Carl noticed him before you did.
It wasn’t because there was anything particularly remarkable about him. He was new, for one thing, which meant Carl had already made a point of remembering his face, his name, and roughly where he’d been assigned to work.
Carl had gotten into the habit of noticing people without meaning to. In their world, knowing who was around you wasn’t paranoia; it was survival. He noticed when someone was carrying a weapon differently than usual, when somebody was distracted during a patrol, when a stranger lingered too long near the gates. So when the new guy started appearing around you, Carl noticed almost immediately.
At first, there was nothing suspicious about it. You were both helping with some repairs near one of the houses, and the guy offered to carry a few pieces of wood for you. Fine. You thanked him. Carl didn’t think much of it.
Then he noticed the same guy offering to help you again the following day. And the day after that. He seemed to have an almost miraculous ability to appear whenever you were working, always finding some reason to carry something, fix something, or show you how to do something you’d already known how to do for months. Carl didn’t say anything. He didn’t even really react. He simply watched.
One afternoon, he saw the guy take a tool from your hand without asking and tell you he’d finish the job for you. You laughed and said you could do it yourself, but the guy insisted.
Carl had been standing several yards away, cleaning his gun, and his fingers stopped moving for half a second. He looked up. The guy was smiling at you. Not the normal kind of smile people gave each other when they were being friendly. It lingered. His eyes stayed on you a little too long.
Carl’s jaw tightened. He lowered his gaze back to the gun and continued cleaning it. Nothing was happening. Nothing worth making a problem over. You hadn’t done anything wrong. The guy hadn’t technically done anything wrong either. At least not yet. Carl told himself that was all it was. He was simply paying attention.
Except then the flirting started.
It was subtle at first, the kind of thing someone could easily dismiss as joking. The guy complimented your hair one morning. He made some comment about how you always seemed to make hard work look easy. You laughed politely, because you were polite, and Carl immediately found himself wondering whether he should have been standing closer to you.
He hated that thought as soon as it crossed his mind. You weren’t something he needed to guard. You weren’t a possession. You could talk to whoever you wanted. Carl knew that. He trusted you. More than almost anyone. That was the part that made the jealousy so frustrating. He couldn’t even blame you for it.
The problem was the guy. The problem was the way he kept hovering. The problem was that Carl had started noticing every single time it happened. He’d be walking through Alexandria and see the guy talking to you, and his entire attention would shift before he could stop it. He’d watch the way you stood, the way you responded, the way you occasionally laughed. He knew you well enough to know when you were genuinely interested in a conversation and when you were simply being friendly. Most of the time, you were simply being friendly. That should have made him feel better. Somehow, it didn’t.
Carl became quieter.
Not dramatically. Nobody else would have noticed at first.
You did. You always did.
The first time you asked him what was wrong, you were sitting together outside after dinner, your shoulder pressed lightly against his. Carl had been staring toward the wall for several minutes, watching the guards change shifts.
“Nothing,” he said.
You turned your head toward him. “You’re quiet.”
“I’m always quiet.”
“Not like this.”
Carl glanced at you. “Like what?”
You shrugged. “Like you’re thinking too much.”
He looked away again. “I’m fine.”
You studied his profile. He wasn’t. You knew him well enough to recognize the difference between Carl being quiet because he was comfortable and Carl being quiet because something was bothering him. His shoulders were slightly tense, and his fingers kept tapping against his knee in an absent rhythm.
You didn’t push him then. You simply leaned against him and stayed there. Carl relaxed a little, and his hand eventually found yours, his fingers closing around it without either of you mentioning it. For a few minutes, the tension seemed to disappear.
Then someone called your name from across the street. You looked up. It was the new guy. He waved and smiled, so you waved back automatically. Carl’s hand tightened around yours. Barely. Almost imperceptibly. But you felt it. You looked down at your joined hands, then at him. Carl was staring straight ahead.
“Is that him?”
Carl didn’t answer.
“Carl.”
“Yeah.”
There was something in the way he said it that made you pause.
You looked toward the guy, then back at Carl.
“What’s wrong with him?”
“Nothing.”
“Carl...”
He sighed.
“I don’t like him.”
You blinked.
“…Why?”
Carl’s jaw tightened.
“Because he’s always around you.”
You couldn’t help the tiny smile that appeared.
Carl immediately noticed.
“Don’t.”
“I’m not laughing.”
“You are.”
“A little.”
He pulled his hand away.
You immediately caught it again.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked at you.
You squeezed his fingers.
“I just didn’t realize you were jealous.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m not.”
“You just said you don’t like him because he’s always around me.”
“That doesn’t mean I’m jealous.”
“It kind of does.”
Carl looked away.
You waited.
Eventually, he muttered, “He’s flirting with you.”
The teasing expression disappeared from your face.
“Yeah.”
Carl looked back at you.
You nodded slowly.
“I noticed.”
His brow furrowed.
“You did?”
“Yeah.”
“Then why do you keep talking to him?”
You stared at him.
There it was.
The question he’d clearly been trying not to ask.
Not angry. Not accusing. Just hurt.
You moved closer.
“Because I can’t control whether someone talks to me.”
Carl looked down.
“I know.”
“And I don’t flirt back.”
“I know.”
“I love you.”
He went still. “I know.”
You smiled faintly.
“Then what’s wrong?”
For a moment, he said nothing. His eye dropped to your hands. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter.
“I don’t like thinking about somebody else wanting you.”
You didn’t answer immediately.
Carl swallowed.
“And I know it’s stupid.”
“It’s not.”
“It is.”
“No.”
He looked at you.
“You don’t have to compete with anybody.”
“I’m not trying to.”
“You are.”
His expression tightened.
“I just…” He stopped, frustrated with himself. “I don’t know.”
You waited.
He looked away again.
“I don’t like feeling like I could lose you.”
That was the truth.
Carl had spent too many years watching people disappear. He’d learned that loving someone didn’t mean you got to keep them. Sometimes people died. Sometimes they left. Sometimes circumstances tore families apart before anyone had a chance to stop it. He had learned not to expect permanence, even when something felt permanent. And now he had you, and somewhere in the back of his mind there was always the quiet knowledge that he could lose you too.
You reached up and gently touched his cheek.
“You’re not going to lose me because some guy likes me.”
Carl looked at you.
“I know.”
“You trust me?”
“Yeah.”
“Then trust me.”
He nodded.
“I do.”
You leaned closer.
“And if he keeps flirting with me after I make it clear I’m not interested, I’ll handle it.”
Carl’s expression softened.
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
You smiled.
Then you kissed his cheek.
Carl looked away immediately.
But he was smiling.
The next day, the new guy approached you again.

