Aura Sight: Aura readers are
individuals capable of seeing the distinctive atmospheres generated by other
living things. Certain types of kitsune and other species may also be able to
see and interpret auras, but there are humans with this skill as well. Usually
aura readers are well-versed in meditation and consider themselves spiritual
people. Though the skill is present from birth, it can be honed significantly
with training. A talented aura reader can detect a variety of things from
auras, including disposition (different from mood/feelings), species, major
past experiences, and magical prowess. There is some overlap between the skills
of aura readers and mediums (mediums may be able to detect light auras, and
aura readers may be able to see vague outlines of ghosts). An aura is like a visual summary of someone’s
life. It’s a mix of colors swirling around in someone’s close proximity,
undetectable to all but a few. Vampires and other undead species do not have auras,
which makes them stand out to a reader as someone they might want to avoid. A
reader must see someone in person to be able to see their aura (TV and
photographs don’t work). The meanings of
aura colors and movements differ from person to person, but there are
generalizations that can be made. Typically, an aura reader would have to know
someone– and know their aura– before making major assumptions about what it
means. Different species have notably different auras. A reader who has
encountered an individual of a certain species before– and had a confirmation
about what they were– will be likely to successfully identify another
individual of the same species in the future, since there are similarities they
would share. If they have never encountered a species before, they will
probably know they aren’t human but won’t know what they’re dealing with.
Danielle’s power is straightforward indeed. It is what she has dubbed “Halo
Sight” in that she simply has the ability to “see” the energy “halo” of all
living things. How this works is still unknown to her, but she has fathomed the
guess that it has something to do with the unique biochemical energies they
give off at any given time. While Danielle has not taken the time or effort to
truly develop or understand this power, what she knows is this: every living
being in her eyes radiates energy, registering as a color of light surrounding
their bodies. Most normal human beings, and generally most normal living things
such as animals and plants, are surrounded by a faint glow, and from time to
time she has noticed that certain people bare certain shades of a particular
color. Those that she is more familiar with, such as friends, family,
coworkers, etc., she has come to learn their own personal color very
intimately. Strangers are often gray to begin with, and the more time she
spends with them, the clearer their color becomes. Mutants, on the other hand,
radiate a much more noticeable, brighter glow, and oddly enough, every mutant’s
Halo has a very clear and distinct color, no matter if they are friend or
stranger. Danielle believes this is caused by their inherent powers, which
magnify their Halos to almost five times that of a normal human being. The Halo
colors may lend themselves to the overall character of the person. For
instance, a person who often commits foul deeds might show as a shade of red,
while another person who is laid back, amiable and kind might show as a shade
of purple. The color of each individual is, as far as she knows, completely up
to chance, and though she has come to associate certain colors with certain
characteristics, it does not always hold true. There are times when Danielle
meets a person with a color she might associate with on type, but turns out to
be a very opposite individual. These colors do not change with mood, but can
brighten in times of stress or excitement, and fade in times of duress and
fatigue. People very close to death often have such a faint Halo it can barely
be seen. The only instance that a person’s Halo color may change would depend
upon a genuine internal change of character. For instance: a villainous person
who, through a set of dramatic events, discovers the wrong of their ways and
honest-to-goodness turns a new leaf to become “good” may change from red to
green, while similarly a good-natured person who becomes “bad” may change from
gold to black. It must be a genuine conversion of one’s true nature for the
change to take place. The only time Danielle has ever witnessed this happen
more than once was with a person who suffered from a true state of multiple-personality
disorder (AKA Dissociative Identity Disorder). Her ability allows her to easily
pick a mutant out of a crowd, even if it is disguised or a changeling, and
allows her to see them even if they have the power of invisibility due to the
fact that that it is their energy she sees, and not their physical self. A Halo
will often begin to radiate, tremble, or pulse when a mutant is using its power
due to the energy spikes. Distance seems to also have an effect on her ability.
Given what is true for distance and vision, a person that is further away is
harder to see/differentiate, and therefore the further away a person is, the
harder it is for Danielle to see their Halo. Side note: Because her power is
more of an inherent ability that comes naturally, it is rather limited in what
it actually grants her. Further development and training of her ability would
also allow her, then, to sense the presence of mutants/people without having to
see them, be able to tell the difference between the two, and given familiarity
with said mutants/people, she would also be able to sense who it actually is
without ever having to see them. This “sense” would be limited by distance-its
proximity being about 30 feet. The closer they are, the stronger her awareness
of their identity. Generally speaking:
· A deep red aura indicates a high-strung, intense disposition– someone who puts their survival before everything else.
