This is a #designatmagee project in collaboration with Local Hands & Friends. The 2 day event was funded by The Garfield Weston Trust & The Allingham Project. The students that attended were from #designatmagee and LYIT (Erasmus Germany). The students won their places at DELVE as a result of their entries in Poetry In Motion at #allingham 2014.

Unbelievably #designatmagee has not been cut by Ulster University A serious blow to the creative economy in the northwest. DELVE is just a very small example of a much bigger contribution.

#delve2015 is gonna be hard to sum up. It went way beyond expectations and fuel has been poured on embers that are gonna set the craft/design world alight. Some very interesting collaborations coming out of this. A short vid is being cut at the mo. Something tells me we’ve created a baby monster!

Hi All DELVE participants,

Please find attached the programme for DELVE2015.

DELVE takes place at The Mill Wheel, Abbey, Ballyshannon this Friday 26th & Saturday 27th June. DELVE is designed to bring together traditional crafters, artists and designers with a view to sharing skills and explore potential collaborations in a relaxed creative environment, eliminating the pressure of client delivery.  As participants, you will demonstrate your individual skill sets, explore possibilities across disciplines, forge links with potential creative partners and perhaps even visualise new projects?

You'll see on the programme that two tracks will run concurrently over the 2 days.

Track 1: For Crafters Track 2: For Designers

The crafters will experience design thinking/demonstrations and in turn, the designers will have an opportunity to get 'hands on' with traditional craft demos/workshops. Ideally, it would be fantastic if both groups could attend each full track. The tracks join together at key stages through the programme. There will also be 'Creative Interludes', where you can escape to the 'Scriptorium', experiment with stop animation and even doodle in mid air? (if the postman makes it on time). The workshops are not open to the general public, but there has been interest online, so we may have some 'passers by' looking over our shoulders on occasion. We are planning to film short sections from the workshops with a view to compiling a short 3 minute film to be shown at 'The Allingham Festival' in November 2015. If, for some reason you do not wish to be filmed, please let me know in advance, no offence will be taken.

Hot lunches will be served on both the Friday and Saturday and tea/coffee will also be available. If you have any dietary requirements please email [email protected]. All participants & attendees are invited to a meal at Nirvana restaurant (our treat) at 6.45pm on Friday eve followed by a student design showcase in the Thatch at 8.15pm.

Padraic has been utilising social media as a teaching tool since 2007. One recent successful working model is the DAM Alumni ‘closed’ group on facebook. Multiple design jobs have been secured through the group. 

In 2014, he led a social media and website restructuring project for the Allingham Festival which resulted in a reach of 50,000+ views. This workshop aims to demystify social media structuring and furnish you with tips to improve your reach and manage your content.

Mark Cullen - Animator & doodler. We are delighted to welcome Mark to the fold. Mark has been a big supporter of the Allingham Festival in recent years through #designatmagee and is keen to explore new ground with traditional crafters at DELVE.

He will be facilitating a workshop on digital sculpting with a view to a 3d printed output. The course will be an introductory course into the creation of 3d objects using ZBrush (the industry preferred 3d sculpting program).

The workshop will consist of:

An introduction to key concepts of 3d content creation for 3d printing. Key sculpting techniques in ZBrush. Output to 3d printing platform. The workshop aims to allow the participants sculpt simple 3d printable objects with a view to getting them printed at a later date.

Brendan Mc Gloin, Stone Sculptor

Brendan began to form his career with stone shortly after finishing a four-year diploma in Graphic Design at LYIT in 1992. His first appreciation of architectural masonry was seen while working on the Bristol Swallow Hotel (Neo-Classic Style building using Bath Sandstone). Returning to Ireland in 1993 he stumbled upon a local Mason and began an apprenticeship in the art of drywall building and Stone building. 1996 saw his departure to Australia via Asia on a two-year working visa. Much of his time was spent working with the Temperi family of masons based in Sydney. The work entailed restoration on public and private buildings within the Sydney basin (Sydney Museum, Lands & Titles Building, St Mary's Cathedral). On a six-month break to New Zealand he built several dry stonewalls in Northern Whangarri region using the local volcanic pumice stone and carving the fine white limestone of Omaru. In 1998 he returned to Ireland during the height of the building boom but decided to further his skills and attended the Leitrim Sculpture Centre for 1 year. Brendan then set up his sculptural business in March 1999 working and trading from Donegal Craft Village Donegal Town.

Cybernetics and Creativity Steersman - Anton Hutton

Ulster University academic Anthony Hutton will give a short talk about how the tools that we use shape the things that we make. A potter and the potters wheel work in harmony and balance. If the potter used a computer to design the pot and a robot arm to spin the pot on the wheel would the output be less creative?

ArtyBird Felt Making

Donna Lynch is ‘artybird’. She creates mixed media and textile artwork for exhibition and online sales and runs workshops and creative parties for all age groups. Working with designers?, now that should be fun!

Expect to explore the ancient art of wet felt making using needle punching merino wools. A simple process using fibres to create a unique fabric or 3D outcome. It will be interesting to see what a group of multidisciplinary designers will create. Donna is a lecturer in Art & Design and has a Masters in Applied Arts. Her diverse career has seen her turn her hand to graphic and interior design, but her passion lies within the area of textile art. Donna is a former national winner of the EBS Ireland Craft Competition - Textile Art Category (RDS Dublin).

Seliena Coyle MFA

Fresh from her recent trip to visit Boris Bally in Rhode Island, we are delighted to welcome jewellery designer, Seliena Coyle to DELVE2015. 

Born in Northern Ireland, she studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee before joining the intensive Jewellery Design & Production Skills course facilitated by the Crafts Council of Ireland.  She went on to complete an MFA at Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana. Establishing a workshop and successful practice in her hometown of Derry in 2000 gave her the opportunity to take part in multiple high profile trade, retail, national and international exhibitions.

She is also an educator, teaching 3D Design at the Fundamental Studio at Indiana University (whilst completing her MFA) and on returning to Ireland she taught within the Fine and Applied Arts Dept at Ulster. She then took up a teaching position in the US within the Metals & Jewellery Department of Savannah College of Art & Design. In 2006 she returned to Ireland to take up the position of Head of Metals at NCAD.  

Since her return she has continued to develop her practice in addition to curating and project managing several major contemporary craft projects including; CultureCraft - Culture in the Making and CultureCraft - REclaim/REpurpose.

Throughout her career she has received many awards for both her work and teaching including; a Presidential Fellowship from SCAD, the Niche Arts Educator of the Year Award, First Place RDS Craft Awards (Jewellery and Alternative Materials) and most recently she was nominated for the Spot and Invest Bursary which is enabling a return full-time to her practice in 2015.

Glass & Metal Art Workshop Jonathan Ball Jonathan is an artist and craftsman. He works from his studio in the north west  and produces unique hand forged metalwork and blown glass sculptures drawing inspiration from the windswept hills, towering mountains, the mighty Atlantic, and the rugged landscape of his adopted Kinlough.
