Hazel eyes shifted towards the other, taking in the distant expression and how their line of focus appeared glazed underneath the veil of a dark night. “Wherever your mind’s at must sure as hell beat this current location,” she mused, fingertips coiling around the neck of a plastic bottle. “Look, if you need some rest, I don’t mind waiting out here on my own.”
There had to be more survivors.
“Huh?” Derek tried to shake away the images. The flames, the collapsing buildings, and that resounding boom that shook the earth. You aren’t there, he reminded himself. You’re outside, you’re here and alive. “I’m fine. It’s nothing. I can handle it.” A pause as he ran his hands over his face to try and get his eyes to corporate. “Wouldn’t want you out here by yourself anyway.”
