I wake to you everywhere. yet, you are not here.
Reach (Nayyirah Waheed)
"A mission? I didn’t get any word of that…" He trailed off there, glancing down at the paperwork. It didn’t take long to go through a few of the sheets and look back towards his subordinate. "Do you honestly expect me to believe this is all your work, Nishimura?"
Crap. Crap, crap, crap.
There was no way in hell he could explain this. Not without angering Hitsugaya in the process. Still, he had to try because what other choice did he have.
"...N-No?" Think, Nishimura. Think! "I was just... It's just..." Crap. "--I'm so sorry, Taichou."

It had been a quiet set of funerals. Not for lack of mourning but for lack of mourners. War does that. It’s hard to mourn someone when you’re in a coffin right next to them.
The office was quiet afterwards too. She did her paperwork with silent diligence, as if not having Captain around to remind her to keep her nose down was his most effective technique yet. Lots of paperwork. Lots of deaths. Lots of tears left uncried, because there simply was not enough time.
It was time to move forward, though she hated it. She’d never been good at it. Yet it seemed to happen so often that she wondered if she was cursed. Or something.
Not that she actually believed that. If she did, she’d blame herself for the death that surrounded her. Her and her squad. First it was Captain Shiba, and now… and now…
"Jun." She was there tapping at his office door. She had the barest inkling of an idea, and though she didn’t know her subordinate particularly well, perhaps they could both benefit from an agreement. "I need your help with something."
Their silent grief was what hit him the most, faces twisted in all-too familiar pain. They were solders first, shinigami first, members of the Tenth division first and they were trying to act according to that, Jun knew. It was why he chose to look away every time even a fraction of that sorrow slipped past their shaky facade. It was why he chose not to ask, not to pry, not to offer anything other than his quiet support.
But they've lost so much, so many and the eerie silence that swallowed their hallways almost undid him. Because the Tenth was many things, but never silent. Some sort of commotion was always present, either provoked by their fukutaichou or some other division member that eagerly followed her lead.
Their work schedule hardly wavered, however. And Jun understood why. It was their meek attempt to honor their fallen first-in-command; their desperate need to show Hitsugaya-taichou that his stern teachings did not go to waste. Jun tried to do the same.
"Fuku--" The title -- her former title -- nearly slipped out and the red-head shifted in his seat, clearly surprised by the sudden visit. He didn't talk to her properly for so long. Not since... "Please, come in, Matsumoto-taichou."
She had spent the better part of her childhood having someone doing her hair. Her parents spending the better part of that time styling it differently—her mother was much better at it then her father, not that anyone admitted that to his face— and then more recently, she had Rangiku and Hisagi to help her tame her wild golden locks.
Long hair was such a pain sometimes, and she was grateful for everyone that volunteered to help her with it.
To that, she gave a sheepish giggle. “Well, to be honest, I always forget to tie it back before I go train. I always mean too, but then I get there and realize it when its too late. I’m so used to leaving it down.”
It wasn’t always a bother, but sometimes it was, blowing into her face and obscuring her vision. And with her zanpakuto, seeing what she was doing was key. She had to start bringing hair ties with her everywhere.
"Aww, I like your hair though. If you want, I can try braiding it for you!"
His own hair was always tied up in a way, either pulled up with a bandana or with a simple ribbon, and he got used to it so much that he barely (if ever) left his home with his hair down. But he understood her concerns, knew very well how it felt to fight with a blind spot and learn to survive despite it.
"It takes some practice, I know. Try carrying a hair tie with you all the time, even if you're not using it. Maybe try making it into a bracelet or something, until it becomes natural to have it on you all the time."
A small laugh escaped him when he heard her suggestion, only then realizing how silly the two might seem to a random passerby -- doing each other's hair in the middle of the day. "I'm not really sure a braid would suit me, but thank you Aden-san." Another laugh before, "And my hair might look interesting, but it's actually a whole different story when you try doing something with it."
I guess this is what it’s supposed to feel like No, we don’t talk, no, we don’t talk, we don’t talk anymore. I guess this is what it’s supposed to sound like The universe, the universe, universe is torn.
I don’t want to live without you I can’t live without you half the day I don’t want to live without you And put life off for another day

He didn’t need to worry, she was sure he was doing a great job. She couldn’t exactly see how it looked, but he wasn’t tugging on her hair too hard, so she counted that towards doing a good job. There wasn’t really too many ways he could mess it up anyway, braids were kind of easy to do when it was someone else’s hair.
"Well, I only consider cutting it because it might get in the way during a battle. Plus, the static is murder on it during the winter. But I mean…Rangiku keeps her hair kind of long and she kicks ass and looks great doing it so…maybe its not necessary to cut it short?
I probably should get into the habit of tying it up into ponytails though. That might help.”
He was glad, maybe even a little proud, to see his fingers slipping through her hair, making (he hoped) a neatly styled braid. Every loose hair that tried to evade him, ruining the hairstyle, was smoothed down carefully, patiently. He had some experience with this, sure. But he never worked on anyone's hair other than his own. It wasn't as difficult as he thought it would be. And it was kind of fun, too.
"Well if that's the only reason, then I can only hope you'll leave it long." A small laugh escaped him, though he was rather surprised to hear her say something like that. She was actually considering cutting her hair only to better operate in battle and Jun could do nothing but be amazed at her level of determination to be a more efficient fighter. It was a small thing, sure. But it was a detail she actually took notice of and that showed how much she actually cared about her calling. "If it doesn't bother you already while you train, of course." A piece of hair wasn't worth her life, after all. "I keep mine in a ponytail, too. Most of the time. Though, I'm afraid my hair isn't as obedient and as soft as yours is, so it frequently gets loose."

Sometimes when I close my eyes I pretend I'm alright But it's never enough
As far back as she could remember, her hair had always been pretty long. She just could never really bring herself to cut it very short, probably because it would be a drastic change. Plus she king of enjoyed letting others play with it.
"Thank you~ So you think I should keep it this length then?"
"Ah, well..." Rakes his fingers though his own hair, careful not to untie his ponytail, before offering her an answer and shifting his attention back to her blond tresses once more. He is braiding her hair rather slowly, fearing he'll somehow mess it up if he's not careful enough and just end up hurting her. "I think you should do what you want. I mean, if you're not comfortable with it, then yes, you should probably cut it, but--"
"I think this length really suits you." Pauses for a moment, before, "Perhaps you should try wearing it in a ponytail or something similar, if it's a bother to have it down this way. B-But again, you should do whatever makes you feel more comfortable."
" Nishimura! Decided to report in, have you? "
"T-Taichou—" Tries really, really hard not to seem too nervous and gives a terse bow. "Am I late? I apologize. Something came up and— I’m sorry, it won’t happen again."

Sheepishly volunteers to braid her hair. He’d cut it too, if she so wished, but he is not very good with scissors.
Still on the fence about the idea of cutting her hair. But totally takes him up on his offer of braiding.
Excellent, for he is rather fascinated with her hair. And how she managed to keep it so long and soft, considering what they did for a living. "--Your hair is really beautiful, Aden-san."
