Raid count: 14
8 hours remaining
11th raid was scattered deserters, quickly dispatched with just the ghouls without worrying anyone
12th raid was neanderthals again, with a two pronged approach. The group at the north gate was easily dealt with, but did down Oliver, meaning that the mechanoids were activated to deal with the delayed southern group.
13th raid was another group of mechs from the water - simple enough using the ghouls to take out the apocriton pair in a staggered manner to keep the mechs stunned, then wrap up the centipedes. However, during the cleanup, a deserter raid (#14) dropped in... right into the active battlefield. Needless to say they did not last long, but Raith did loose a leg in the process (not to worry, it was immediately restored by Scarecrow's unnatural healing). Aftermath:
Aivia has contracted organ decay in her heart! It's more of a long-term issue, but still concerning - I'm sure Val will come up with a suitable replacement before long.
Raid count: 10
Days remaining: 3.7
First we got hit with a waster raid, very standard, pretty easily handled.
Next came the Neanderthals, some time later, attacking by the north gate, and as soon as the fighting had begun there, a number of Yttakin pirates from Hysburg landed drop pods far off in the center of the base. Val headed over and activated her mechs, and a contingent of ghouls split off to help. The defense at the north gate went well, with ghouls holding a choke point and Oliver berserk pulsing to turn the neanderthals against each other while others shot through the doorway, and Val's group managed to defeat the pirates, though not before they started several fires and inflicted significant damage on the kitchen and attached fridge (it's okay, there's a much larger second fridge under the mountain). Everyone got through with only minor injuries! (aside from the paramedic mech, who got trampled but will be repaired and restored to full function in the gestator cylinder)
Let's install archotech arm with mama!
Oh boy strap in
Raid count: 7
Firstly, the pigskin pig union faction attempted a siege to the north of the map while several colonists were finishing up a death refusal ritual for Quieter, but were taken out by humans, mechs, and ghouls before they could set up mortars. 5/8 ghouls died, but were promptly resurrected with the serum (we love expendable melee blockers!)
Shortly thereafter, Yttakin pirates attempted another siege above the north caves, but were cut down by shamblers, ghouls, and Oliver's berserk pulse psycasts. Among their number was the wife of Hercules, the same captured sanguophage whose son attacked with deserters earlier! We'll be releasing all the prisoners before the ship takes off, naturally (Raith doesn't care but Val and the others insisted).
While that raid was still ongoing, a group of deserters dropped in - supposedly they're targeting Oliver, but they must've gotten the coordinates wrong for their drop pods, because they all crashed through the roof of Pumpkin's bedroom. Pumpkin, unarmed, hid in a corner behind rubble, and as the enemies started to dig through to get to her, Val heard the noise and rushed towards it, turning herself invisible and bludgeoning several deserters to death with her minigun in the close quarters before any other help could arrive.
By the time Val made it to Pumpkin, not knowing what she'd fine, the raiders had breached the wall, and opened fire, destroying her arm before having their heads bashed in by Val.
I guess Val and her daughter have another thing in common now?

After a pair of raids from The Dragonfly Men, a pirate Junker faction, we were raided by imperial deserters, including the son of one of Raith's captive sanguophages. Oliver spared, him, making good use of his void terror ability, and we cleaned up the rest quick!
Killed the revenant we've had captive for years to turn into vertebrae so scarecrow can have invisibility! I don't think it can come on the ship anyway
Done! Also gave Vivienne 2 an eye and an arm for her injuries
Killed the revenant we've had captive for years to turn into vertebrae so scarecrow can have invisibility! I don't think it can come on the ship anyway
First ship raid and boy was it eventful! A large number of centipedes, an apocriton, centurion, etc, etc burst out of the water to attack! As we were engaging the first wave, a number of imperial deserters in disguise broke off from an allied bulk goods trader to attack (but were quickly put down by the Viviennes. The mechs were deployed to hold off the second mechanoid wave to the south, and once the first was handled the defenders headed down to take up positions by the south gate. However, in the ensuing firefight, Quieter was shot and killed by change lances destroying her entire torso!
Fortunately, everyone has built up at least one death refusal. She rose from the ground, repaired by the mechanites, picked up her rifle, and began to return the fire that killed her. Otherwise, everyone is okay save for a few minor injuries, but Quieter has been left with a scar, as the damage was too extensive for the mechanites to repair on their own.
