“I’m sorry, it must me your mother’s pussy you’re after.” Leo shrugged. “I wouldn’t know what my dads dick tastes like, thats more my sisters’ speed.” If his mother heard him talking about kaity like this for damn sure he’d be back in hell paying in blood and flesh for it but… he grinned, the look almost appearing feral.
“Honestly you seem like you’re kept in a tower anyway to have no fucking manners.”
A slight pressure from him - l e a v e - and the crowd that was gathering around them began to disperse, the people whispering among themselves; talks of people needing to do other things, others didn’t want to get in the crossfire, it didn’t matter to Leo.
He just wanted the spectators gone. He didn’t need more scrutiny in his life than what would come of verbally sparring with this upstart. He looked back to the other, name finally clicking into place.
“Right, you’re Vincent Magnolia.” He nodded in acknowledgment. “A shame you don’t live up to your family’s reputation.” Not that he was one to talk but Leo didn’t really care. He knew he was the family disappointment, meanwhile this boy still seems to think highly of himself and his abilities.
“Well if you’re here that must mean you have business.” Leo crossed his arms again. “Unless you want to waste more of my time, you can at least buy something. I suggest lavender or peppermint oil for the migraines your sight gives you.”
“Oh? Maybe you’re not as perceptive as you look. Anyone with half a brain can see I’m clearly made for taking dick, there are far better insults.” Vince snorts in disdain, and raises an eyebrow at the next sentence. “You sure she’s not following in your footsteps? It all has to come from somewhere.” He barks a laugh in rebuttal at the naivety, placing a palm flat on the table. “Unfortunately, unlike you, I was taught proper manners, I just choose to ignore them.” The pressure from Leo reaches Vince’s mind, and he narrows his eyes in suspicion, headache returning almost tenfold, but he stands his ground. He doesn’t need to leave at all. The jobs can wait. He is, however, grateful the crowds of people are slipping away– too many thoughts, at least this will alleviate the pain slightly. “Oh? Well forgive me, your highness, I wasn’t aware I had to be kept to a standard against the rest of my family. What are you going to do? Call my daddy and arrange for me to be locked up?” Vince near hisses, trying not to spit pure vitriol, but it’s so, so hard when both of them seem to be each other’s matches in the verbal sparring ring. “Mm… That is compelling…” As if on cue, his temples throb and he reaches out to touch the afflicted area before dropping his hand immediately. It seems his demeanour has changed, though. “How much? Is it ethically sourced? Are all of your materials to the highest standard? Were you aware that the percentage of deaths due to so called herbal remedies has risen by…” He’s rattling off a terrifying amount of facts about the topic. There he goes.
Leo looked Vince dead in the eye as he implied that the rape of his sister was in any way a desired effect, he couldnt feel the look of absolute hatred and malevolence coming from his eyes before it was tamped down. Leo instead semi-blocked the rest of his hot air out. There were several things he could put up with, someone insulting him, his work, hell even his family in a general sense.
Fucking no one stood before him and tell him that Kaity wanted to be raped. He watched blankly as Vince’s mouth continued to move as he spoke, not hearing him.
He could simply take this kids money and send him on his way, he seemed to react to the mental compulsion so hes easily suggestable. Or he could sell this kid the lavender oil, tail him and when hes relatively alone get the drop on him and beat him for his words.
Or he could just take him home and torture him.
Leo came back to himself long enough to realize the kid was still speaking - something about not being up to family standards and daddy locking him away - he had to crack a grin at that if this kid thought the worst that could happen to him was just being locked away.
He’s got a big storm coming.
How would he get this kid home though…?
This is not the time for a home invite, but maybe if he timed it right the mid would run out of the oil - obviously itll work for him he will make sure it does - and he only place hed be able to get it from is from leo hinself. He’ll make sure it works so perfectly that if he tries any one elses itll be just a poor sham.