You started walking together.
After a few steps, you looked down at your hands.

Carl glanced at you.
“Am I?”
“Yeah.”
He thought about it. Then his thumb moved slowly across your knuckles.
“Maybe.”
You smiled.
“Still jealous?”
He considered lying. Didn’t.
“A little.”
You squeezed his hand.
“That’s okay.”
Carl looked at you.
“But you know I choose you, right?”
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he nodded.
“Yeah.”
And this time, when he smiled, there wasn’t any tension behind it. Just relief. He didn’t need to watch the guy anymore. He didn’t need to wonder. He already knew where you were going. You were walking beside him.

The sounds of Alexandria—the occasional voices, the clang of someone repairing part of the wall—had long since disappeared behind the endless stretch of oaks and pines. At first neither of you had thought much of it. Carl had suggested taking a longer route while checking a few hunting traps Aaron had pointed out on an old map, insisting that it would only take another hour before circling back toward the Safe-Zone. It had seemed simple enough then. Walk out. Check the traps. Maybe bring back a rabbit if you were lucky. Be home before dinner.
Now, judging by the way Carl had stopped for what felt like the fourth time in ten minutes, it was becoming increasingly obvious that neither of you knew where that route had gone.
He unfolded the worn paper map again, staring at it with the same focused expression he’d worn since the prison days whenever he was trying to solve a problem without asking anyone else for help. “My mom used to make us hike.”
Your eyes shifted toward him.
Carl rarely brought up the past on his own.