· Orange and yellow are the colors of
energy and health; many young people have predominantly yellow and orange auras
(yellow also signifies that someone is an optimist and/or an extrovert).
Green symbolizes connectedness to nature
and community, a sense of belonging. Many supernatural creatures that aren’t
part of a pack or group tend not to have a lot of green in their auras (unless
the creature is a leshy or certain type of kitsune, as theirs tend to be
A blue aura indicates a calm disposition.
Someone with a lot of blue in their aura is probably an introvert. A sudden
increase of blue in an aura might be a sign that the person is shutting
themselves in more, which can be unhealthy.
A turquoise aura indicates that someone
is deeply concerned with helping others. Many healers, therapists, doctors,
etc. have predominantly light blue auras.
Violet is a common indication that
someone has supernatural abilities.
Silver can indicate that someone is
untrusting of others or untrustworthy themselves.
Dark tinges around the edges of an aura
indicate that the individual has witnessed a death.
Red tinges around the edges of an aura
indicate that the individual has intentionally killed someone.
A depressed person’s aura will, unsurprisingly,
be mostly black and other dark colors. It also tends to be smaller.
Lycans have auras that are small and
suffocating, as if they’re being suppressed and weighed down. They tend to
indicate that the person has killed before.
Kitsune have auras that jump around and
are especially lively. Their element is reflected in it.
Bugbears and Mara have especially large
auras that make fast, jerky movements. They can be frightening to watch.
Siren and apsara auras are light
and airy, and seem to swirl almost hypnotically around them.
Banshees have auras that are dark, and
constantly writhing and twitching. They always have dark edges indicating a
close relationship with death.
Leshy and huldrefolk auras are a
vivid green with bursts of color like blooming flowers.
Witches/warlocks have predominantly
purple auras that twinkle.
Selkies appear to have two auras, one
inside of the other. They move with a wave-like motion.
Slayers, wardens, and hunters almost
always have predominantly red, constantly moving auras.
Incubi/succubi, gancanagh, baobhan sith, and
leanan-sidhe auras almost seem to be making a “come hither” motion. They
will almost always be tinged with red.
Erinyes and Valkyries have violent,
Balam have orange, wispy auras that are vaguely
jaguar/cat-shaped, and seem to be protecting the individual.
Wendigo have auras that gradually become
less and less human and controllable. In the late stages of the illness, they
will be large with antler-like projections.
People who have been bitten by zombies
have auras that look like everyone else’s’ but something about it will feel
Empaths will have auras that change
depending on who they’re physically close to, to reflect the aura of that
Aura readers have all of the normal human
vulnerabilities (unless they are not human). They also may be more susceptible
to possession, but this isn’t a rule still for Danielle it is true. Sometimes
the ability to see auras becomes annoying, as it cannot be turned off. This
strange power of hers can be more of a nuisance than anything else. This glow
that surrounds all living things can often lead to frequent and painful
headaches, too. When faced by large crowds, and indeed large crowds of Mutants
without protective lenses, Danielle will most certainly be plagued by
headaches, and given a long enough exposure – migraines. Those that can be so
painful it can often hinder her ability to do normal things, like work and
function through typical daily routines. There are two things that can disrupt
her ability – strong natural magnetic or electrical fields/currents. Because
what her eyes register is, in fact, the energy given off by living things, both
natural electricity and magnetic fields can warp and even nullify her ability
completely. Surrounding oneself in a magnetic field will make one invisible to
her, while on the other hand surrounding oneself in a natural electrical field
will literally blind her vision temporarily.
Electrical appliances and generators do not have this effect on her and
to this day she has not figured out why. Natural lightning and electrical
charges produced by natural things (static electricity, electrical mutant
powers) however do. This has to do with the biochemistry of living, breathing
things. Her mind is fragile to
telepaths, so when they invade her mind it causes her a lot of pain. But the
results of that range from either a mild headache to a major migraine. Her mind
is slightly unstable and vulnerable to psionic attack. She’s still fairly untrained in the use of
her powers. As Danielle Sharling’s still
learning, experimenting and developing her skills, Danielle isn't yet fully aware of her capabilities.
