To fulfill the requirements for their respective composition classes, upperclass and underclass music majors must either provide or receive mentorship with an assigned student for the upcoming recital. The piece must end up being performed by the mentee and meet instrumental technique and musicality expectations. Assigned mentorships are listed below.”

“Oh boy,” Demyx sighed under his breath, pulling on the strap of the guitar case that was slowly slipping off his shoulder. His comp teacher had been mentioning a collaborative assignment for a while snow, but he really wasn’t expecting it to take the form of a mentorship. At least it didn’t sound too bad; Demyx would be able to handle mentoring, as long as it wasn’t with a percussionist. 

Demyx’s compositions were usually very melodic, so it doesn’t really get along with percussion very well.

The guitarist’s cyan eyes hastily scan the list of students included in the assignment, until he sees who his mentee is and a smile grows on his lips.

“Demyx Lemerre - Tamaki Suoh”

Yes! Not a percussionist! 

It’d been a while since Demyx worked on the piano, but that surely wouldn’t be a problem since his usual musical style would still translate well to the black and white keys. And although he never worked with Tamaki before since he’s an underclassman, he seemed like a really talented kid so it might even be fun mentoring him. Demyx pulls out his phone and sends the freshman a text, fingers tapping quickly on the screen before clicking send.

hey, tamaki! i just left jazz and saw that i’ve been assigned as ur mentor for the music comp thing. lmk when u wanna start working on it!

He scoffed under his breath. Demyx could defend his choice in movies all he wanted, but it didn’t change the fact that every bizarre indie film he had put in made little sense to Zexion. In fact, every film had been borderline dreadful, and the only reason he sat in silent misery was because of the opportunity to sit close to the musician.

Pleased when Demyx agrees to let him pick the movie, he takes the remote and starts flipping through the options on Netflix. Zexion was hardly the kind of person to enjoy movies in general, but there had been a few that he found interesting. He tended to enjoy the more suspenseful, frightening films that got his heart beat up, which is why he was currently flipping through the “horror” section.

He settles on the film adaptation to one of his favorite Stephen King novels. Once he returns the TV remote to the coffee table, the reader leans back to his previous position, even allowing himself to inch closer to the blond’s side.

“The Shining is a classic,” he says softly. “It’s one of my favorite books.”

A considerably loud sigh escapes the musician’s lips when Zexion chooses the movie to watch. It wasn’t that Demyx didn’t like Stephen King; he knew King was his roommate’s favorite author, which meant that he was definitely a good writer.

No, Demyx just didn’t really get along with horror films. Ever. It wasn’t a coincidence that he’d successfully put off watching the Shining for years, his only knowledge of it being the twins, the tricycle, and the infamous, “Here’s Johnny!”

The thing is, Demyx knows it’ll be impossible to convince the psychologist to choose a different movie. And it was Zexion’s turn. So as much as he hated the idea of actually watching the movie, Demyx really had no choice.

“Okay, yeah, I guess. I know it’ll probably be good because you like it, but jeez, I hope I can survive this.”

Demyx has a tendency to take up whatever space he’s given, which is something he noticed immediately after the blond moved in. The feeling of the other man’s leg against his, and even the long arm stretched over the back of the couch, is nothing new. Surprisingly, he doesn’t mind the slight physical contact, even though it would have been uncomfortable with anyone else. Something about Demyx made the position tolerable, if not even enjoyable.

“If we’re watching a movie, I’m choosing,” he announces with a small wave of his hand. It seemed like the more likely of the two options. If they sat on the couch and listened to Pink Floyd for the rest of the night, Zexion would grow bored quickly and retreat to the tranquility of his bedroom. “The one we watched last night was boring.”

As blunt of a person as he is, Zexion doesn’t have a problem telling his roommate that his taste in movies wasn’t ideal. “So let’s watch something that won’t make me tired, okay?”

Demyx sighs loudly, a dramatic look of feigned hurt in his expression as he looks over at Zexion. Of course he didn’t really mind Zexion’s bluntness about things; in fact, he actually really liked that about him. Demyx is just one of those people that take everything literally, so his roommate’s honesty was always helpful, even if it was usually brutally so. 

“How can you not like Napoleon Dynamite? It’s the best movie that’s ever been made. A film masterpiece.” 

The blonde shakes his head in defeat, before giving a small shrug, a small grin on his lips. “Okay, alright. Whatever. What movie do you wanna watch then?”