“Every summer.”
“Were you any good at it?”

Carl didn’t answer immediately. Instead he poked gently at one of the fallen leaves with a stick you'd just realized he was holding in his hand, watching it crumble and break into small pieces.
“…Maybe.”
You lowered your head as well, suddenly deciding to follow Carl using your ears. After another minute you heard movement beside you. He'd started walking next to you, the stick digging into the dirt like a walking cane with every step.
There was simply something reassuring about having another person nearby when the world outside the circle of light felt so endlessly dark.
“You know,” you said eventually.
“Hm?”
“If we make it back…”
“When we make it back.” He corrected. There was no way they'd get lost in the woods and that would be the end of their lives. Not after everything they'd been through. That would be just pathetic.
You smiled. “When we make it back… I don’t think I’m ever volunteering for another shortcut.”
He considered that.
“…Give it two weeks.”
“You think?”
“I think you’ll forget.”
“I totally won’t.”
“You will, trust me.” His tone had turned a little playful, a small smile almost audible in his voice.
“You have a lot of confidence for someone who got us lost.”
“I told you," He looked over with that unmistakably stubborn expression. "We were unexpectedly relocated.”
Sometimes his insistence to keep his ego intact made you let out a quiet cackle. Just like this time, except it wasn't as quiet as usual.
Carl rolled his eye, though the corners of his mouth betrayed him completely. “You keep laughing.”
“I will.”
“I’ll remember this.”
“For what?”
“The next time you ask me for directions.”
“Oh, give it two weeks.”
“Don't copy me.”
The laughter faded slowly, replaced once more by peaceful quiet.
Somewhere nearby a bird called into the darkness.
Sleep eventually began tugging at the edges of your thoughts, though neither of you admitted it aloud.
You must've thought about resting and shutting off your brain for a while, because Carl caught you off-guard by stopping in his tracks, his body standing still in place.
His attention remained fixed on the woods beyond the unrecognizable path. Ever alert. Always listening.
“…We should sleep,” you mumbled quietly.
He shook his head.
“I’ll stay up a little longer.” He muttered.
“You’ve been awake all day.”
“I’m okay.”
You almost pointed out that he always said that. Instead you simply nodded. “…Let's find a place where we can rest.”
After around ten minutes of wandering around, you found a place clear enough of trees to sit down and settle for the night. It had been a while since you'd had to take turns for night watch, but you certainly did not get out of the habit.
Sighing, you took off your sweater, laying it down on the ground and folding it like a pillow to put your head on. "Wake me up when it's my turn," You spoke, already beginning to lie down on the grass.
“I will.”
He probably wouldn’t. But saying it was enough.
You settled back again, listening to the rhythmic chorus of insects and distant rustling leaves.
Just before sleep claimed you completely, you heard Carl’s quiet voice.
“…We’ll find our way back tomorrow.”
There wasn’t even the slightest uncertainty in it anymore.
Morning arrived wrapped in pale sunlight filtering through dew-covered leaves. Birdsong replaced the sounds of the night. The forest suddenly felt less intimidating than it had a few hours before.
After packing everything up, Carl climbed onto a large moss-covered rock nearby, shielding his eye from the morning sun as he scanned the landscape.
His head turned once.
Then again.
“…There.”
You followed his gaze.
Far off between the trees sat the faint outline of an old service trail. It was almost invisible unless someone knew exactly what to look for.
A grin spread across his face.
“Told you.”
“You told me what?”
“We’d find it.”
“You also told me we weren’t lost.”
“…Different conversation.”
You chuckled, shaking your head as the two of you started walking toward the trail.
Within another hour, the familiar walls of Alexandria finally came into view. The relief that settled over both of you wasn’t dramatic.
As the gates opened and familiar faces came into view, you caught Carl looking back toward the woods one last time.
“What?”
He shrugged.
“…Kinda liked it.”
“The getting lost part?”
“No.”
“The almost dying part?”
“I'm used to that.”