His mouth was moving before he was aware of it, apparently the kid is asking questions about his products. “The oil is one silver piece, I home grow it so yes, it is ethically sourced, the resident lord has his own physicians sent to me when they need herbs for their own stores.” Physicians that happily take a little coin under the metaphorical table to keep his identity to themselves. “And I tell every person who comes to me, as I will with you, that my remedies are in no way comparable to an actual doctor, my remedies are good for keeping sickness at bay or relieving symptoms but are not the same as a doctor who can treat the source.”
Most herbal remedy deaths come from people who believe that this is better than an actual doctor, and while yes he could replicate many of the remedies theyd perscribe the difference is they are doctors and he just grows plants. Leo reached into the back and pulled out a pair of vials. “So, which shall it be, peppermint or lavender? I will admit the main difference between the two aside from the scent is mostly application, lavender works best as an aromatherapy treatment, peppermint works best as a topical treatment.” He paused a moment, looking this kid over wth a scrutinizing eye. “If I may make a suggestion, the lavender might work better for you.” He leaned on the table, placing both vials down beside his arm, looking up at the kid in front of him.
Hes going to look good in his basement with his skin flayed off.
Vince raises an eyebrow at the animosity arriving momentarily in the other’s disposition, and knows his words struck a nerve– just… He’s now not entirely sure how or where that places him. Leo’s a big boy, he can take it…? But all of a sudden, that animosity disappears and he’s left pondering if the emotions he just felt were nothing more than a trick of his psyche.
The other hasn’t said a word in response to him, so he supposes it’s possible he’s entirely done here. All he needed was directions, and he feels like he’s sunk into a mire of what he can almost taste to be dangerous. But, he supposes, his life has never been fun without that feeling. So he finishes his rambling and allows the other to speak.
So. It’s all… stuff he’s “…heard before.” He mumbles quietly, taking in Leo’s words and finding no worth in them whatsoever. “I’m aware remedies are merely plants, and will never compare up to what a real doctor prescribes in order to treat something. What I have is hardly fixable, and any noble knows not to trust whatever he buys in a simple market, so…” Vince draws himself up to his full height, and leans over the table, making direct eye contact and blinking slowly. He almost forgot, and that’s truly… truly… terrible of him. Claude’s disappearance is mere proof of his brain going sour, and his mood rottens in an instant. “Tell me what you really want. You going to tell me a little princeling like you needs money? Don’t make me laugh.” When he finds Claude, he is going to skin him for allowing him to become like this.
Leo nodded in ackowledgement of Vince's hesitancies, only just resisting the urge to roll his eyes.
Any noble worth their salt would be able to tell the difference between a charlattan attempting to swindle a person and the genuine article, especially if that noble was inclined to magic as this kid is. As it is he couldnt stop the eyeroll as vince drew himself up in an attempt to loom over him.
It might have been intimidating if leo was anyone else.
Maybe. The fact that Vince is merely a child throwing a near constant tantrum really dampens the whole look.
"Boy if you're trying to intimidate me good fuckin' luck." He shrugged and reached forward to pluck the vials off the table. Leo folded his arms, slowly pushing a charm for pain numbing into the pair. "What I really want is to sell my shit. I've got bills to pay."
He sighed, moving the vials to his other hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. Leo took this moment to push a bit of extra power, Vince would probably feel something change if he were paying attention, though itd be difficult for him to place what kind of power is being used.
Leo didn't want to put too much of his own power into it, so instead he simply used a bit of his own power to amplify the effect. On an average person this would completely remove the pain of any wound - enough that even someone with a mangled limb wouldn't be able to feel it.
An ability he cultivated to drive a few of his subjects mad, hed place them under this magic and lett them watch with full clarity while he carved them like a turkey.
For Vince, seeing as his migraine is due to an imbalance in his own power, it should at least lessen it if not remove it entirely for a short duration.
"How about this, I'll give you a free sample and you leave me be." He placed the vials back onto the table, looking up at the man. "I have bills to pay and stock to move so if you're done tossing insults around?"
