((Of course, he had no way of knowing at that point that he had been responsible. The guard stayed long enough to say something along the lines of “your mother is dead,” and that’s it. He ostensibly doesn’t know the circumstances surrounding her death, that Kurse had killed her, or anything else… just that she’s dead.
The guilt over that information can come later. For the moment, though… that she died, and that his last words to her were “you are not [my mother]” is enough to send him into the shame spiral you see here.))
//THANK. YOU.
Oh, puh-leeze!!!! Are we to believe that Asgard’s high security dungeons only have two stairs, the one on the right, which leads to certain freedom and the one on the left, which leads directly to the Queen?!! Are we also to believe that Kurse, who had just refused to open Loki’s cage, would listen to any advise Loki had to give him? Are we also to believe that Loki’s remark to Kurse, after Kurse had refused to open his cage, was anything but flippant?!!
We don’t even know if Kurse really did take the stairs to the left or not. Neither does Loki. And even if he did, and even if he did so on Loki’s ‘advice’, are we seriously supposed to think that the only reason Kurse killed Frigga is because she just happened to be on his way out while he took a left turn at Albuquerque the stairs?!! Might the fact that Frigga was protecting Jane, and Malekith and oh, I dunno, Kurse himself, have anything to do with that?
Really, this scapegoating, where everything noxious, every action of every villain, every noxious action of the gleaming Aesir, everything which turns out bad, are heaped onto the head of Loki is getting rather tiresome.
Yeah. If I come across one more post declaring that Loki ‘got his mother killed’ or ‘destroyed Asgard’ with a straight face… Oy. At this point Loki could sneeze and someone would blame him for the next plague.
Yep. It’s like they’re grasping at some vague notion of causal responsibility (without fully considering whether or not it even logically fits the facts) in order to have an excuse to hang everything on Loki (because he’s a ‘villain’). But then they refuse to extend even the most basic consideration of how, if you’re going to go with causal responsibility at all here (for argument’s sake only), you’ve got a fuckload of stuff done by other people (‘heroes’) that also contributed at least as much, if not more, so how much are THEY guilty?
Leaving aside Malekith and Kurse as the ones who actually, you know, flew the actual fucking spaceship into the palace and actually stabbed Frigga, let’s look at, oh say Jane, Thor, and Odin, for starters. Oh and Bor for being a lying bastard too. Just for argument’s sake, because it’s all faintly ridiculous.
Ok, so way way back when, Bor is unsuccessful in his bid to completely exterminate another race, and a few really pissed off survivors hide to wait for their revenge. Bor can’t figure out how to destroy their elvish antimatter weapon, so he hides it (really piss-poor job of it too, IMHO), and then lies and tells everybody it was destroyed, ensuring that when it does reappear very few people will have the knowledge to realize what the dangers are. Millenia later, Jane goes poking around because weird shit is happening and she wonders if Thor has something to do with it, and (naturally having no way to know the risks or what the hell she’s getting herself into) inadvertently ends up with the equivalent of enough antimatter to wipe out the nine realms running through her veins. In the process she wakes up those really pissed off genocide survivors, but of course can’t know that.
Thor meanwhile has been acting like Harry with the Marauder’s Map and is using Heimdall to secretly spy on his not-girlfriend (nothing creepy there, nope), and immediately rushes down there when Heimdall loses sight of her. Weird shit happens that Thor doesn’t know how to interpret, so he brings a (clearly dangerous) Jane back to Asgard, being concerned about her as he is. Odin finds out and tells them ‘oops, daddy lied and said the Evil Empire Elves and their elvish antimatter were destroyed, but the antimatter clearly wasn’t.’ And then goes on to tell them not to try anything with it or take it out of Jane (though it’s killing her), keeps Jane in Asgard, and sets up no apparent additional security precautions whatsoever. Despite it being the goddamn convergence and despite the fact that they just found the shit Malekith tried to destroy the nine realms with last convergence, proving that Bor’s account of total victory was bullshit. I mean, you’d think that might make someone as canny as Odin’s supposed to be wonder if anyone/anything else might have survived that battle, just on the off chance….
