Why did JKR say that Snape "didn't die for ideals" when she made him say "only those whom i could not save" in the books ?? It doesn't really make sense... what's your opinion about it ?
I know that for some fans, everything JKR says is Word of God and must be adhered to. I am rather more loosely on the side of ‘Death of the author’, in the sense that authorial intent is generally of little interest to me; the words on the page within canon are what counts.
I think that JKR wrote the books a very long time ago, and some of the remarks she makes off the cuff in interview (or on Twitter) are not necessarily canon compatible.
I suspect that, at times, she’s modifying what she says with an eye on the audience (we saw this a little with her opinion of Draco, with her fears that some fans were more gracious towards him because of Tom’s appearance).
My other guess would also be that we all live with characters in our minds. My personal headcanons when it comes to Snape move all over the place. I therefore wouldn’t be surprised if the characters in JKR’s mind at present are perhaps a little different to the ones she originally committed to paper. There’s certainly been one or two things released onto Pottermore that I personally feel aren’t coherent with canon.
But then, that’s why we use canon as a term - so we can discuss media without the sands shifting around us.
