theres a genuine phenomenon of like collective erasure of megumi from the entire fandoms mind and opinion that its insane. i think its the aftereffects of lobotomy kaisen, which.. HOW are we still feeling the aftershocks of this in the era of the internet where trends and meme die faster than theyre born, like????

ik this has been said before but the story of jjk really is just someone always trying to keep megumi alive, and like. megumi keeps trying to kill himself till Almost The Very End. this is why i love yuuji (and gojo) being the protags of the stories. because the megumi stuff happens in the background. but its always there. i think gege realised it too, thats why megumi is not the main focus anymore (puts on The Badge.) and Then it all builds up into Shinjuku Showdown and its no longer in the background

i believe saying "megumi keeps trying to kill himself" is a misconstruction of whats happening - because hes not. whats happening is that he will put everyones life over himself, hes the only character to not be scared of death his entire life, and he doesnt believe he deserves to live. and because hes always on the frontlines, hes the one who gets hit, severely, first.

the story revolves around megumi pushing forward despite despite despite. his entire life is about pushing to live, desperately looking for someone to tell him its okay for him to live, despite the world wanting him dead. hes alive by the skin of his teeth.

but still, gojo and yuuji want to save him and love him desperately and to death and beyond.

and megumi is the heart of the story.

this line haunts me. "forget fushiguro megumi. you are my shadow now." because it should be obvious. sukuna tamed makora, makora is his. right?

but its not. and sukuna knows this painfully. theyre not his, none of the shikigami are.

agito looks like a caricature of a shikigami fusion. they look like sukuna slapped a few different parts on the wall, vaguely recalling the nue yokai of heian, to look like makora, and called it a day as long as it healed.

agitos name is just random pieces of megumis brilliance ripped apart, squashed together to make gibberish. theres not a bit of the elegance and depth that went into "the well's unknown abyss" and "chimera shadow garden".

no single ten shadows user has ever tamed makora. makora's first instinct is to kill its own life force.

every single one of the shikigami, from the bath to the shinjuku showdown, wasnt protecting sukuna. they were protecting megumi's body.

for the month and a half in the entire history of japan and curses that makora has been tamed, they loved fushiguro megumi.

i love tengen because shes a misogynistic woman who made upholding patriarchy her job, who made the system that eats children, same way she eats children. she made herself the exception to the system, untouchable, she escaped it by putting everyone else down. and it worked so well because shes brilliant. and obviously once upon a time it came from a place of good faith, shes the one who taught the world jujutsu. but as the years went by she chose herself over anyone and everyone else, she began to equate her privilege and power with freedom, no matter how many people it would destroy and kill. and when we finally meet her its her doing that exact thing - omitting her fault, choosing herself, making sure she's safe and lives through it, no matter how many people it will kill. she betrayed her people, kenjaku among them, and she betrayed herself. because thats what power held too long in one person hand will do to you. you will betray yourself for nothing, because you fear death.

but six eyes is back, just in time. perfect. what do you mean theres a copy of ten shadows thats not ten shadows and hes a special grade?

and wheres her vessel now? dead? by a gun? a gun. and her six eyes? what do you mean by a zenin. Again??

which heavenly pact? .... oh no.

What The FUCK Do You Mean The Only Viable Star Plasma Vessel Is Ten Fucking Shadows? Are You Kidding? No. no.

and thats how tengen "accepted the circumstances". no more plasma vessels for tengen. ten shadows can go fuck itself.

and then her kenjaku Traps her 6 eyes, and not even two weeks later, her Failed plasma vessel brings Another copy of the ten shadows (the copy technique with a storage shikigami), AND the very Real and Back Ten Shadows Boy, Both Of Her Boys' (6 Eyes and Sukuna) Favourite whose father killed her Last plasma vessel.

and then she watches as the entire group of people, that being four special grades and a HR 0CE user, who just came down to see her is at Ten's beck and call???? yeah, no way shes telling them shit about the barriers being hers too. knowing their all wretched lack with Ten and fate, hes gonna figure out on his own in a week anyway. (And He Almost Did.)

and what really fucks me up in a good way is that, cursed energy et al level, out of the entire lineup there, megumis arguably the weakest. (i say arguably because chosos there). hes also the one who calls every shot, to the point where all he has to say is "excuse me" and yuuta, the strongest after gojo satoru immediately steps in to get the conversation to where megumi wants it to go.

