Watercolor artist Céline Chollet and her husband, Olivier, live in a 16th-century storybook Tudor.
The 500-year-old residence has so much character.
Though she loved the old oak beams that appeared in walls and ceilings throughout the home, using her fine arts expertise, her first order of business was to paint nearly every room—joists and all.
She used a combination of pastel greens, blues, grays, and beiges, giving the home a serene yet jovial atmosphere. “I love colors but I don’t like big contrasts,” Céline says.
A black piano was repainted using some of Céline’s favorite colors.
Céline bought the blue-and-white tiles behind the black Lacange range over several years, collecting them until she had enough to make a backsplash.
Wanting to restore the home to its original splendor, Céline and her husband began searching for period materials at flea markets and second-hand stores throughout the region. Perhaps their greatest show of dedication is seen in the kitchen.
A shelf in the guest room, is stocked with discarded science textbooks and materials found by Olivier in a school where he was a history teacher.
An 18th-century Dutch-style painting, found by Olivier at an antiques shop, is the dining room’s showpiece.
An experienced picture framer, Céline collects antique frames, which she stores in the non-working fireplace in her atelier.
Olivier began collecting flags when he was a child; some of them are displayed on the stairwell leading to the top of the house’s tower.
In the master bedroom, the cozy bed is a family heirloom, and the mirror above it was designed by Céline using an antique frame.
