BACKGROUND
From the moment she first picked up a crayon, Derin saw the world in color, and her early years were marked by a relentless passion for creativity. She filled every corner with vivid, expressive drawings—even the walls, which earned her more than a few scoldings. Yet, her artistic inclinations set her apart. Where her sister Dilan blossomed under their father’s disciplined guidance, flourishing into a graceful dancer, Derin rebelled against every constraint. Dance lessons were a disaster—she stomped through every class, pleading to go home. Eventually, her parents conceded, perhaps knowing that it was a battle they’d lose. It was one of the only victories Derin would ever get.
That was one of the few fights she actually won with her parents. Her father had a picture-perfect image of what his daughters should be, and she shattered it at every turn. Teenage Derin would sneak out with Dilan, experiment with drugs, party, and bring girls home under the guise of “sleepovers” until her parents caught her in a not-so-innocent moment. Where Dilan could bat her big brown eyes and melt her parents’ hearts, Derin was the one they constantly had to keep an eye on.
When it came time for college, Derin seized the chance to break free. She headed to UCLA to study fine arts—anything to get as far away from her family as possible. Life in LA was a dream: she poured herself into her art, spent her nights exploring the city, and did it all on her father’s Amex. But it wasn’t long before he called her back home, claiming it was time to “grow up” and help the family. She struck a deal to finish school, though it meant using her artistic skills to aid in their gang’s schemes. Her brief escape ended there, but she got what she could out of it. After college, Derin got a taste of freedom again, traveling to Europe, painting murals in the streets, and studying at every museum she could sneak into. It felt like she could finally live her life on her terms, if only for a while.
Growing up, her relationship with her sister was close, her built-in best friend. So close in age, Derin and Dilan had always been there for each other, sharing secrets and sneaking out together. Dilan was more of a free spirit, easygoing to what her parents said, still facing the same pressure. One day, in a moment of frustration, not wanting to have to hear her sister complain, she’d ignored Dilan’s calls, not knowing her mother was now gone.
While home she was pushed into working for the gang, not given a choice, but Dilan was finally being left alone, a free pass. When she started to revolt she was shackled into an arranged marriage to a horrid man. After a few weeks, she saw the red flags. Not wanting to be chained to a wife-beater for the rest of her life, she had him killed. Knowing that his daughter would be hard to tame, he called in the big guns, forcing her to marry his right-hand man's son. That guilt never really went away from missing time with her mom, and neither did her anger at how differently they’d been treated once everything went down. Derin was fated into a lovely marriage and to be controlled at every moment and Dilan was free to dance and do as she pleased.
Reyan Reis was every girl's dream, but Derin's. He was big strong, sexy but a total arrogant asshole - in her opinion. He had simple directions to control his new wife. The wedding was rushed and she was shackled to a man she could not stand out of spite. Derin was able to get some remnants of her old life back after a year and a half. Taking her hubby with her, she set off to travel the world gathering expensive pieces for the gang to obtain. Being a great forger herself she often worked on perfect copies to switch out while they got away with the real piece.
Married life did not treat her well. Their marriage was in name only. Reyan took specific orders from her father and forced Derin to follow the rules. This oppressive lifestyle had her resenting the freedom her sister escaped with and overall resenting her. Their relationship is now strained as a result. With war upon the society and orders by Daddy, Derin has now landed at home, forced back into the light of the father she hates and the siblings she avoids all while having to pretend she is happily in love with the man she wants to murder (for no good reason.) But while she may be pretending to live the grandest life ever, the oppressive hold has only taught her how to be sneaky and more devious than ever while carrying the largest chip on her shoulder she could manage.
