I think what strikes me as I listen to the instrumental is the sudden and abrupt disruption from one beat to another that sort of parallels the transition from normality to lockdown - something that hits you like a ton of bricks. All of a sudden, it dawns that you’re in a new reality, you’ve accepted it and now you’re figuring out how to react to your new predicament. Most people had their own strong reactions to the lockdown even if there was disagreements amongst them. Heck, even the disagreements were strong between one group and another. The beat also gives you this sense of an urge to disobey and rebel, which a lot of people have been doing in the name of their beliefs and right to freedom. The risks taken to do what you believe is right, and readiness to embrace any punches from the other side.
And this is my AlleyHART project for this semester. It’s been a hard struggle, but I’m very fortunate to have managed to come through with the goods. I didn’t have as much time as I would’ve liked due to circumstances beyond my control and it wasn’t as polished as I had envisaged in the earlier stages but given the circumstances, I’m very happy with the finished result.
Massive, massive thanks to Hariz Ibrahim for helping me out with this project. I done messed up not putting his name in the closing credits as I certainly couldn’t have done it without him.
This.
But now bouncy.

A very interesting approach to animation and video, perhaps I would want to try it sometime for a project of similar concept
here's my final project for the semester! tbh i'm not super satisfied with this, there's a lot of little quality improvements that i could've made with just a little more time. still, i had a lot of fun!
my so took some pics of the final few days of production, and helped me design, cut out, hinge and photograph all the fiddly little bits of paper that made up the coolest part of the short. the score was written for this project by my brother, the mvp, and recorded and produced in just a few days. also, special thanks to energy drinks. here's hoping this makes it into alleyHART?
Oh my goodness okay, so with… an hour to go from my working file to having to submit I scrambled. The best I could come up with was to put the colour and texture effect on the background (something I’d figured out on the 2nd day when I’d gotten the animation down, just needed to render it out).
I then just changed the line textures of the character to be ‘chalk’ and make them bigger to fit the aesthetic, I also felt the need to go through and colour him in black so you couldn’t see the background through him, which REALLY makes it look sketchy. To give it a nicer ‘finish’ after I traced the planning animation to ToonBoom I added in some extra frames to he end up out of frame and the frame cuts to black.
If you really think about it… He get less sketchy the further in the animation you get.. like he’s getting confident (like his artist?). It could work?
For the start I really struggled whether I should actually do the perspective shoe shift but didn’t have enough time for the number of frames it took up so I just did a quick paint over, making it black and then ‘slowly’ relieving the animation.
And I spent enough time matching the sound that I just refuse to not have it work, meaning I stole a few ‘test’ frames from when I was modeling and shoved it in the beginning. It looks slapped together and unfinished because it is.. I wish i could be proud of this, but it just makes me sad. It can be so GOOD! but only if it’s finished, some works look decent in an unfinished state but this just aint it chief. Good thing I refuse to leave it not ‘done’ and am just going to do it anyway, outside of assignment time.
I like this too much to let it fail. Screw deadlines.

Animation demo on a video call for a 6 year old who likes animation... a good excuse to draw a dog. :)
relevant to my short! studying cat walk cycles myself rn, looking at the timing/weight shift on this is really helpful
For future reference when I unfortunately have to rotoscope something out, this tutorial will be very useful. Something to consider when rotoscoping something is: how much RAM you have in your computer as After effects eats RAM like chrome, the resolution of the file you are working with, and what type of rotobrush version you are using. I downloaded the after effects beta for rotobrush 2.0 which boasts machine learning and even that couldn’t save me from the long times to live render/process the roto
