Romance headcanons

NAME: Prince Leo of Nohr NICKNAME: I don’t think he has one?? I Headcanon that his name is Leon, but he calls himself Leo to distance himself from his abusive mother. GENDER: He’s a guy. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION: This bitch is bi

PREFERRED PET NAMES: Leo plays it cool so he pretends to hate pet names, but in private he adores the attention and will like most anything. RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single, as I RP him generally. Though, given the manner of the marriage system in Fates, and the existence of Forrest, his relationship status can change based on the thread. FAVORITE CANON SHIP: Leo x dweebishness FAVORITE NON-CANON SHIP: LeoNiles is my favorite ship in Fates. OPINION ON TRUE LOVE: This depends on the timeline. As mentioned above, it’s possible for him to be in a relationship, and to be in love, depending on thread. Generally though, I would say Leo doesn’t believe in true love. His mother was one of many viciously battling and vying for his father’s attention, and that had a huge impact on his life and how he views himself. I also imagine he was told how he’d need to make an heir or the importance of marrying for status or children, rather than the importance of love.

OPINION ON LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: He firmly does not believe in the existence of it, and thinks anyone who does is childish.

That said, I also imagine he secretly loves reading cheesy romance books where such things happen. HOW ‘ROMANTIC’ ARE THEY?: Once Leo falls in love, he’s hopeless. He’s never going to leave his SO alone. He’ll shower them in gifts and affection and attention, he’ll get dokis if they smile at him in the right lighting. IDEAL PHYSICAL TRAITS: I don’t know if he has ideal physical traits. In canon it’s not implied that he really has preferences, though in fairness, canon is a hot mess of a game.

I would say he prefers people, man or female, to be more toned and muscular, and ideally taller than him, but it’s not as if he could never love a person who lacked these features.

IDEAL PERSONALITY TRAITS: Leo respects people who are real in that they don’t try to lie to him, or put on airs, or be duplicitous in attempts to gain his attention. He likes people who don’t treat him differently because he’s a prince. I think that’s why he and Niles work so well.

He hates blind naivete and laziness, the sorts of people who think good things will happen if they wait, or that doing the ‘right thing’ is always going to lead to the best outcome for everyone. He respects people who are willing to do underhanded things if it will ultimately benefit the greater good, and hates people who commit cruelties for their own gains.

In essence, I think, Leo likes leaders, but people who don’t treat him like a leader.

UNATTRACTIVE PHYSICAL TRAITS: Gotta say this now. His siblings? Unattractive. Corrin? Unattractive.

Realtalk, I think that people who are rugged and bearded like your typical FE rough and tumble brigands, are unattractive to mister pampered princey here, but that doesn’t mean he can’t grow to appreciate them.

IDEAL DATE: Something where he can dote on his SO. A dinner date where he can compliment them, maybe teaching them magic or horseback riding, but he can wrap his arms around them and kiss them when they do well. Simple, intimate things.

He’s not big on doing things publicly though, like going to a fair or something amongst the people. He gets enough of that as a prince. DO THEY HAVE A TYPE?: I don’t believe so. Leo generally isn’t looking for love. If it happens, it’s gonna hit him like a freight train when he realizes it. He’s too busy with work and maintaining his image to really consider it.

AVERAGE RELATIONSHIP LENGTH: He wants to stay together forever, because he’s used to ‘have this one night stand because HEIRS ARE IMPORTANT’ PREFERRED NON-SEXUAL INTIMACY: sitting near each other, reading. Cuddling. Hand holding. Leo’s big thing is being in the presence of someone where he can be himself and relax and not worry about his image as a prince. COMMITMENT LEVEL: Leo, in my opnion, doesn’t do things halfway. He’s known as an incredible talent and prodigy, but really, the guy’s a workaholic. The same applies to relationships. Once he finds one, he’s committed. He’s going to give it every fiber of his being. OPINION OF PUBLIC AFFECTION: He’s not into it. That’s what people want, isn’t it? From a prince? To be shown off? Particularly since his mother was the way she was wit his father, he feels that PDA is actually an unpleasant and devious thing.

PAST RELATIONSHIPS?: None. But I like the idea of him once having a small fling with a stablehand that they both knew would never work because he was a prince.

He didn’t need it of course, that would have been quite preposterous, but sentimentality was the only thing Nohr hadn’t taken from his childhood.

Lyon was a soft thing, tall but somehow small in the way he moved and spoke. He had hair like silk and lavender eyes as gentle as placid waters on a quiet morning. His smile was like sunrise, and magical talent in darkness the likes of which Leo had never seen before.

