dean winchester as owen grady, having a family of velociraptors, and learning their language and familial habits. being the alpha raptor. 

the novaks being the money behind jurassic park and the dinosaur dna testing etc. naomi novak wanting it for the money and not caring about the dinosaurs. her youngest son, castiel novak, being obsessed with every single dinosaur on the island and wanting them to be safe, happy, and healthy. 

castiel not believing they should ever open to the public because it would be too dangerous

castiel going to vet school and learning as much as he can so he can do his best to treat the dinosaurs when they’re ill or injured 

dean being a recluse and not really wanting to be around people, since people are crazy, and dinosaurs he understands. but dean also falling in love a little with the nerdy castiel, who just wants to study the dinosaurs and learn as much as he can about them. 

sam being dean’s little brother and coming to see him an the dinosaurs which he thinks are the best. sam wanting to be like dean, but dean doesn’t want sam to get hurt, so he never takes sam on the job. 

sam is allowed to go with castiel to see the herbivores up close while he’s tending to a sick brachiosaurus.  sam begging castiel to let him see a t-rex or a raptor. castiel insisting sam stay close, because he’s in charge of him, and it’s taken him a long time to gain dean’s trust and respect. 

sam begrudgingly staying by castiel’s side and learning so much and loving it

when they head back to the main park, castiel finally agrees to let sam see dean work with the raptors, but only if he stays up in the watch tower, so he can’t get hurt. so sam goes, really excited to see his big brother at work. 

castiel goes with him and watches dean, totally crushing on him, even though cas knows that the most important thing in dean’s life, besides sam, are blue, delta, charlie, and echo - his velociraptor children. 

after sam begs castiel to let him go to the ground floor, cas finally lets him, and they go down to watch dean from the ground, standing near the gate. dean is walking the raptors through an exercise where they keep their eyes on him, and cas is smitten with dean and the way he can make predators respect and obey his command. 

when dean is ready to head back inside, he feeds the raptors, and sends them off, stepping back through the gate with sam - he’s upset that sam is so close, but he’s also blushing as castiel beams at him, and compliments him on his intelligence and skills. 

it isn’t until later, when castiel is up on top of the gate, watching dean again as he’s leaving, when he has a slip and falls into the cage with the predators. dean sees cas and doesn’t think twice before rushing back in and putting himself between castiel and the raptors. 

castiel watches as dean saves his life, managing to get the raptors to back off and retreat back into their enclosure. he’s torn between being terrified and aroused. 

castiel and dean going on a date and dean listening to castiel go on and on about scientific names and mating rituals between species. castiel listening to dean talk about his raptor squad like he’s talking about his kids.

Dean leans against the wall between a Hot Topic and a Sunglass Hut, sipping an Orange Julius and housing Auntie Anne’s while he debates between Chinese and Cajun. Chinese will still be good tomorrow morning, and Cajun might not sit right. All those spices.

He checks his watch. It’s almost nine. The mall will be closing soon, and Cas has been in the damned store for at least twenty minutes. The Mark is restless. If Dean doesn’t get out of here soon, he’s going to break something, maybe punch the head off one of those carousel horses.

He pokes his head inside Hot Topic, careful not to step past the threshold–there’s no way he’s tossing this smoothie to help Cas shop; the thing tastes like bananas and oranges. The only thing that would make it better is a shot of rum.

Cas isn’t directly in view. He must be behind a display or bent over—fantastic. Dean tries another tactic and shuts his eyes.

“Cas? Where do angels go after they… I mean if they die?”

Castiel frowned as he dragged his eyes away from the television to look down at the human that was curled up against his side on the couch. They were supposed to be watching a movie here, in the bunker’s makeshift living room, but it seemed that Dean’s mind had been elsewhere. Troubled green eyes were staring up at Castiel, awaiting an answer.

Trying to think back to all the times he’d died, Castiel came up blank. He only remembered his final moments, and the ones right after all the times that he’d been resurrected.

“I… I’m not sure.” Castiel replied truthfully, his hand absently rubbing Dean’s shoulder. “I think we merely cease to exist.”

Dean grimaced but didn’t say anything, his fingers restlessly fumbling with Castiel’s tie, which was already undone.