❝That’s unnecessary,❞ he huffs under his breath. ❝But I know any attempts I make to discourage you are futile.❞ Zexion continues to clean off the table, washing the dishes in the sink and setting them aside to dry. He doesn’t mind cleaning up after himself — in fact, he quite enjoys it — but Demyx’s cheerful company always made the task even more enjoyable. It was strange how much joy his roommate brought him, especially since he isn’t the most joyful individual himself. 

When he’s finished scrubbing the pan he used for the stir fry, he wipes his hands on the dish towel and heads for the living room. Most evenings after dinner, depending on their schedules, the two of them would sit down and spend time with each other before bed. Whether it was doing their own thing in the same room or doing something together, it usually ended the evening on a better note. He had grown surprisingly fond of the private time they spent together. The reader slouches down onto the sofa, crossing one leg over the other and looking to the other expectantly.

❝What are we doing tonight?❞ he inquires. Hopefully Demyx hadn’t planned to watch another cheesy movie — the last one had nearly caused him to doze off.

Demyx waits quietly while Zexion finishes up the plates, his hands fidgeting with his keys as usual. The fact that he’s always messing with them is probably the reason why he keeps misplacing them anyway. 

The blonde walks over and plops himself down beside Zexion, somehow managing to spread himself across whatever free space was left on the couch. The jingle of Demyx’s keys continued to ring as he spun them around. It was probably an annoying little sound, but it’s not really surprising that he’d keep making it anyway.

“Huh,” Demyx hums in response to his roommate’s question. “I dunno... we can watch a movie maybe? Or listen to music. I’m good with whatever.”

He honestly wouldn’t mind doing either of those; it was just one of those days when the chipper Demyx who was usually full of ideas for them couldn’t come up with any ideas. Well, whatever ideas came to him right then involved leaving the dorm and Demyx is just way too lazy for that, especially after having such a long day of rehearsing. He’d actually be content with just relaxing like this with his friend.

Zexion expects the hug before he even sees the blond lunging for him with a wide grin and open arms. Every muscle in his body tenses at the sudden physical contact but he does not decline the affection. Over time, he’s learned that Demyx’s excitement is inevitable and an unstoppable force. He accepts it with a stifled sigh and a hesitant pat on the taller student’s back. ❝You’re welcome,❞ says the reader as they pull away. It’s somewhat of a relief to see the musician’s jovial response to the sweater. He had struggled with what kinds of gifts to buy and the trip to the mall with Kurogane had been nothing less than stressful. Hopefully, he would enjoy the other gifts just as much as the hideous jumper in his hands.

❝I’d suggest washing it between uses,❞ he scoffs. He hopes Demyx won’t literally wear it every day. ❝But it’s hand-wash only, which means it’s unlikely that you will…❞

“Yep, yeah,” Demyx says contentedly, although it’s obvious that he’s probably not worrying about washing it any time soon. Especially since he really is capable of wearing it every day...

He’s still smiling and he runs a hand through his blonde hair, a small chuckle escaping his lips as he gazes at the wonderfully gaudy sweater he’s holding. “Jeez, this is just making me that much more excited to get you the perfect gift!”

It’s true that he’d already started shopping for Zexion’s gifts, but he really hadn’t expected this sudden early gift from the slate-haired roommate. His efforts would just have to be doubled from whatever ridiculous level they were at before, but that only made Demyx anticipate the gift search.

Zexion makes a face when his roommate stuffs his mouth full of food and continues the conversation. He lost track of how many times he asked Demyx to finish chewing before speaking. It is impolite and a little disgusting, but tonight the reader rolls his eyes and returns his attention to the steaming stir fry beneath his nose.

❝ Don’t waste too much money, ❞ he cautions. ❝ Christmas is in a few days and I won’t have the apartment covered in decor until February. ❞ There’s a soft smile on his mouth as he says this. Leaving holiday decorations around the dormitory seems like the sort of thing Demyx would do, whether it was intentional or not.

After clearing his plate, he sets the dish aside and looks across the table at the blond. It seems fitting to present him with the repulsively-festive Christmas sweater he had purchased at the mall the other day. Knowing Demyx, he would want to wear before Christmas, on Christmas, and likely afterwards as well. It’s the sort of present that doesn’t need to be wrapped or stuck beneath a tree. 

❝ Actually, I have an early gift for you. ❞ He stands and disappears into his room for a moment, letting the musician sit in suspense. The sweater had been sitting in his closet for a few days, ever since he and Kurogane had gone shopping at the mall. Along with a few other things, it had been cleverly hidden in case someone got curious.