For all the ease with which he exuded grace, however, Lyon exuded the most rotten of miracles when he cooked. Perhaps it was because he treated it more like potion making than he did like cooking, perhaps it was because he’d grown having servants cook for him and rarely spent much time in the kitchen; Leo himself was certainly ill-experienced in the art of cooking beyond what he’d read in books, but he knew that soup was not meant to look so thick and gray as what was simmering in the pot Lyon was humming happily over.

“Of course i wouldn’t dream of rushing your... miracles,” he said carefully, “I’m simply saying that there doesn’t seem to be much else to do for it. It looks quite... done. Yes, done.”

Leo was used to dealing with mercenaries. They were the dry, rugged sorts who could only spring up in the darkest dredges of uncivilized lands; heroes to the poor, eyesores to the rich, as cold as the gold that passed beneath their tables.

They had their uses, of course, in those areas where the law was too gray for the guard to handle, but Leo found, in terms of personal company, that they were utterly beyond anything close to redeemable.

“I am capable of sleeping on the ground,” he sputtered, recoiling from the kebab Ike held so casually, “but you can’t expect a Nohrian Prince to eat fried bugs for his evening meal! I demand something else!”

 It was quiet save for a few murmurs. The tension in the air was thick, hanging over the armies head and Niles wondered how long until someone finally snaps. To force two enemies to suddenly cooperate with each other was risky business, and surely there was going to be some kind of squabble to break out in their camp. Nohr and Hoshido had been enemies for far too long, and for Corrin to expect them to shake hands and make friends was disgustingly naive. Or maybe Niles was being too cynical? After all, there was a chance for Nohr and Hoshido to be on friendly terms now. 

                     The enemy of my enemy is my friend, Niles snorted with a roll of his eye. They didn’t even know if King Garon was the true enemy, thanks to Corrin and Azura being as secretive as they are. While he didn’t have much of an opinion on who’s side they joined, Niles did find himself a little irritated with the two’s tight-lipped reasons as to why King Garon was the enemy. Even more so after observing the pressure it put onto his lords shoulders. 

The former outlaw was unsympathetic to most, whether they regretted joining Corrin and missing their homeland was no concern to him. But his stomach clenched every time he saw the furrow in Leo’s brow ( he was reluctant to admit this, even to himself ).

              He knew the stress that was on his lords shoulders. It was no easy feat to go against your father and eldest sibling, much less becoming a criminal after being royalty for your whole life. Usually, Niles would have gotten a kick out of a nobles suffering, but this was different. His lord was different. 

A familiar head off blond caught his eye, and he lolled his gaze to watch the very man that was on his mind slink into his tent. A purse of his lips and a hum, he tapped at his forearm in thought; They didn’t have anything of importance to do, and without Azura and Corrin in camp, there was no one to particularly tell them no. Getting up from his spot, he moved past his comrades without so much as a glance and stopped in front of Leo’s tent. 

               “My lord,” he hooked a finger around one of the tent flaps, “may I have a moment of your time?” 

By the time Niles sought entrance, Leo had read the same page thrice and absorbed none of it. It was a boring book, he supposed, for a mind too full of other things.

“You can have more than a moment,” he snapped the book shut and rose, pulling back the flap himself. “You know that. None of this formality business. I won’t stand for you being as stiff as the rest of them. Just come in, next time.”

Niles was a man of taupe skin and sharp features. He had a head of messy silver hair and eyes as piercing as the arrows on his back. When he entered he wore a familiar grin, the sort that said he was up to something he shouldn’t have been, and Leo found himself returning the gesture in spite of himself.

“You came with a suggestion.” It wasn’t a question. He put his book aside. “Well, let’s hear it. I’m at my wits end with the current state of things. I could use a conversation about anything else.”

They’d made their camp a safe distance away from the bottomless canyon, a quick, makeshift jungle of tents raised for the sole purpose of quick rest and recovery of wounds. If one looked from the Eastern side towards the horizon, they could make out a sliver of darkness marking the void far off in the distance; from the Northern side, the beaten remains of their last battle was barely visible.

Leo thought it odd, from where he stood, the way everyone milled about the camp, laughing and chattering. Their movements were strangely robotic, their voices a shade off-pitch; it was a testament to the tension that threatened to smother them all in its shroud. Even the most strategically inept of them surely recognized the risk of being tracked staying where they were. There hadn’t been enough wounds sustained to prevent their forces from traveling further, but both Corrin and Azura had insisted on staying near the Bottomless Canyon for reasons they likewise insisted they couldn’t speak.

“… Were it not for father’s condition, I never would have trusted this...” He pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose, breathing a slow and heavy sigh.

