âŹI'm not your protagonist, I'm not even my own.âŹ
She remembers running.
She is four years old and she is running. There are dark creatures surrounding her and her little legs can only take her so far. Her cries for help are answered in the form of a woman in blue.
A protection spell. That's what she's told is cast on her once the monsters go away. And at four years old Kairi doesn't understand what it all means but for a moment she feels safe. For a moment she forgets what dangers await her hidden in the dark.
Her grandmother tells her a story about children fighting to keep the light safe; safe from people who wish to use it for their own gain, safe from the darkness those creatures came from. And Kairi is frightened, and she doesn't want to fight. She does not want to come face to face with those things again.
Do not fear the darkness for it cannot touch you.
It cannot touch her but it takes away her grandmother and her home. But the light brings her to a new home with new loved ones.
And she remembers running.
She is ten years old and she is running. Sora and Riku have taken off again in another one of their races, and her legs can only take her so far. She's not winning this but she'll trail behind and cheer them on anyway.
Kairi is out of breath once she reaches the boys. Who won, she wonders. But they've already moved on to fighting with their swords, not even half as tired as she feels. But that's okay, she's happy just being around them.
Come on Kairi, fight with us!
Kairi doesn't want to fight. She can't keep up with the way Riku moves or the strength Sora has. And anyway, she likes playing referee.
They stay until night falls and they are under a blanket of stars. And Kairi thinks of the children fighting for the light.
"S-Sorry?"
Sora asks gently. Kairi was a bit taller than him now. A bit older. It made sense though, he did spend a year in a sleep pod for... Something? He wouldn't remember even if he tried.
Everything felt so familiar. Everything looked right even though she looked more... Mature than him? It was real though. Maybe she just... had a growth spurt?
I wonder what Riku would look like then
"Of course I'm really here! I just... Showed up one day. I was looking for you and Riku when I.... passed out and woke up here... And I've been here for about a year so far but- this place and my friends have been needing my help."
Sora let go of Kairi. His hands slipped away from hers. Their fingers brushing past their palms as he let out the softest smile.
"I'm glad you're safe! If you're here, that means our home is back, right? Is everything okay?"
He only just noticed the tears in her eyes as she wiped at them. His smile turned into worry as the corners of his mouth dropped and his head cocked to the side.
"Kairi?... What's wrong?"
Kairi smiles as Sora explains. Of course he's made friends here, and obviously stuck around when they needed him to. That's just who her friend is, and it's almost comforting to hear untilâ
If you're here, that means our home is back, right? Is everything okay?
When they'd first lost him, Kairi had imagined their reunion going about a million different ways. She'd spend her days thinking of what she'd say when they found him againâ because they would find him. There was never a doubt in her mind that she and her friends would find a way to get to Sora.
But now that he's here at arms length, now that the initial shock of the moment is fading away, Kairi is getting the feeling that something isn't quite right. His questions are out of place. Of course the islands are safe, and everyone is perfectly fine because Sora made sure of that.
What's wrong?
A lot, apparently. His confusion at her state is disconcerting. Now, Kairi knows that as guilty as she feels for his disappearance that Sora would never hold it against her. It wouldn't even occur to him to blame her for any of it. But he wouldn't, shouldn't, be confused about her having been upset about it all.
She takes a moment to really look at him. He's different than she remembers. Sora seems almost younger than the last time they'd been together.
Memory has always been a tricky thing, and this wouldn't be the first time either of theirs has been messed with. And if this Sora doesn't remember everything that's happened to him, then maybe it isn't her place to tell him so.
Kairi turns towards the ocean, giving herself a moment of reprieve as she stares out at the waves. She takes a deep breath before turning to him again. "N-nothing. I just missed you, silly." And it isn't a lie, she feels like she's been missing him since the very start of their journey.
"What, did you really think I was just going to sit around and wait for you two lazy bums?"
ăđđđŤđ¤ đđđŤđ¤!ă- Vash followed as quickly as he could, his boots scrambling against the floor as they rounded a corner and then they tore at the bark as he went flying up the tree like a cat. He wasn't particularly good at climbing trees per-se, but he had plenty of experience navigating buildings in unexpected ways.
Now he clung onto a thick branch, wrapped around it like a koala with one hand awkwardly hanging onto the tails of his coat to keep them from snagging or exposing them.
"It's not like I intentionally try ta look suspicious! And I wasn't even running until they said I did something! I don't even under stand how --"
He was lamenting the situation... until he noticed that the girl... hadn't followed him. Now he was up the tree all alone, peering down at her.
...He had scrambled up the tree on instinct. Trying to find somewhere he could hide until the ones after him passed him by and maybe he could slip away.
Vash slumped hard against the branch, let go on his coat and let everything flop - coat, arms, legs - his cheek pressing against the bark.