as if sukuna fucking up megumis soul and technique isnt enough i forgot he also fucked his body up. i mean i knew, but in the manga it was just a cut to 4 arms. seeing the animation and the actual body horror is messing me up so bad now im scared of what mappa will do… i also actually gagged at sukuna muffling 6 year old megumi i was literally that ishowspeed audio “GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER BITCH ILL KILL YOU” istg

sukuna isnt unnecessarily cruel to megumi. sukuna likes megumi. he respects, needs and wants his strength.

every horrible, disgusting thing hes done to megumi, sukuna did it in that way, inflicted that amount of pain and hurt because thats the extraordinarily huge amount of strength it took to make him stay down.

megumi's soul broke. he took fifteen fingers at once. something yuuji, Created And Bioengineered To Do, couldnt do at ten. He! Still! Wrestled Sukunas Soul And Technique! Away From Him!!!! because its Fushiguro Fucking Megumi. He Stands On Business Ten Toes Down Even If His Legs Get Cut Off.

kenjaku, the coldest, smartest and most critical thinker of the bunch, completely understands the effort sukuna undertakes to keep megumi down. because they took the same amount of effort. they let noritoshi and choso off the hook without killing them because they knew neither of them could to anything to stop them. thats not the case with megumi. because megumi's just as intelligent as kenjaku, if not smarter.

and they go down the exact same way. for kenjaku? twice. (tengen and takaba distracting them)

in order for their plans to work, they had to destroy megumi even more severely than gojo.

kenjaku themself decided megumi had to be taken of earlier (tsumiki was cursed a year and a half before shibuya).

kenjaku and sukuna were running in circles around megumi just to take him down.

i genuinely cannot understate the amount of effort it took to make megumi stay down.

and were talking about sukuna. someone who likes the most to fight people who wont get one-hit. he doesnt care about hurting people who are already down unless theyre directly in his way.

and by the time sukuna switches into og form, megumi's dead and buried, cut away from his own technique. its why sukuna lost access to ten shadows, because gojo fucked them both up so severely, megumi couldnt power 10S anymore. he took 5 unlimited voids head on. no one in history could have ever even think about surviving that. its like saying oh yeah a person could survive getting run over by a tank 5 times, or getting a nuke dropped directly on them. five. times.

and sukunas fond of megumi. he has no reason to hurt him anymore because megumis exactly where he wants and needs him.

and megumis too overwhelmed by UV to feel anything.

if sukuna Actually switched to megumi, theyd fall down to the ground and eat shit, because megumis soul and brain arent. connected. to the body. physically and metaphysically. megumis put too far away. he cant feel, see, hear anything. hes just not there.

because sukuna changed forms fighting kashimo. and it took yuuji and yuuta fucking sukunas shit up to get anywhere close to megumi to talk. but he still physically couldnt move. Because Of The Bath ❗

All Of That To Say: were safe from the transformation body horror hurting meg. thats fyemaj's beautiful, horrifying canon divergence.

what were NOT safe, however, is the bath❗footage. and that im fucking terrified of. because mappa needs to get it through All Of Yalls Head, that megumis soul is physically buried by tens of atmospheres of force. he cant. move. sukuna never thought itd be possible for him to move after the bath. thats why hes bewildered by megumi waking up.

I always found intresting how Megumi is (mostly) associated with water and Yuji is associated with snow BUT Sukuna is associated with fire. The fact that fire can on extreme temperatures melt snow, evaporate water(melt and evaporate are read as "crush the spirit") but also a lot of snow and a lot of water estinguish fire and now is just basically another form of water while fire and water are fundamentally incompatible and...and idk i'm making shit up but i feel like it means something, i just don't know what. Especially how Yuji, who has such a warm personality and all, is given the cold, the unforgiving snow, which is so weird for a shonen protagonist. It also as a nostalgic element to it. It almost feels like it fits modulo Yuji better

I'm not articulate enough nor good at analysing characrer themes, and it's also like 2 a.m for me, so forgive me if some of this(or all) doesn't make much sense but i'm curious what are your thoughts on this

*Bonus for your Megumi was a star plasma vessel: Megumi is associated with water as we already established, guess who else is HEAVLY associated with water in jjk? Riko Amanai, THE star plasma vessel (it's mostly in the anime though, if i remember correctly, so i get it if it doesn't count)

im gonna be so real, only thanks to you just now i realised that snow is like, yuujis thing. like on a character symbol level. which is super interesting, but also is perfect for yuujis duality - snow, As Yuuji Says And Shows Himself, is the ultimate symbol of childhood innocence. it will also kill you and mutilate you brutally.