Leo hoped the boy would take the sample and be gone. Afterwards he'd more than likely be seeing the Magnolia boy around fairly soon once the numbing effect wore off.

me, crouched down in front of my tomato plants, examining a pattern of insect bites on their lower leaves: i’m going to fucking kill whoever did this. i’m going to kill them for you. don’t worry, babies. I’m going to murder every single son of a bitch who ever got a mouthful of you. they’ll die screaming
my neighbor, who i did not realize was also outside, standing behind the fence: oh! okay. you’re talking to the plants. okay.
Ten Mistakes New Herb Gardeners Make (and How to Avoid Them!)
Mistake 1: Growing from seed. When you first start out trying to grow fresh herbs, I recommend you begin by trying to grow from seedlings rather than planting your own seeds. These great little starter plants are widely available in grocery stores in the late spring. For the same price as a packet of fresh herbs from the produce section, you can buy your own little starter plant. Lots can go wrong in the seed to seedling transition (including not thinning out plants properly), so its probably best to begin by skipping that complicated task or you are in danger of washing out before you really begin.
Mistake 2: Starting with the wrong varieties. I recommend you start by trying to grow fresh basil. It is the perfect trainer herb. First, basil grows quickly, allowing you to observe the effects of your care more easily. Second, basil leaves wilt visibly when not watered enough, but recovers well if you water the wilted plant. This makes basil a great ‘canary in the mineshaft’ to help you figure out how much water is enough.
Mistake 3: Watering herbs like houseplants. Instead, water herbs a moderate amount every day. While some houseplants flourish with one solid watering per week, most delicate herbs require moderate and regular watering. This is particularly true during hot summer months. If you have good drainage at the bottom of your pot (at least a drainage hole, possibly rocks beneath the soil), it will be difficult to water herbs too much.
Mistake 4: Not cutting early and often. As a novice gardener, it may seem like your puny little plant just isn’t ready for a trip to the barber, but then you will find yourself sitting there wishing for leaves without much success. Again, basil is a great herb to practice pruning. As with all herbs, you want to cut the herb just above a set of growing leaves. With basil, when you cut the plant that way, the originally trimmed stem will no longer grow. However, two new stems will grow around the original cutting, creating a “V” shape (see the photo above, can you spot the Vs?). If you don’t trim basil aggressively, it will continue to grow straight up, and become too tall and top-heavy. Making your first trim approximately 3-4” above the soil produces a nice sturdy plant. Of course you want to be sure you are always leaving a few good sturdy leaves on the plant (see below). As it continues to grow, continue to prune it approximately every 3-4" for a nice solid plant. I like to let it grow for some time and then cut back to within 2-3 inches of the original cut. After only a few early trial cuts, this usually makes for a nice clipping with plenty of basil to use for a pizza.
Mistake 5: Taking the leaves from the wrong place. When you are just starting out it seems to make so much sense to pick off a few big leaves around the bottom of the plant, and let those tender little guys at the top keep growing. Wrong. Leave those large tough old guys at the bottom alone. They are the solar panels that power your herb’s growth. Once your plant is big enough to sustain a decent harvest, keep on taking from the top, as you have been when you were pruning. That way you get all those tender new herbs that are so tasty, and your plant gets to keep its well developed solar power system in place. Plus, if you pluck from the base and leave the top intact, you get a tall skinny plant that will flop over from its own weight (and yes, I know this from experience). When you pluck from the top, instead of clipping off just below a pair of leaves, you want to clip off just above a pair of leaves. It is a bit counter-intuitive as a novice, but trust me it works. The place where the leaf joins the stem is where new growth will occur when your plant sends off new stems in a V.
