This is the original, unaltered letter 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon sent to the editor of The Sun newspaper in 1897. Fearing a nationwide loss of faith in the U.S. government, the editor replaced all instances of “Delaware” with “Santa Claus” before printing the letter along with his now famous reply. From the publishers of The Sun, Virginia O’Hanlon received an undisclosed sum in hush money, and she lived comfortably until her death in 1971. According to her family, her last words were, “Delaware was an inside job.”

Santa Claus is meant to guide you into becoming a well-behaved person in exchange for material goods. The Tooth Fairy is meant to teach you the monetary value of your body. The Easter Bunny is meant to stimulate your sense of whimsy, while helping you develop an appreciation for the sweet things in life. Ultimately, they’re harmless lies with necessary lessons. We believe in them only until we’ve learned what they’re supposed to teach us.

Delaware, however, is a harmful, unnecessary lie because it teaches you to submit unquestioningly to a higher authority (the U.S. federal government), and most people never grow out of it.

Telling a child that Delaware exists is cruelty disguised as love.
