rumi's existence.)
Conan is special, but that's only because he's a 6 years-old, a bit older and he loses his novelty (*cough* that's why DCMK progress this slow *cough*, poor baby)
This is why he "hates" kogoro (he doesn't want to become kogoro, a washed out, old, failed detective.) That's why he's so easily jealous of anyone getting closer to Ran (he knows Ran is too good for him, Sonoko reminds him of that everyday.)
Maybe he even internalize it, you know. He's not special, that's why his parents never bother to stay with him because they have a way better and interesting life without him. His parents showing up just to mock him (i know it's a joke or "harmless" prank from their perspective, but as a kid who has been mocked by their own parents, those things stays.) won't help at all.
(I wonder if they ever praise him? Not a 'you know you could do better than that' like bitch!! he's half your age! or 'he gets it from ME!' because he's nothing if he's not a kudo???)
This would relate to a lot of children (facing society's high expectation), It's too bad that Gosho won't- *gets shot*
And yeah, you're super right. There's no way that all these combined factors, plus the world's seemingly complete and total apathy to Kudo, made him the way he is. It also definitely could be a comment on how the world shapes children and how the child cannot be blamed for the bad lessons they're taught by the adults around them, albeit one that's unintentional.
The needling from his parents especially. They mostly fall into one of two categories - Yukiko with the "Oh yes, he got it from Yusaku/me, ohohohohohho!!" Like, no. I'm pretty sure he got his amazing detective prowess from the mystery books he was essentially forced to read when you left him at thirteen probably. Then Yusaku with either not fucking interacting with his SON or saying "haha you could do better than that yeah?" Maybe try teaching him how to do it """"better"""" then, jackass? Like hot damn, who needs enemies with family like THIS??? At least now he has a somewhat better role model in Kogoro, who for all his faults is at least around and shows he cares about his daughter and surrogate son.
Like no wonder he latched onto Ran, who was the first person to make him really feel liked. No wonder he latched onto Hattori, who (although they really are friends) actually let him feel better than someone at something for once in a family of overachievers. No wonder he latched onto Kaito who actually acknowledged his ability and actively improves himself in a bid to outfox Shinichi. No wonder, huh?
Anyway I basically agree with most of your points, thank you for adding into my post so eloquently :))))
My take on OG Shin is that basically, the guy copes with his neglect (in denial), thirst for affirmation (in denial) and loneliness (in denial) by being a show off to the media, using their favor and attention to replace his parents.
My headcanon about him is that when Yukiko and Yusaku left Shinichi alone at a young age, Shinichi couldn't really cope with being essentially 'the adult' in his life. Having awful habbits (doesn't know when to stop or take a break, forgoes asking for help from people, getting injured and just thinking its fine, and being bad at taking care of himself), I could go on more about that but essentially, he grew up neglecting his needs and himself by thinking they were too childish as he was someone trusted to take care of himself by *cough* what people said *cough* great parents. He also probably thought that he should be mature, being the only one who could decide what he wants at such a young age, and Megure and the police essentially couldn't let a child who would be too 'childish' and 'immature' (crying, being scared of a corpse, or needing comfort after being threatened, gosh I think Shinichi as a child experienced all the things he experienced as Conan and that's why he acts so flippant about being kidnapped, stabbed and shot and more) so Shinichi resolved to be 'mature'.
Essentially stuffing his emotions so deep and ignoring them that the guy forgot how to deal with them and cope the proper way anymore, that's why he came off arrogant, apathetic and insensitive.
So here's my take, headcanon honestly cause I haven't followed up on Detective Conan Manga for years already except movies.
Shinichi as a young child, when he first solved a case (maybe stumbled into it in boredom, brought by Yusaku then promptly neglected to go off investigating, letting a child run around a crime scene or a child staring at a corpse which is honestly just awful, or encountered a corpse a few months or years after he was left alone by his parents) got attention from the media. Of course, first, the police probably didn't like it and maybe tried to protect Shinichi but maybe Shinichi slowly realised he was getting praised and was being given attention and notice. So he kept going and going and going, until the police starts to see and realise that a kid was solving cases as a young child and Megure starts recognising Shinichi as a detective. Shinichi then as a young child was pushed into stardom, by the media, the people and by his neglectful parents, who maybe probably (doubtful, they probably did it for a few days or even just a day only or even probably none) visited and just dropped to the media or their elites of Japan that 'yeah that's our son solving those cases, he gets it from us'. Shinichi was already happy with the attention, slowly starting to get arrogant from it, but then he realises his parents notice him too so he goes for more cases. Until slowly, that pure innocent boy who just wants to be loved and given attention turns into a vain and arrogant detective who was an avid media darling and secretly puts up a mask in front of people, masking his true feelings, insecurities and wishes underneath it all. He didn't have that much of a righteous morality but he had sympathy and care that he hid under all his showboating as I agree that he made his deductions public to secretly help the people he sent to prison. He probably did more that actually showed his sympathy behind layers of his acting, but alas, not much else I currently know of or have seen in the manga so I'm just slightly fandom viewing Shinichi. Then APTX4869 came and Shinichi was forced to be unmoored and vulnerable, essentially breaking all his barriers and forcing who he really was up to the surface of his skin but of course, Gosho rules on how to portray Shinichi (can't cry, be mature, cool and all the dumb little things, like let the bro cry, bro deserves it. LIKE HE LITERALLY NEARLY DIED ON EPISODE ONE AND HE DIDN'T CRY????) so we can't even see really deep into who Shinichi really is other than deep defining moments that actually showed it. (Moonlight Sonata Murder Case)
Gosho, don't be a bitch and a coward. Show character development and let main characters cry. HECK, LET KAITO HAVE HIS VALID CRASH OUT. BRO IS TOO SUNNY THAT I FEAR THAT SUN SMILE IS A FAKE TOO AND HE'S JUST FEELING RAGE INSIDE. HE WANTED REVENGE BROOOOO. HE BLEW UP A POWERPLANT. BRO IS LOWKEY BATSHIT INSANE.