“Why do you ask? I’m more durable than you are, the chances of you outliving me are slim.” Castiel reminded him.

“That’s not why I’m asking…” Dean muttered, breaking eye contact. “I was just thinking, man. About Heaven and stuff. Humans don’t just cease to exist, you know. So I’d be there forever, but you won’t.”

Castiel sighed, slowly beginning to grasp where the conversation was heading.

Placing a single finger under Dean’s chin, Castiel forced him to look up again. “I’m an angel, Dean… I have access to Heaven, I’d be with you more often than not.”

“Not if we both die.” Dean breathed, his lower lip trembling. “I keep thinking about it… What if I’m stuck up there forever, huh? Without you? That ain’t paradise, that’s like an eternity of misery for me.”

Idly running his hand through Dean’s hair, Castiel bought himself some time to come up with a good answer to that. Something to offer the man whom he loved more than the universe itself some reassurance. He was on the verge of giving up, when he suddenly recalled something. Something crucial, a reminder for the both of them.

Feeling his lips curl into a soft smile, Castiel pressed a kiss to Dean’s forehead, causing the human to melt even more into their embrace. They were going to be alright, Castiel was sure of it, and he told Dean as much.

“You mustn’t worry…” Castiel confidently whispered against Dean’s hair. “Have I ever not returned to you, Dean Winchester?”

Nothing more was said on the subject. They both knew the answer to that question.

“You what?” he asks, wiping his hands on his jeans and making his way from the kitchen to where Cas is seated around the corner. There’s a laptop on the table in front of him and Cas’s eyes are fixed squarely on whatever’s on the screen. From the pinched, frustrated look on his face, it can’t be something good. “What did you find, babe?”

Cas’s eyes only flutter momentarily at the pet name before replying. “It’s an article someone has written about the Supernatural book series.”

“Oh no,” Dean groans. “Cas, don’t look at shit like that, man. It’ll just make your head hurt.”

“Charlie sent me the link. Dean,” Cas pins him with a serious glare, “this man is very wrong.”

Nothing better than a nice morning shower before work. Dean sighed with delight as the hot water cascaded down his back, his sore muscles relaxing at once. Hell yeah, this was heaven.

As he reached for the bottle of shampoo, his ears picked up on a sound that made him grin mischievously; his mystery neighbor was right on time again. Paper-thin walls couldn’t hide the sound of the shower being turned on in the apartment next to Dean’s.

Massaging the shampoo into his hair, Dean started humming under his breath, smiling as he permitted his voice to get louder and louder, the quiet humming gradually turning into actual words.

‘We gotta hold on, to what we’ve got Doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not We got each other, and that’s a lot For love, we’ll give it a shoooooot…’

Pausing deliberately, Dean waited. He beamed when as anticipated, his neighbor’s deep voice echoed from the other side of the wall.

‘Whoooooaa, we’re halfway there!’

Dean snorted before he chimed in again.

‘Whooooaa, living on a prayer!’

They sang the rest of the chorus together.

The Impala still runs rough.  Dean can hear it in the rattle of her engine, the way her door creaks when he opens it, the way her wheel’s askew from where he’d hit a curb and hadn’t stopped, hadn’t even thought about it, hadn’t cared.  Back when he hadn’t cared about anything, anyone.  He thinks sometimes it was easier then.  He hadn’t had to pretend to care, not the way he’s been pretending for years now, putting a token effort in at living: He’ll do his job, feed himself, lay his body down on a bed for a few hours every night. 

He opens up her hood and talks to her as he sticks his hands in her guts.  An apology, he guesses.  Because that’s always been something he’s done, trailing his fingers across her bumper when he walks behind her, keeping up that quiet soft talk like she’s a skittish animal shying out of his hands.  

He remembers when he used to care about her more.  More than most things.  More than anything except Sam.  More than Castiel, for a while.  She was his baby.

He’s hurt everyone he loves.  He’s hurt her too.

He still talks, still touches her like she’s something special, he doesn’t let up.  He doesn’t want to give away the fact that she doesn’t mean as much anymore.  