So it begins.
The royals are gone, and Vivienne 2's persona plasmasword has arrived! The only trait is fast mover, but now she can keep up with her fellow Vivienne!
One last wrap-up post for the character intros! Featuring: Ghouls, Mechanoids, Prisoners, Shamblers, and Animals.
These are Subjects I-VIII, named by the ever-creative Raith. They are the colony's ghouls, and do most of the melee-blocking and front-line fighting. Each bears a standardized array of bionics, but they all may look familiar - they were all once Obelisk duplicates of Pork. The first was accidental, many years ago when the Obelisk first landed. Raith, never one to pass up an opportunity, seized his chance to take advantage. Dr. Raith was able to persuade both Porks to allow the duplicate to undergo the ghoul-creation process, "for the good of the colony," taking advantage of the confusing situation and Pork's protectiveness. Not letting up, Raith pressed his advantage and pressured Pork into allowing him to engineer and take seven more duplicates - each becoming a dead eyed, seemingly unintelligent killing machine.
These are a handful of the mechanoids controlled by Val - they slumber, dormant in the fields, and the colony's children spent many a day climbing the enormous boulder-like metal centipedes. They rarely see actual use, since the colony's other defenders are typically more than sufficient to protect it from the average raid, but provide an ironclad safety net for the group to fall back on - no doubt they'll see some action in the chaos of the reactor startup sequence.
This is the prison where the colony sends captured raiders, within the bowels of Raith's lab - his primary goal for them is gene extraction, and he has collected a number of fellow sanguophages of several varieties over the years, who are simply left deathresting.
Another backup defense is the SKELETON PITS! They're two giant piles of large animal corpses kept around deadlife shells to be released in case of emergency. I don't use these much, mainly because of the cleanup and the lag (though I'm curious to see how 1.6's performance improvements impact the viability of this strategy in that regard). The first one is actually in a natural cave that used to be the biggest hole in our defenses, but now is an inescapable skeleton death trap, and the second is just an emergency reserve.
Lastly, a quick overview of the animals! We have an ever-growing population of Thrumbos in the colony after going through the effort to tame a breeding pair.
I also keep a large pen of various animals (just outside the aforementioned caves) for caravans, fabric, and meat, as well as the horse the original three colonists crashlanded with all those years ago.
This is "The Tall" - Aivia's daughter (with a previous partner long before joining the colony), she was presumably abandoned by her mother, after which she was pulled into a militia as a child and wound up working as a mercenary as an adult. She crashlanded outside the colony, heavily injured, some years after Aivia joined. Raith patched her up and surgically sealed her into an advanced drone-controller warcasket exoskeleton/mech suit so she could continue to fight - but as a result she can do little else. Aivia cares little for her, and she has become a secondary subject/victim of Raith's weapons program, taking luciferium and becoming genetically modified.
This is Rowan, the youngest member of the colony. He's Val and Hickory's child through advanced IVF, and is a hybrid between Baseliner and Poluxkin genes. He's only 8, so there's not a ton to say about him yet, but he enjoys spending time with animals and likes to tag along with Val while she crafts various things!
This is Labinia, one of the more recent additions to the colony. An imperial deserter, she came here to assassinate Oliver, as he has a high imperial title. Her assassination attempt failed, however, and she was captured and imprisoned. Oliver took to talking to her, and given time was able to convince her to join and guard him - through telling her of his true intentions, to usurp the empire and reign as a benevolent void-touched emissary. Nobody else knows exactly what he said to her, but she is fiercely loyal and will protect him with her life. She has a mecha bionic arm, presumably the result of some old pre-joining injury, and retains her death acidifier from her time in the imperial guard.
This is Pumpkin, a child of the colony with a much healthier and happier upbringing. She was found as a child, dead and skeletal in the Warped Obelisk maze by Val, who brought her home and persuaded Oliver to attempt a psychic ritual to resurrect her (this was long before he was void-touched, but was still psychic). The ritual resulted in the loss of Oliver's finger, a wound that stays with him to this day, but brought the child back to life, whereupon Val and Hickory adopted her and raised her as their own. A Gauranlenkin, Pumpkin is incredibly skilled in plants already by the age of 16, but is always excited to learn about any number of new things. Lately she's been spending a lot of time tending to the Gauranlen tree she planted outside, and hatching and cultivating Dryads from it!