Mistake 6: Letting your plants get too randy. If you are pruning regularly, this may never become an issue, but unless you are growing something for its edible flowers, be sure to cut back herbs before they start growing flowers. My friend once brought me to her backyard garden and pointed, frustrated, at her wimpy, small basil plants. “I just keep tending them, but they don’t even produce enough leaves to put on a salad!” she lamented. I pointed to the glorious stalk of flowers at the top of each plant, “That’s your problem” I explained. Because herbs are kind of like college boys: if you give them half a chance, they will focus all their energy on procreation and neglect growth. If you want leaves, keep cutting off the little flower buds whenever you find them (see photo above), and it will encourage your plant to focus on growing more leaves.
Mistake 7: Using tired soil with no nutrients. Tired soil that has been sitting in your garden or lawn for ages often looks grey and a little depressing. Would you want to grow in that stuff? Give your plants a dose of the good stuff and they’ll thank you for it. I grow my herbs in a combination of potting soil, used coffee grounds (with a near-neutral PH, available for free at Starbucks), and organic compost. If I have some on hand, I also throw in crushed egg shells. Those without access to compost (and no deep commitment to organic growing) may find Miracle grow useful. My momma swears by it for tomatoes. A diluted solution of Miracle grow occasionally can help many herbs flourish.
Mistake 8: Getting in a rut. There is an element to passion about herb gardening. In order to be good at it, you need to feel rewarded. So don’t stick too long with one or two herbs just because they work. Branch out to a few other basic herbs that you will use regularly in your kitchen. There are few things more rewarding as an urban foodie than being able to pop out to the fire escape to clip fresh herbs to use in my cooking. Once you have become comfortable with basil, I recommend moving on to try growing oregano, mint, rosemary and thyme. All are regularly useful herbs in the kitchen, and all are relatively easy to grow. You will notice that rosemary cleaves after cutting in a somewhat similar way to basil, but grows much more slowly, so the effect is difficult to notice. Some plants also respond to clipping by throwing out more full leaves at their base. I have long wanted to grow cilantro but have not had much luck with it.
Mistake 9: You mean there’s more than one kind of mint? When choosing herbs, read the label carefully. For example, there are two main varieties of oregano: Mediterranean and Mexican. Mediterranean oregano is the more common variety, and what you likely own if you have conventional dried oregano in your cupboard. I have Mexican oregano growing on my back fire escape. I love Mexican oregano in spicy dishes, for making beans from scratch, and often use it in tomato dishes where I don’t want the flavor to seem too much like marinara. Similarly, there are many different kinds of mint. You don’t want to be thinking of the pungent spearmint plant and accidentally take home the much more subtle (and not mojito savvy) applemint by mistake.
Mistake 10: Feed me Seymour! If you are planting in soil instead of pots, take care that your cute little herb seedling doesn’t become a giant plant that takes over your garden. A word of warning for oregano and mint: both can be voracious growers. If you are planting outside in a garden, rather than in pots, you may want to consider potting these herbs and then burying the pots in the ground. This will add a measure of control to the root systems of these herbs, which can otherwise take over a garden and strangle nearby neighbors. When in doubt, check out wikipedia, they usually are careful to point out which herbs are in danger of overwhelming your garden.
Some really useful info here if you’re new to herb gardening.

“That’ll be the mint and the information on balms for your shoulder arthritis” Leo said, gsthering up a handful of sprigs the old man on the other side of the stall was pointing at. He deftly tied them together and handed them out to the man, getting a piece of paper and pencil out to jot down the notes on the balms and quantities for bath soaks on. “All together its 5 bronze.”
The man smiled, holding out the change in a shaking hand. “You should move to the city, young man,” he said. “You’re always coming in every weekend and its such a dangerous road these days. Talk of demons.” He said the last phrase almost conspiratorily, making Leo crack a grin.
“I’ll take my chances, I love the open space out there too much.” The old man shook his head, said a few pleasantries, and allowed his granddaughter to lead him off with a nod of thanks.