Sometimes it takes his breath away, how much he doesn’t care anymore.  How she’s just not the sun and moon and stars anymore.  Not to him, not anymore.  Not like other things.  He changes her oil and replaces her brakes like an apology for not loving her anymore.  He polishes her paint and shines her chrome like it helps.  Like it makes up for anything.

She looks like new; you can’t tell there’s anything wrong underneath the hood.

He runs his hands across her steering wheel.  His hands say he’s sorry.  He doesn’t know what else to say.

It takes him a few days to make up his mind, but Cas is prepared - mentally, emotionally - when he takes a trip upstairs to see Jimmy for the first time in years. He isn’t surprised to find that Jimmy’s and Amelia’s Heavens are one and the same; of course they are. He steps over the threshold of the Novaks’ home, the way it was on earth seven years ago, and is greeted by his former vessel, who appears in the foyer and pulls him into a hug.

“Long time no see, Cas,” Jimmy smiles, and a sudden, immense wave of relief washes for him to discover the man at such peace after all this time.

“Yes, it has been,” Cas replies. His voice is much deeper - always has been - and he notices Jimmy huff a laugh upon hearing it. “How are you?”

“Well…” Jimmy shrugs, the smile not leaving his face. “Ames is here now, just as I remember her. We’ve had a lot of catching up to do.”

“I can imagine,” the angel nods. He then ducks his head, suddenly nervous, his fingers clenching and unclenching at his sides. “I came to see you because I… I wanted to make sure that…” To make sure that you were alright, he wants to say, but it strikes him as silly now, given all that he’s put Jimmy through.

“I understand,” Jimmy offers first, and there’s a hand, warm and assuring on his shoulder. “I’m well, and so is Ames,” he says, “and in case you’re worried, I still don’t regret being your vessel.”

“Jimmy…” Cas can’t bear to look at him, this good man who gave everything for the sake of faith, something Cas himself couldn’t hold onto at times. “I could never thank you enough for what you did. Had it not been for you, I-”

“You wouldn’t have been able to save the world.” Jimmy laughs and the pat on his arm is friendly, almost affectionate. “Does that entitle me to asking you a favor, Cas? There’s something… I was hoping you could…”

Cas knows full well what’s on Jimmy’s mind but he lets him continue, eyes meeting blue identical to his own. “Of course. Anything you need.”

“… It’s Claire,” Jimmy smiles again, but it’s softer and a little sad with a strong undercurrent of longing. “Look after her for us? She’s all by herself and still so young. You’re- You’re the closest thing she has to family now.”

          Cas watches the taxi drive down the road until it’s just an amber speck on the pink horizon, but he imagines he can still feel Claire’s gaze cutting to him through the rearview window, even from feet and miles away. The dust and grit whipped up from the road stings his eyes, making them film over with reactionary tears, and for a moment he stands stock-still in the center of the road, dragging his thumb along the fold of his coat pocket, trying to ignore the feeling in his chest like his heart is a clenched fist. Angels, he supposes, aren’t meant to experience sensations that hurt the heart.

           Dean’s voice filters out from the motel room, curious, maybe a little anxious. “Cas?”

           “I’m coming,” Cas answers automatically, still squinting off into the sunset, before he turns and trudges across the road, past the Impala where Dean’s waiting for him.

Dean/Cas: Here Comes The Sun

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting. Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been clear. Here comes the sun, here comes the sun. And I say it’s alright.

“You don’t have to go,” Claire says, pulling at a loose thread in her sweater, feigning disinterest. “Not like it’s mandatory, Cas. They aren’t taking roll.”

Cas frowns, glances down at the bright pink paper before looking up. “But I’ve been invited,” he says seriously, and Claire would be annoyed if he weren’t so naïve. “I would love to meet your teachers, Claire. Of course I wish to go.”

“Go where?” comes Dean’s voice, as he appears in the doorway holding a mug. He pulls out a chair that he tugs close to Cas’ before plopping down, but it’s no less conspicuous than their usual mating dance so Claire just raises an eyebrow and chews her gum, smacks it once.

Cas sighs then slides the letter to his right for Dean to see. “It’s Curriculum Night next Monday,” he explains, the words sounding awkward, almost foreign, on his tongue. It’s strange, watching him like this, like watching her dad after dinner when he’d sign her permission slips and peruse the parent newsletters. But Cas isn’t her dad, as hard as that is to remember sometimes, which is why it’s confusing to have him care so god damn much. She almost wishes he were ruthless again, because it was easier to distinguish him from her father back then.