i'm sorry, i understand that the point is to ramble and share what you think, but i think this is one of the worst characterizations of Shinichi i've ever seen. and precisely because i love this character, i'll also leave my own vision of him. (of course, i'm not trying to force anyone to change their point of view, i'm just adding mine)
honestly, i don't get it. why this urge to victimize him in every aspect of his life?
Shinichi loves attention, but he didn't become a detective because he needed to stand out from his parents. Shinichi LOVES mysteries. he loves solving puzzles and tricks. he LOVES Sherlock Holmes, his idol since childhood, whom he deeply admires and wants to be like, besides being driven by a strong sense of justice. even if he loves being the center of attention, that is not why he became a detective.
let's also remember that he's so good at soccer he could easily become a professional player. (the level of fame you get from that is way higher than just being a detective, but again, that's not his goal, so even if he enjoys it, he keeps it in the background because it's not his main passion.)
Shinichi does not have low self-esteem, you know? he's genuinely confident and proud (maybe too much for his own good). he's completely convinced of his own deductions and strongly defends his principles. you wouldn't see someone with low self-esteem speaking with that much certainty.
btw, it's pretty normal for young people to live alone, and Agasa is right next door! he's someone the family trusts who has always been by his side. Shinichi isn't completely alone. besides, his parents did want him to go with them. Shinichi chose to stay, and they ultimately decided to respect his decision. i'm not saying they're the best parents in history (this is DetCo, there are no good parents here). but saying they don't care about him and that they don't worry is absurd.
i know the chapter where they first appear is highly questioned, but the goal wasn't to make fun of him. maybe a lot of people didn't like the development, but that's their way of opening Shinichi's eyes. they know who he is and how he works; warning him with words alone wouldn't put him on high alert as much as putting him in a "real" dangerous situation. it served as a wake-up call, and they designed a training ground to make him realize the great danger he's facing. they made him think, move, and act, and at the same time, they tested and saw for themselves how he would react to danger.
and actually, yes, Yuusaku doesn't directly teach him how to do things, but he silently guides him so Shinichi can think for himself and reach a conclusion on his own. which, honestly, isn't a bad thing. it helps him build confidence and be independent.
oh, and yes! they do listen to him. even when he was just a child, they took his warnings seriously when little Ran was in danger.
in Shinichi's first murder case, he's just an average student (Ran literally says so), but he calls himself a "private detective" so his deductions are taken seriously. he clearly knows how to act and how to move around a crime scene. and even though Megure dismisses him as just a kid, Takagi is genuinely impressed.
and at the end of the day, it's absurd not to take him seriously when he's right, isn't it? Shinichi never misses a chance to prove it with his own certainty, pushing his way through so they'll believe him. he can stand on his own.
btw Shinichi has been an arrogant since childhood. it wasn't something that came out of nowhere when his media popularity began. he's just like that ✨
Shinichi ended up where he is precisely because he had too much confidence in himself. becoming Conan is a way to bring him down a peg. to learn to stop being so arrogant. to learn to let others receive praise for their own deductions instead of him. to learn to have allies and people to work alongside (though he still has a long way to go...)
i'm probably forgetting to mention something else, but well, in essence, that's what i think
it's so funny hyperfixating on a specific character because you oscillate between 'i'm going to punt you into the fucking sun' and 'you're my little baby who can do no wrong, i'm going to pamper you' and 'that is a fucking Thing and it is Everyone's Problem'
and yet. despite all of this. when someone asks you about them all you can do is point at their picture and start crying
¿Cuál es tu cliche/tropo de fanfic favorito? ¿Cuál es la temática que más te gusta leer? ¿Y cuál es una temática que no aparece casi en fics pero te gusta? ¿Hay algo que te interese leer?
mutual pining/idiot's in love (?