(Oh, ok, on the subject of causal responsibility, add in the guards that brought Kurse into Asgard, Heimdall who didn’t see Kurse for what he was, and Frigga who chose to take Jane into her protection. Might as well count Darcy for telling Jane about the portal in the first place, too. And Richard, for telling her to go instead of staying for lunch. And and and….)
Meanwhile Malekith and Kurse do as you’d expect them to and use their magical aether-tracking abilities to locate their superweapon in Asgard (though apparently its range is off by a couple of meters, or Frigga’s trick wouldn’t have done shit). They, predictably, attack, killing a lot of guards and Frigga in the process.
During everything that happens Loki - who has less information than anyone else in Asgard about what’s been happening - makes one ambiguous remark to Kurse in a situation in which neither has any reason to help/trust the other, neither even knows the other or what the other’s long-range plans are, and we aren’t shown if or how that remark actually influenced Kurse’s actions at all. (Especially given that Kurse went right for the shield generator first, which had to have been the entire POINT of having him sneak in at all - a plan Loki could not have known about.) Out of all that, obviously LOKI is the only one besides Kurse and Malekith themselves who had any actual impact upon events of a kind that would give him moral responsibility for what happened. I mean it’s OBVIOUS, right? Clearly, with that one ambiguous, possibly-pointless remark which was his entire contribution to the situation, Loki made Frigga’s death and the downfall of Asgard happen all by himself (given that Kurse and Malekith were just always going to do what they did, like automatons, or something). So clearly it’s all his fault and his fault alone. Right?Right?Or maybe that argument is utterly fucking ridiculous, as any bare-bones consideration of the facts would illustrate. The unstated and unquestioned assumption that causal responsibility can seamlessly and instantly be equated with moral responsibility is itself suspect, but what makes it even more fucking absurd is the fact that this argument only gets brought out in service of pinning things on one particular character, regardless of how many other characters’ actions contributed - often far more directly and far more indisputably - to the unfolding of events. It’s bullshit logic in the service of a bullshit ideology of double standards and a bullshit moral game that was rigged from the beginning.I for one am not. fucking. playing.
Apparently a lot of fandom and the Loki show itself believe that Frigga’s death was Loki’s fault. I decided to rewatch tdw in case I’ve missed sth and it was a good decision since yes I have had forgotten some details.
Let’s see what the movie shows us.
The Dark Elves could sense the Aether activating. That was what woke them up. And they also knew its location and the fact that it was on Asgard and they knew the convergence was close.
“You will become darkness. Cursed to this existence until it consumes you. Until then no power our enemies possess can stop you.” Malekith to Algrim
The Kursed was indestructible by any power the Asgardians possess. None of the weapons, Elvish or Asgardian work on him not even Mjolnir(only their own elvish made weapon that Loki cleverly activated destroyed him). He could bring down the protective shields on prisons which was built of the same material that could protect the palace. So no matter how many guards was on his way he could still reach his intended location.
The reason Algrim could get into Asgard in the first place was because of Asgard’s incredibly weak and stupid security system that relied on 1 (one) guy who couldn’t see Dark Elves or Jane(or probably anyone who uses infinity stones, or simple invisibility tech or magic).
The reason Algrim could get into the dungeons under Asgard’s palace with no one noticing he is carrying a weapon inside a wound in his body, is again the same weak security system and an apparent indifference toward their prisoner’s health.
Speaking of the prisons, where are the dungeons located?
Here, deep under the ground. And there are stairs.
Oh look another set of stairs.
Which leads to the only way in or out of the dungeon.
A set of stairs that from the pov of anyone who wants to get out, they should turn left. Look at the only one direction that the guards running in to join the fight.
Anyway stairs, stairs everywhere. Remember these because we’re coming back to them.
