So the comment sections on Netta’s eurovision win on YouTube and various world media as well as here on tumblr show a definite backlash. The ironic thing is the “justification” for this backlash at her winning is riddled with antisemitism, misogynism, fat-shaming, conspiracies about Israel using her win for political gain in the wake of what happened with Syria and Iran, reiterating some sour-puss complaint that “israel isn’t even a part of Europe therefore it shouldn’t even be in the contest” (i.e. eurocentrism), and all types of bullshit. But yes. Her “cultural appropriation” of Japanese and Chinese symbols to her performance and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the problem. When people who view themselves as “politically intelligent” don’t show any intelligence at all there’s a huuuge problem. And in any case, if y’all hate her or the song so much, how come it won?