Zexion returns with the sweater hanging off his arm. It’s green and decorated with a big fuzzy Christmas tree — complete with tiny metallic-wrapped gifts that stick off the front. It was cringe-worthy, in his opinion, but he knew Demyx would appreciate it.

❝ I hope it’s the right size. ❞

An early gift? To be completely honest, the ever-present childish side of Demyx was completely excited about the idea of an early gift. But it also reminded him that he wasn’t totally finished with getting Zexion’s gift. 

The musician was one of those people who went ridiculously over the top with gifts trying to find the perfect things for each friend, so it always managed to take him a ridiculously long time to finally put stuff together for them. It was one of the holiday traditions he most dedicated himself to, and the fact that Zexion was already giving him something just made him that much more eager to get his roommate the perfect gifts. 

When he sees Zexion walk in with the sweater on his arm, a wide smile spreads across the blonde’s face and before he knows it he’s out of his seat, pulling his roommate into a hug. 

After a few seconds, Demyx realizes he’s probably totally messing with Zexion’s personal space and steps back, taking the sweater in his hands and beaming as he carefully looks at the gaudy festive designs on it. It was perfect.

“Ah!!! Thank you so much, Zex. This is so great! I’m probably gonna wear this every day now!”

“Zexion? I like him a lot. He’s honestly a really great person once you get to know him, and I like spending time with him. Sometimes I get on his nerves but he’s usually pretty good at not totally chewing me out over it, so I gotta be thankful. I kinda worry about him sometimes, though. He’s always studying or working and it looks like it really tires him out.”

What instruments do you play? Do you want to learn any others?

“I play the guitar, mandolin, drums, and piano. I also play the ukulele, but that kind of doesn’t count as a real instrument... Oh, and I know how to play the bass but I’m more of a treble kind of guy so I don’t really practice.” 

He laughed, pausing for a moment to think. 

“Hmm. Well, I’ve been thinking of picking up the sitar. I’ve heard it’s a super tricky instrument and it’ll be interesting tuning all twenty one strings, but I always loved the sound it makes. Or maybe I’ll experiment with brass and play the sax. I’d be the hip new Bill Clinton!”

The food Zexion had prepared really did end up looking super delicious, and Demyx was all too eager to sit across from him to try out the meal. He just barely gets to sit down before the slate-haired man asks him that question, though, and the little falter in Demyx’s happy expression was something that definitely wouldn’t pass the psychologist unnoticed. 

Caught admittedly off guard, Demyx just shakes his head with an agitated little smile. “Uhh, nope. I don’t do that. Not my kinda thing.”

Demyx, of course, was definitely not on good terms with anyone in his family. He shouldn’t really let it get to him because they’re so far away and out of touch with him, but whenever they were brought up it was always… unsettling for  him. Which was not a feeling the blonde musician liked very much at all. Demyx picks up a fork to taste the food Zexion had prepared, even if he did feel slightly less appetized now.

❝ Oh. ❞ He stabs a green pepper with his fork and lifts it up to his mouth, speaking once more before taking a bite.  ❝ I suppose we’ll both be here, then. ❞ It went without saying that Zexion didn’t have any kind of family to go back to — his mother had passed away when he was in high school and Demyx knew of the fact by now — but curiously enough, he didn’t know anything about the musician’s relationship with his family. Perhaps he didn’t have any family to spend the holidays with either.

He listens to the soft music playing from across the dormitory, letting the sound fill the silence between their conversation. If family was not something his roommate wanted to delve into, he wouldn’t press the subject. However, he does know that Demyx enjoys the festive spirit of Christmas, and that was probably a safe route for their conversation to take.

❝ I haven’t celebrated Christmas in years, ❞ he admits. ❝ But if you wanted to decorate the dormitory… I wouldn’t mind. As long as the tree is fake. I believe I have a mild allergy to pine trees. ❞

It wasn’t too surprising that Demyx’s mood was easily lifted again once the psychologist pretty much gave him permission to decorate. A smile quickly grows on his lips at the thought of how great it’d be to decorate the dorm they shared.

“So... you’re saying that as long as the tree is fake, any decorations are fair game?”  He raises a brow, nodding. “I can do that.”

He scoops some food into his mouth, and even though Zexion always ends up yelling at him for it, he still manages to talk while he’s chewing. Demyx is probably gross for doing this. “Y’know, now that you said I could decorate there’s no way I’m giving up on it. I’m gonna decorate so awesomely that there’s no way the festiveness won’t catch onto you.”