Leo liked that old man, whenever he opened shop he could always count on him coming by to restock with his family on herbs and his vegetables. They claimed that they were the best their family had ever had and leo had to stifle a chortle when he was told that.
Yeah like vegetables grown out of corpses would be anything but.
Leo turned back to his wares, doing a mental count of what remained. It was early enough on saturday, the part of the market he opened in would be getting busy soon and hopefully he’d sell out of the mint, tumeric, and ginger. Yields had been good that year so he had an abundance at home that he was looking to sell off today.
Leo pulled out a small baggie, a man had recently come to him concerning his streak of poor luck and had asked for help, and began putting together a charm for him. Some shamrocks, the leaves of a jade plant, jasmine, and basil, all pretty common plants but leo was able to make them into more. A few select words under his breath and he felt the hand that held the pouch warm with power and suddenly go cold as the plants soaked it up. That should give it the boost it would need to break this mans poor luck.
It’s not even been an hour here, let alone a day, and Vincent Magnolia is fucking pissed. Not only was the so called transport arranged for him an entire crock of shit that lasted much too long for it to be anything other than second class, but the combination of the stench of the cart, the rocking motions of it, and a whole host of other stimuli lead to one of his famous migraines returning at full force. He’d ask for a drink, or even the location of the nearest pub, but he holds his tongue in favour of keeping his mouth clean. He’s in a rotten mood, but he can perhaps temper it with relaxing in whatever accommodation there is for him. He doubts it, however, and snorts.
One would have thought his migraine would have subsided by now, but the more time he spends in this– what is it? A crowded marketplace? (Christ, he’s in a worse place than he thought) The more his head throbs and his vision swims. There’s no helping it, though, it’s not like he can’t stop his job for the sake of his petty brain. So he steps. And steps. And he’s sweating now, and stops bothering entirely, letting the bustling crowds of people steer him hopefully out of harm’s way. His hands are tucked firmly into his pockets, which is his undoing, he supposes, once he knocks into a stall and finds himself having nothing to brace himself with. He pulls himself up, and the aroma of herbs and vegetables and something else he can’t quite place fills his nostrils. He lifts up a stem of ginger, eyeing it cautiously, and puts it down almost immediately, fingers trembling with the effort.
He’s bored by it all, and thus his gaze drops to the shorter man, and he smiles, smiles, smiles, until it’s not only his temples aching but his mouth, too. “What are you doing so far from home, little boy? Your mother must be very worried. Or is it your unsavory actions that have taken you out of her favour?”
@famicidals Quite a few had stopped by and Leo had already begun bracing himself for the worst part about a saturday market when a boy -Leo wouldnt place him as older, or if he had to not by many years - knocked into his stall. The boy was obviously out of sorts, sweating bullets, he was panting from pain (supposedly) and his eyes really werent focusing on anythhing. So either a fever or maybe a headache or a migraine, but leo can get something for the - "What are you doing so far from home, little boy? Your mother must be very worried. Or is it your unsavory actions that have taken you out of her favour?” Any intention of helping him out instantly vanished. "Pain what looks like, maybe a fever or a migraine..." Leo paused a moment, searching his face. "Or maybe you're just a rude fucking inbred excuse for what passes as nobility." The frown on his face got more pronounced until he was glowering at the boy in front of him. A few of the people around him started whispering at the mention of nobility, gaining them a few spectators. "I was going to offer to help that pain, I have a few things that'd at least be able to numb it for a while until you get where you need to be, but if you're going to be an asshole you can fuck off." Leo took another look at him, something about his face was familiar but he couldnt figure out what it was. The boy was nobility at least, finer clothes thananyone here, the aura of the elite hanging off him, and a glint in his eye that tells leo he'd been given everything he'd ever wanted and then some. "Though this town's kinda small, makes me wonder what the nobility would have to do here." he sneered the label for this boy, giving another once-over. "Or are you on your way back home? You must be starving for Daddy's cock." His own lips pulled up in a smirk.
