I painted this city of the future. Going for a retro mid-century vibe.
I had a weird dream last night, so I made this sketch/animation to remember it.
To The Hall of Light - Derrick Chow
Activist Knowledge - Derrick Chow
My latest illustration for Briarpatch Magazine. Pick it up to read Aziz Choudry's article about the history of activist movements and the way we shape narratives about them.
Come Play With Me - Derrick Chow
I illustrated Margaret Hillert’s delightful book, ‘Come Play With Me’. It’s in stores now!
Celebration - Derrick Chow
My cover illustration for the new issue of Ricepaper Magazine.
Closing Time - Derrick Chow
Check out this comic I created for the new issue of Ricepaper Magazine.
Commodity Culture - Derrick Chow
An illustration I created for Briarpatch Magazine to accompany an article about commodity culture, capitalism, and the environment.
The Mysterious Townhouse - Derrick Chow
Bright windows appear in a dark forest clearing
A short comic I made in memory of my father.
Dear Prime Minister - Derrick Chow
A cover illustration I did for the Literary Review of Canada
Crash Landing - Derrick Chow
This is my first foray into creating miniature dioramas and photographing them.
Dual Evils - Derrick Chow
My illustration for the new issue of Briarpatch Magazine. Pick up the March/April issue to read Sara Tatelman's article about the exploitation of journalism interns.
The Machete - Derrick Chow
I was asked by This Magazine to illustrate 'Coconut Dreams', a short story by Trevor Corkum.
It's a story that's tense, mysterious, and filled with teenage longing. It was as much a pleasure to read as it was to illustrate.
Pick up the January/February issue of This Magazine to read it and to see my illustration.
Derrick Chow - Urban Cave
This is a piece for an upcoming group art show. The theme of the show is 'secrets'.
There is a sort of hidden psychology in disused buildings and forgotten structures. The fun part is teasing it out.
Board Game Culture - Derrick Chow
"[Playing board games] might be understood as a challenge to the logic of 24-hour productivity and accountability." - Tonya Davidson I was commissioned to create this to accompany an article in Briarpatch Magazine by Tonya Davidson.
She asserts that board game culture is both a subversive and social act. And so, I designed an image that is both playful and vaguely menacing.
Rolling Along - Derrick Chow
A cover illustration for the year in review issue of Halifax Magazine. What better way to sum up all the future-thinking construction initiatives that Halifax has planned for the new year than by depicting the city as a shiny, well-oiled machine?
