Why Corazon Loved Law so Much: Analysis
I know that I’ve gotten into this in some of my previous analyses, but I figured that this topic warranted further investigation. After some heavy, deliberative thought on the matter, I have concluded that one of the main reasons why he loves Law so much is simply because… well, because Law loved him.
And, for the sake of both expediency and comprehensibility, I have decided to divide my analysis into two parts: What the canon evidence shows and what we can interpret from it:
What the Canon Manga Tells Us for Absolute Certain:
1. Donquixote Corazon believed that his sole purpose in life, as a younger brother, was to limit his brother’s evil deeds.
2. Donquixote Corazon believed that there was a high, likely possibility that Trafalgar Law would forget about him, despite everything he’s done for him.
3. Vice-Admiral Tsuru, who’s frequently hailed as the “Great Tactician” Tsuru, did not know of Donquixote Corazon’s involvement with the Donquixote Family as an undercover operative.
4. Fleet Admiral Sengoku prevented Vice-Admiral Garp from killing Admiral Akainu in order to exact vengeance for him murdering his grandson.
5. Trafalgar Law apparently views his main, or one of his main, purposes in life to be to accomplish Donquixote Corazon’s goal. Also, he became so enraged at the notion of Corazon’s death being petty that his rage quite possibly caused all the nearby structures in his room to dismantle and disintegrate.
6. (Won’t do one for the sixth image, since it relies heavily on analysis rather than anything stated explicitly)
What We Can Interpret from This:
1. Donquixote Corazon had very little self-worth and felt unloved and that it was largely due to social isolation and the “justice over all” mindset: Donquixote Corazon, as a human being, had very little self esteem and considered his own life to be largely unimportant. Apparently, he deems the only value he had as a living being was to help other people, and that his own life meant practically nothing. This mindset largely manifested itself in his own declaration that his main purpose in life was to limit his brother’s, who, frankly, is a genocidal, slave-trading sociopath, destructive and evil deeds. He decided from a young age that he himself was completely and utterly unimportant as a living being, and that he meant little to anyone, and that, as a result, he should dedicate his life to helping others with a complete disregard to himself.
This mindset was probably heavily reinforced by Sengoku. Ever since Corazon was a child, it is extremely likely that Sengoku kept Corazon socially isolated in the Marines, both for protection (after all, we’ve seen that the common people, who also heavily populate the Marines, don’t really like the Celestial Dragons) and, possibly, to increase his effectiveness as an espionage agent (after all, if nobody knows who you are, you have a much better chance of being a good spy). This notion is supported by the fact that, despite being in an undercover mission, Tsuru, who is considered the Great Tactician, had no idea that Corazon was on this mission. It’s quite likely that she didn’t even know who Corazon was. Granted, apparently Garp knew who Corazon was, but it’s highly likely that, in vein of Luffy, he stumbled upon Corazon by complete accident and was possibly the only person besides Sengoku who knew of his existence in the Marines.
Consequently, because of his social isolation, where he most likely only saw Sengoku on a regular basis, it’s quite possible that Sengoku’s belief system further strengthened Corazon’s lack of self worth. After all, while it’s quite probable that Sengoku dearly loved Corazon (as evidenced by him keeping a photo of his adopted son in his drawer for no reason and his extreme vehemence towards Doflamingo in the Warlords meeting), it is most likely that he valued justice and the common good over Corazon. This is the same man who ordered the genocide of Ohara and prevented Garp from avenging his grandson, after all. So it’s very likely that he encouraged Corazon to always value the good of the people over himself, which is evidenced in the fact that he allowed Corazon to embark on his dangerous mission in the first place.
And Sengoku probably knew this, he probably knew that it was quite probable that he was sending Corazon on a death mission, and he probably knew this for a very long time, ever since Corazon was a child even, perhaps. So it’s quite likely that, in order to prevent himself from completely breaking down if Corazon ever died, that he distanced himself from Corazon. This could’ve led to Corazon becoming even more socially isolated and, as a result, contributing to his belief that, besides for his capability of helping others, that he was largely worthless. Which probably also led to Corazon feeling unloved.