which is also interesting in sukunas "family" constellation, the three people closest to him - megumi's water, yuuji's snow, uraume's ice.

which, i dont know what to make of it aside from #noticing, but megumi and uraume are the only people (aside from ino, but this isnt about him)* in the entire series whose techniques revolve around water in two different states of matter - solid and liquid.

and im pretty sure uraume utilises the reaction of turning solid h2o into gas h2o, and they are called "the frozen star". and with megumis possible star plasma vessel status? thats all 4 states of matter submitted to sukuna, consensually and non-consensually. with the entire constellation (uraume, gojo, megumi, tengen).

uraume is an element. one of the few needed to create and sustain life.

megumis both elements (water, light) and the lack of it (shadow), a superposition of nature (connected to both earth and space), if you will.

sukunas fire is a reaction (literally, fuga is about barothermic explosions or sth, im no good at physics, and fire itself is air burning).

yuujis a natural phenomenon. which juxtaposes his creation as a bioweapon.

but as i said - snow, even as its used in the series - is both representative of childhood innocence and joy, family and community (yuujis domain expansion, ozawas epilogue); as well as running someone down and putting fear of god into them and making them beg the snow gets to them before you do. the cold, the inevitability of nature that will kill you.

when you put it like that it makes perfect sense for yuuji.

what's also interesting (sukufushi soulmatism i hate you) is that taming fire and water are the very first signs and achievements of humanity. you need both fire and water for life to exist. just like you need both sukuna and megumi for this story to exist. and they belong to the two people who consider themselves monsters.

and the thing is neither of them are associated with their elements on the surface. and peoples reactions to it are the exact. same. (jogo: "fire? i thought sukunas technique was severing and slicing". noritoshi: "water?!") because their elements symbolise their humanity.

and isnt the only time in modulo, that couldve only happened with both of them gone, when sukuna is mentioned by name immediately followed "in fushiguro megumi's body"? intertwined. i hate them. sukuna stay the fuck away from my child.

*his technique and character isn't about the elements and shikigami and (said with love) being a cheap copy of ten shadows, but about him being the intermediary, as thats his purpose in the showdown - to be the channel for nanami's technique and carry on his memory.

and dont ask me where kirara fits into the grander star constellation of jujutsu, because I Have No Clue. love her to bits, but genuinely, no idea how she fits into it all, cus she has no major or minor connection to either of the world makers (kenjaku, tengen).

also i need you to elaborate on melt and evaporate can be read as "crushing the spirit". you mean in japanese?? the kanji or the kana??

and YES water is connected to riko The Star Plasma Vessel!!!! and the anime is laying it on thick, with three seperate instances - the okinawa beach, the aquarium and riko in a bath. (THE BATH ❗❗❗)

and the thing i hate about megumi star plasma theory is that it ties everything in this story about fate so beautifully. because if it is true, his dad broke fate itself which led to megumi not becoming tengens vessel. tengen, six eyes and the star plasma vessel are connected by fate and megumi and satoru are the only two people cannonically connected from their last life four hundred years ago? wdym the story started with failing to save the star plasma vessel and ended with saving the star plasma vessel? wdym the myth of gojo satoru started with failing to save the SPV and ended with failing to save the SPV by himself, but because of and thanks to him, they saved him in the end? same way megumi saved satoru from the prison realm?

thinking about ichiji and shoko and megumi and tsumiki. ichiji who had to drive away from megumi to get nobara to the hospital, leaving him alone with sukuna. shoko watching megumi come back covered in blood and vomit, dead tired from a domain expansion. shoko watching sukuna bring megumi back to her, not knowing if its just a body. ichiji entering a death game for tsumiki, not letting anyone else do it. ichiji being the first adult they had to tell tsumiki and megumi were gone when 15 minutes ago they were formalizing getting them both to come home. ichiji and shoko having to tell satoru their kids are gone. ichiji telling satoru "you wish it was me that was dead" not just about nanami, but about tsumiki, too. shoko preparing tsumikis body. satoru trusting ichiji more than anyone because ichiji took care of his kids alongside him. shoko and ijichi and satoru waiting for megumi to bury tsumiki, because if anyone was making it out alive theyd all make sure it was megumi. ichiji and shoko watching megumi bleed again and again over the years knowing there was nothing they could do to stop it, because hes satorus boy over and before anything.