“Heh, I used to go to those.” Dean laughs when she shoots him a look, one of surprise. “I went for Sammy,” he says. “Well, when I could… when it made sense. Every now and then we’d stay in a town for long enough, which meant no switching schools so the classes actually mattered. At least for Sam.”

“Who met your teachers then?” Claire asks before she can stop herself. She half-expects Dean to be angry with her for prying, but he just shrugs and that’s somehow worse.

“I met ‘em. They weren’t anything special,” Dean quips. “I didn’t even show up for classes, right? They sure as hell weren’t expecting parents.” He shrugs again before taking a long drink of his coffee. He misses the way Castiel looks at him, soft, blue, and doe-eyed.

“Don’t mean I’m not gonna be there for this one, kiddo,” Dean says, and for a moment both Cas and Claire fall silent, before they blurt out “You’re going, Dean?” and “You’re going too?” at the same time. “What?” Dean laughs, glancing at Claire then turning to Cas. “You don’t want me to or something?”

“N-no,” Cas blinks, and Claire nearly sighs because he is so obvious. “I, um… I just thought you wouldn’t- In case there’s another hunt, I didn’t want to… impose.”

Dean huffs, though not in a mean way, just amused. “‘Impose’? What are we, strangers? C’mon, Cas, I can’t nag her about her schoolwork if I don’t know what she’s learning.”

“You already nag me about my schoolwork,” Claire gripes, and she rolls her eyes at Dean’s grin while Cas starts to look starry-eyed - again, obvious.

“The event begins at seven, Dean,” Cas informs him happily. He’s practically beaming when Dean replies, “By all means. Clear my schedule.”

Dean/Cas: Saturdays

Cas waking Dean up with sweet little kisses, murmuring ‘sweetheart’ into his hair and coaxing him awake by caressing his back.

Cas seeing Dean try and fail to put on the coffee, till he finally huffs out a laugh and goes over to help him, pressing in close. “I’ll get this,” he tells his bleary-eyed hunter, using the proximity to lay kisses on Dean’s freckled shoulders.

Cas joining Dean at the table in the library for their research, though he can’t go five minutes without throwing Dean an adoring look, quirking a lazy smile when Dean nudges his foot and chides, “Cas, you’re such a sap.”

Cas watching Dean make them a late lunch: sandwiches and chips. He doesn’t require food anymore so it’s really Dean chowing down on two sandwiches while they talk. It’s a bizarre phenomenon, being in love; Cas never imagined that he’d garner so much contentment from watching someone eat.

Cas convincing Dean that today’s gonna be Laundry Day - they’re out of socks - and Dean decides last-minute to throw in the shirt off his back with the load. He then has the nerve to smile at Cas - pretty and shirtless and smug. Cas has no other choice but to lift Dean onto the washer and kiss him stupid.

Cas finding Dean after his daily walk with Sam, on the couch in the rec room dozing off mid-Dr. Sexy. He shuts off the T.V. and maneuvers Dean so they’re both lying down, with Dean’s head tucked beneath his chin and the hunter draped all over him, a comfortable weight.

Cas letting Dean lead him by the hand to dinner, their fingers twined. Charlie giggles and Dean blushes hard, sort of squirming, but Cas just holds on tight because nothing makes him happier than Dean being affectionate.

Cas kissing Dean outside their bedroom later that night, cradling Dean’s face and relishing the soft little noises Dean makes against his lips. Dean pulls him closer by his shirt and Cas goes, goes, tells Dean “I love you” just because he can. Dean ducks his head as he quietly replies, “I love you, too.”

Cas wrapping Dean in his arms as he falls asleep, channeling his grace to keep the nightmares at bay till morning. He whispers a stream of trusted Enochian spells for comfort, watching over Dean just like he promised, years ago.

Dean hearing Cas lull him to sleep with caring, loving words. Some are ancient and angelic, a language he doesn’t understand, but every few phrases he catches “I love you” or “I’ve got you, Dean,” and he sleeps better than he has since he got the Mark, there in Cas’ arms.