(Which was also compounded by the fact that when his betrayal was discovered, he was mercilessly beaten by people who valued Doflamingo over him to the extent that they didn’t show an ounce of regret over having to kill him despite living many years of their lives together, shot in the chest instead of his head by his own brother and given no parting words so that he would die in pain and agony, and wasn’t even given a burial by his “family”, despite the fact that with Pica it would’ve only taken a minute to do so. No. Instead, they just mercilessly beat him, shot him in such a way to cause him pain, and then instead of burying him, they used that time instead to steal away the treasure chest he was using as a pillow to die cold and alone in the snow. No wonder Corazon felt so worthless and unloved.)
2. Corazon felt like even though he was worthless, he at least wanted law to remember him after he died: His lack of self-worth is evidenced in the second image where he believed that, despite everything that he has done for Law’s sake, despite the fact that he was about to die for Law’s sake, that there’s an extremely likely chance that he is so worthless that Law would simply forget about him. Corazon’s even begging for Law to remember him, because even though he feels like he’s worthless, he at least wants to be remembered by his most cherished person.
3. Law was the only person who deeply loved Corazon enough to value him over other people: As stated in number one above, Corazon probably felt largely unloved and worthless. But… he did feel loved by one person.
He felt loved by Law. Believing that no one would love him or value him, it probably came across as quite a shock to Corazon to be so dearly loved by Law. It probably felt absolutely wonderful to Corazon to be finally loved by somebody. One of Law’s main characteristics is that when he loves, he loves deeply. So for a man like Corazon, being loved so dearly that he would be valued over other people was probably completely foreign, almost incomprehensible, and so utterly wonderful. For the first time in his life, he probably felt validated as a human being.
And, in a synergetic cycle, because Law loved him so much, it likewise fueled Corazon’s love for Law even more. It caused Corazon to love Law so much that he not only abandoned his mission against Doflamingo, which he himself stated was his life’s only purpose, but to abandon Sengoku and the Marines as well, and to essentially declare that he was willing to be the enemy of the whole world for Law’s sake. (After all, by stealing the Ope Ope no Mi, he was making himself an enemy of his brother, who practically controls the entire underworld, and of the Marines, which essentially does make him an enemy of the entire world)
4. Law’s Love Freed Corazon: When Corazon spoke his famous line, “He is free!”, he wasn’t only talking about Law. While he did free Law from the shackles of his illness and of being slavishly devoted to Doflamingo his entire life, he also freed himself. Because of Law’s love, Corazon was finally able to develop his own sense of self-worth, and he actually even began to develop his own hopes and dreams that, for the first time, weren’t mainly for the common good, but for himself. Law’s love freed him from his belief that his only purpose in life was to stop Doflamingo. Law’s love freed him from the belief that he was only a tool of justice. And ultimately, Law’s love freed Corazon from the belief that he himself was worthless. Law’s love inspired Corazon not only to dedicate his life to helping others, but to help himself as well.
And that is why Corazon and Law’s relationship is so goddamn important to me.
Notes:
1. This is not meant to be hating on Doflamingo or the Donquixote Family in any way. Doflamingo is one of my top three favorite characters of One Piece, and I absolutely adore the Donquixote Family to bits. This is a mere character analysis and exploration not meant to hate on any characters in any way. (Sorry, I just felt the need to clarify this since the hate mail I got was simply too much last time)
2. This is not meant to hate on Sengoku either, for that matter.
3. Three of the images were images from the translation that Amaitsumi posted, since, frankly, I trust their manga translations over those of anybody else, pretty much. So credit goes to them!

jujutsu kaisen episode 29 - premature death
one time a casual hockey fan tried to convey this experience to me from the other side as: "it's like... okay, imagine that you like donuts, and you meet a guy who also likes donuts, and you're like, hey, cool, we both like donuts! but this guy... he built his house out of donuts"
so now when I trip into a new fandom I'm like "oh shit I'm building this house out of donuts"
