Hello, and welcome to the HxH Big Bang!

What is this??

There are several variations, but generally a Big Bang is a challenge where an Author writes a longer fic and an Artist creates art for them. The result will be an influx of new works for the HxH fandom to enjoy, and as an added bonus, encourage collaboration between fan-artists and fic writers! 

Okay, cool. How will this work?

Authors will sign up to write a fic, and once they’ve got an idea of what they want to do, artists will claim the fics they want to work on based on a blind summary. (So make it good!!) From there, the author works to finish their fic, while the artist works on creating an accompanying art piece before the due date!

Alright, alright. What are the rules?

For Authors:

– Stories must be at least 5,000 words in length. There is no maximum length.

– Content will not be restricted. You may write gen, het, slash, or any combination thereof; AU or crossover; any rating, any pairing, any tense, any voice, any focus!! Go wild!! Authors, this is your time to shine!!

– A summary of your fic is due by February 8th. You will need to have enough of a solid idea for your fic, along with a guess at a rating and possible triggers! Please refrain from wildly changing your summary or the idea for your fic mid-way. – You may use a WIP so long as it has never been accessible outside of this challenge. No submitting a chapter of a work you’ve already posted somewhere, now. Stories must be complete, new, and proof-read. – You may write in collaboration if you wish! – You will be matched with an artist based on the summary of your completed story. All summaries will be posted blind sometime after February 8th.

For Artists:

– After summaries are posted, all fic claims will be due by February 15th. These are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Any extra artists or fics will be matched by the mods. – You will be given a completed version of the story you chose by Sunday, April 17th, 2016. – Your minimum requirement per fic is one illustration. One is required, but if your muse moves you, you’re welcome to create more than one!! – You choose which part of the fic you want to illustrate, eg. one or several scenes, chapter headers, an image that captures the spirit of the whole piece - the decision is entirely up to you! – Collaboration on artworks is allowed. – We use “illustration” very generally. Artwork can be mixed media, digital, ink, animation, etc. Have fun!!

Miscellaneous

– Wanna participate but not an Author or Artist? Please consider signing up as a beta-reader!! Beta-readers are a much appreciated and much needed resource for fic writers. As a beta, you will be matched up with an Author based on their need and your preferences.

Need suggestions for a theme, or low on ideas? Here’s a brief list of themes to consider:

Deadlines

Author/Artist sign-ups open: January 4th.  Author/Artist sign-ups close: January 25th.  Summary due: February 8th (Again, you need to have enough of a solid summary of your fic, along with a guess at a rating and possible triggers!) Artist claims due: February 15th. (Claims will be first come first serve! If we get more artists than authors, more than one will be assigned! Cool, right?) Author check-in: March 15th. (PMs will be going around to make sure those who signed up are still interested, and no extensions are needed.) Fic due: April 15th. (Completed fics will be sent to to their respective artists. Please send your fic, or a link to your posted fic, to hxhbb. Absolutely no early posting allowed!!) Artwork due: May 15th. Posting Begins!

Yo quick and probably stupid question: we are allowed to send a link of our stories to our beta readers, right? I mean, it doesn't count as publicly sharing it, I just wanted to make sure.

Yes of course, absolutely!! Sharing your fic with betas (or even bouncing ideas off with other writers), is a-ok so long as your fic isn’t publicly posted anywhere. The only people who aren’t allowed to see fics in advance are artists. Hope this helps!!

#I could really use some writer friends to chat with about my fic it’s so lonely#abd I am insecure about my writing and also dying#but I also don’t want to discuss my worries with my beta I want their perspective on my work be as objective as possible

I was talking to del about getting a chat going for big bang writers so we can vent and get feedback while we work on these because I think we all feel the same way!  The organizers are probably hella busy right now going through the summaries, though, so I can set up a discord server later today for anyone interested if that’s cool with @hxhbb

Whew;

The HxHBB is just about over, and it was an interesting (and challenging!!) experience to plan, organize, and see through to its completion. When I made the original post talking about how I’d like to do something like this, it was done half-jokingly, and I never really expected anything to come of it. It was @shalnarkonice who encouraged me to take the first steps toward starting this blog and turning a post that was pure, half-assed thinking out loud into an actual event, so my deepest and fondest thank-yous go out to youShally!! You helped me as I was writing rules, helped send out messages, helped me keep those countless lists and docs organized and helped to keep me encouraged, and that last part is honestly the most important to me. <3 Thank you Shally, you are so golden and I’m looking forward to having so many more conversations with you!!

I also really gotta thank everyone who offered to help at one point or another (psst, @gonprohunter, thank you especially for being a huge help AND understanding, you’re awesome). You guys didn’t have to step forward, but you did and it made things a little easier. 

Lastly, thank you to all the authors and artists who participated!! I hope this helps to facilitate some new friendships. Artists still have a bit of time to start posting, so we’ll all be looking forward to it. Remember to host art on your own blogs and tag accordingly!! I’ll leave it up to you guys to send in links to art and fics if you’d like for there to be a masterpost later on down the line, but it’s not mandatory. And of course, if you have any questions, the askbox will remain open for a time.

The prospect of making a moral argument against landlordism to begin with is very silly to me. what are we, georgists? Let's be marxists yeah?

Landlordism is an unsustainable aspect of capitalist society because it works in concert with the speculative financial wing of the economy to scoop purchasing power produced by the productive sectors of the economy off the top and lock it away in savings accounts where it can't circulate and create more economic activity to sustain the economic growth that capitalism demands.

As purchasing power pools at the top via the extraction of these rents, the face of the nominal economy becomes ever more referential, as the pricing mechanism increasingly prioritizes sign-value and, more toxically, speculative-value over use-value, causing a disconnect between the value of sectors of the economy in terms of their actual use and their speculative use as realized in ever-more-complex and self-referential financial games-- In short, it makes more and more destructive speculative bubbles more and more common, locking up more and more savings into these stockpiles into its wake until there is an inevitable total crisis of liquidity where the actually essential productive/critical sectors of the economy entirely lose their capacity to function.

The real critique is that simple at base, with no moralism required, hope this helps!

im going to try and paraphrase this in very basic terms.

landlords don’t have to be thought of as evil, to be recognized as a problem. the more houses are owned by landlords, the more working-class people have to rent, and the less money they have to buy their own houses.... which are more and more expensive to buy, because less and less of them are ever put up for sale. landlords extract a profit from their laborer tenants, and use that money to outbid them for the remaining houses.

the way houses are valued goes from ‘a place where you live’ to ‘property you own’ to ‘a source of income’, and real estate becomes a market for speculative investment: the value of a house is now entirely theoretical, based on landlords guessing how much money they might be able to make off the house, in the future.

so the landlords spend all their time, and all the money they take away from their renters, speculating on future profits, and buying and selling houses to each other based only on these guesses as to how much profit they might be able to theoretically make later. and when it turns out they’ve guessed wrong, they lose that money. and sometimes they just lie to each other to make more money. and money becomes very theoretical, too. billions of dollars get tied up like this, in completely abstract blocks of hypothetical value, totally divorced from any real-world context, and the ‘economy’ starts rising and falling in unregulated and unpredictable--but totally inevitable--boom and bust cycles.

and in the meantime, the people on the ground, who get their money by actually making it, have no more power, no more money, and no more homes.

landlords aren’t evil. they’re just part of a very stupid problem.