Xander had formed an alliance with Ryoma and by extension, Hoshido. Night and day would work together to defeat the force that threatened them both, the nameless ‘true enemy’ that possessed King Garon. It was a simple, grandiose plan, and any fool knew that simple, grandiose plans never worked.

Leo had decided to trust Corrin. The rest he stood on the edge of, precariously looking over, too wary to jump. He was not so naive to believe they might save his father. Killing him was for the good of Nohr, of the world, but could he stand to let anyone from Hoshido, or even Corrin, deliver the final blow?

What of after? Both Xander and Ryoma would have to assume the mantle of leadership in the wake of war-torn nations, but Hoshido would still be day, and Nohr would still be night. The citizenry in the shadows would be hit harder. They would be vulnerable. Would the alliance between their nations hold out when necessity was no longer binding?

They all trusted Corrin’s knowledge, yet remained ignorant of it. Enemies made camp together in a vulnerable location with only the barest knowledge of why. They stood arm in arm against an enemy they couldn’t confidently plan against.

Leo lowered his hand and slid into his tent, plucking a book from his satchel to sit and read. He’d read it before; it couldn’t answer the question that burned in the forefront of his mind.

Had he branded himself the enemy of his own nation in a losing battle?

The storm had come in roiling, writhing, weeping large tears that splattered against the windows and battered the walls. It was a sudden flash of blinding lightning followed by a dull rumble, and it rose in time to the swishing, wailing whip of the wind; the trees and shrubs groaned defiance to the invisible hand that bent them. 

Walking through the halls, it seemed to Leo that the storm might have been pursuing him, demanding retribution in a language he couldn't understand. The sky glinted ominously in each window he passed; he heard muffled screams through the panes of glass, rising and falling as he quickened his pace. 

He made his way to his quarters His room only had one window; he could sit down with a book and tune out the world that ached to tear him apart, at least for a while longer.

He flopped into bed with a sigh before a gentler sound caught his ears, delicate, whimpering, too soft for the storm, and he shifted to peer over the side.

“...A tail?” Leo pursed his lips in confusion.

“....Keaton?”

“...I’m fine.” It was the third time he’d repeated the same lie, as if saying it enough would make the strange throbbing numbness creeping up his side become as distant as his mind.

It had all happened so quickly. The enemy had moved in a way he hadn’t predicted, and he’d panicked, stepped wrong. The world had spun, as if trying on a thousand different perspectives on for size, each one wrong, each one strange, each one not possible for someone like him.

He’d dropped his sword, became acutely aware of the strange throbbing,hot yet cold feeling of blood dripping down his arm, his torso, and he had known in that moment that he had made a mistake. He had failed.

In the wake of such weight, the rest didn’t matter. Leo swayed on his feet.

“I’ll find someone... to handle this...” he breathed, “this won’t happen again.”

“As do all nobles who will one day be good rulers,” he shrugged, “or at least be good at appealing to the people.”

The princess carried herself with a gentle grace, but her eyes carried a hardness beneath their depths. Perhaps she had seen things she never should have, perhaps she was simply a poisonous flower, Leo was not certain which.

“You are princess Erika, if memory serves,” he continued. “I am Leo, prince of Nohr. If you’ve heard anything about my nation, you’re aware that both war and hunger are unfortunately common.”

“I have seen men lose themselves in the pressure to rule a kingdom,” Leo began, “I have seen once kindhearted men reduced to bitter, angry, shells in their attempts to please everyone, and in the end, they did the opposite...”

He moved as he spoke, closer to Lyon; this was the sort of language that demanded attention, the sort of weight not to be taken lightly. There were shadows just beyond Lyon’s gaze that rose in the dim circumstance of Grado’s future, but shadows could only consume in darkness.

“I don’t know what it takes to be a good ruler,” he said, “but if you end up hated and reviled by the people you save, even if you save them, can you say that you were a good leader?”

“Those who keep food to themselves are not the ones who have ever gone hungry, and those who wage war benefit from them more than those who fight in them. It’s unfortunate circumstance that those in power seek to take more from those who are helpless to stop it...” He trailed off with a sigh, and for a long moment, the weight of his words stilled his tongue.

“...But I agree with your vision,” he continued at length, “and for you Niles, I will do everything in my power to achieve it. Tell me, what brought this on?”

Rehny had a wild sort of energy, a ferocious sort, whimsical and indifferent in equal measure. It wasn’t suited for a prince; Leo thought he’d have been more at home running through the forest or howling at the moon, but his teeth were for more than splattering blood; his smile was more than a weapon.

“Thank you,” a small smile graced his lips; it was as light as the warmth that rose in his chest, “but don’t lose focus, the tree’s only half grown. If you can push it all the way, we can have oranges!”
