      he nudged back, some effort used to set her balance off. faux-offense was easy to play at. “close to the best? prentiss, i did not go all this way just to be close to best.” and falling back into rapport was simple, not even years of radio silence could’ve changed the fact; when the only times he’s heard of her was through second-sourced conversations and neither acted on any urge to reach out. “y’know. it’s still impossible to keep secrets around baby girl.”

       he didn’t miss her backtracking of thought. he didn’t doubt she bit back a scathing tongue. reading emily prentiss was close to second nature this far in their relationship; partners for almost a decade. learning the details and what was hidden was inevitable. the years missing between then and now hardly mattered--- “fine. you’re lucky i like you so much, prentiss. brought you your favorite.” he could never stay frustrated at her for too long.