Now let’s see the events from Loki’s point of view. There’s an explosion in one of the cells. A creature Loki has never seen before(or probably didn’t even know existed), is bringing down the cells’ shields one by one without any effort(sth as far as we know Loki can’t do himself) and Asgardian weapons don’t work on him and he can kill anyone with a simple touch. He is definitely a threat. The kind of threat Loki’s been dealing with during his time with Thanos. So he goes for an intimidating posture. A look that says I am dangerous and a threat on a whole other level than these scavengers. A look that means trouble and Kursed understands it very well . Loki’s Asgardian looks and his different luxurious cell adds to his hesitation and suspicion in freeing Loki. And he doesn’t risk it.
It is at this point that Loki says “You might want to take the stairs to the left”. Alright which stairs? The stairs that are the only way out of the dungeons and Algrim should have turned left to get out no matter what?
“Maybe there was a secret door somewhere in the dungeon.”
Ok how? Look at the structure of dungeons. It’s a long tunnel above a deep empty space. There’s literally nothing there.
Or maybe Loki meant these stairs? Alright then where? Right or left?
And after that? and after that? Did what Loki said meant Kursed should have kept turning left on each set of stairs to reach the security room where the protective shield control was located? A room that is clearly located far from the dungeons on the ground level because you can see the light of the day.
Or Do you mean the room was located right at the left of dungeons’ door? And right beside Frigga’s chambers? That doesn’t make any sense. Let me remind you how massive that palace actually is.
“Maybe that was a path with less guards so Kursed could move around easier?”
No? He is leaving a trail of bodies in his path because no one is able to harm him. And most of the guards are either busy with the prisoners or defending the palace and city.
Moreover at that point, Loki had no idea that this is anything but a prison break. He had no idea that the palace was under attack because it hadn’t happened yet. There was no sound of impact or the building shaking. Not until after Kursed was long gone. So Loki didn’t even have any reason to send Kursed to that room so he can take down the shield.
The way I see it what Loki says to Kursed is an attempt to get free. Loki’s telling him that he knows the palace. That Loki can be an ally if Kursed frees him. At the same time he doesn’t give him any useful information.
Also notice that at first Loki is not worried and doesn’t care what’s happening around him. Not until he hears and feels the building is shaking. Not until he hears the guards saying that the throne is under attack. That’s when he stands and looks around and tries to listen to what’s happening.
(And I think part of that indifference in the beginning is because of the trust he has in Thor. That Thor wouldn’t let anything terrible happen to their mother. One of the many reasons their fight in the boat is heartbreaking. Loki accusing Thor of letting Frigga die. The brother who Loki always looked up to, failed. Thor telling Loki that he wasn’t even there. The brother he never thought would leave his side was now far away. It’s also their shared grief and guilt. Neither of them were there to prevent Frigga’s death.)
So how could Kursed find the room and Frigga’s chambers easily in that massive palace? The same way they knew where to find Asgardians and their prisoners to get into Asgard without Heimdall noticing. They were an ancient race. Older than Asgardians. They had better tech and weapons and quite possibly prior knowledge of inner working of Asgard. Moreover as I mentioned earlier they could sense the Aether. That’s how Malekith and Kursed found Frigga and Jane.
“But what if it was what the movie intended to portray? That it was Loki’s fault?”
Well in that case they should start watching their own movies and make what they intend to show, not asking the audience to accept sth that isn’t shown and doesn’t make any sense.
But even then, even if Loki gave Kursed any notable info, Frigga’s death still isn’t Loki’s fault. Loki’s involvement is just a cog in the wheel of a series of events that end up with that result. It’s the butterfly effect, not the cause and effect. Which is actually one of the main themes of the movie. The convergence. The nine realms separated but once in a while the borders between them thins and they align perfectly so whatever happens to one happen to all others. Just like how we are living individually but our choices can cause a chain of events that affects a lot of people. So at the end of the day we’re all connected. Like the convergence that connected the realms to each other.
#remember the part where thor is *with* frigga and jane, and sees a commotion on the other side of the city, so jumps out the window and flies over *to the dungeons* with mjolnir? #flies. over. to. the. dungeons. #away from frigga’s location. # because of the prison riot that he immediately, *immediately* assumes LOKI started. #despite it being the guards’ failure to properly search or examine the new prisoners before incarcerating them which *actually* caused the breakout. #well, i do.