"I really just have bad luck, that's all..."
Kairi must admit, albeit with great distaste, that running and hiding has become somewhat the norm for her these past few years, but stillâ climbing up a tree wouldn't have been her first impulse. And it has her curious about what kind of life this man leads for him to do so on instinct.
She almost feels guilty for calling him weird as the man rambles on, although she doesn't believe she's wrong for thinking so. He is weird, and maybe this is her sign to simply walk away from the stranger. But the more he speaks, the more sincere the guy seems. And would it really be so bad to try and help him out, even if it means hiding in foliage?
She glances around, and although it doesn't seem like they've attracted anyone's attention Kairi heaves as sigh as she grabs on to a branch and starts making her way up. Climbing trees isn't her area of expertise, but she is no stranger to it having grown up on the islands.
Kairi grabs on to branch careful not to slip as she hoists herself on to it.
"Okay," She takes a breath and sit on the branch. "I really don't think they're following you anymore." She says as she leans back on the barkâ a thinly veiled plea for a break in this "escape".
"Maybe we just have to try to change your luck then. First piece of advice; climbing up trees is probably not the best idea after being chased by law enforcersâ or whatever that group does." She's joking for the most part, and tries to convey that by offering the man a smile.
"I'm Kairi, by the way. Are from this place, or did you also come from somewhere else?"
ăđđđŤđ¤ đđđŤđ¤!ă- Trouble followed him like a plague but he definitely didn't have anything to do with the Adventurer's Guild and whatever was going on with them. He saw the uniform though and explaining himself to a child wasn't exactly what he wanted to try and do --
Wait.
His eyes grew big and wet and watery -- She was gonna help him?! Really?! Maybe his luck was turning around!
Vash looked at the girl and quickly scrambled after her when she tugged on his coat. He really felt like crying now!
"Really?! Thanks so much, kid!! I don't even know why they're after me! I didn't do anythin', honest! I always end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, it's a curse!" He followed, trying not to overtake the girl as they moved quickly. After all, he was an adult and had far longer legs.
She's grateful that Seaside Province is mostly apartments and alleys, because it makes hiding a much easier feat. The corner up ahead has a big enough tree that should provide some cover for two innocent "escapees". Kairi gives the man's coat one last tug, leading him towards it.
Kairi sighs in relief as she places her hands flat against the trunk, allowing it to take her full weight as she leans against it. "Okay, we should have lost them."
"You know," she starts and looks up at her strange companion. "I don't think it's a curse so much as it is you making yourself seem kind of suspicious and a little weird." She grins at him, eyes twinkling with amusement.
"Maybe start by not running away or hiding when they're looking for a culprit."
LINK CHUCKLED . ears wiggling , he pressed his lips thin to stifle a spreading GRIN before it could blossom in full . . . and failed in the endeavor . sora often had to be REMINDED to talk about himself , always flitting from thought to thought in the moment , or digging his heels into learning about link , the next . the one topic sora was ESPECIALLY chatty about , however , was anything to do with his friends . donald ( a different one than link had met , apparently . ) and goofy . riku , and . . .

@destinysoath / starter call !
Kairi can feel her cheeks heat up at the boy's words. She's no stranger to teasing, having grown up around Tidus, Wakka, and Riku, the main perpetrators. But a giggle escapes her nonetheless.
It does not come as any surprise to her that Sora's made friends with so many of the people here on the isles. It seems like each person she's met so far has had some connection with him. The familiarity of it makes her smile, because despite everything, he truly hasn't changed.
"We have, actually. I'm glad to know that he's been here all this time."
"Since you already know my name, can I know yours?"
ooc// If Namine is connected to Kairi the same way Roxas is to Sora, I want to think that Namine's abilities are directly tied to her.
There's not much to go by in canon but I'd like to think that when Kairi was a young child her drawings were her way of expressing herself. It was her way to "journal" so to be speak, when she was too young to be able to find the right words to express herself.
Her memories of her time in Radiant Garden are almost nonexistent because they were purposely hidden away, but I still like to think that there was always a nagging in the back of her mind, even as a young child. And sometimes she'd draw these strange images of labs and men in white coats. But as like with most children, these earlier bits of memories began to fade away. As did her need to doodle the things hidden so deep within her.
But as any child without a connection to their past, I think not being able to remember a single thing about her time before Destiny Islands has always bothered her. Which is why she was so drawn to Riku and his dreams of adventure. Because as scared as she was of the world and people around her changing, she still needed answers of her own life.
Which brings me back to Namine, and why she's able to manipulate memories, specifically Sora's. Not only is it born from Kairi's desire to manipulate her own memories to regain what was lost, but also what was done to her by Xehanort as a four year old.
âââ ę§ zelda stiffened , caught midway between washing her tea set ( a task she was reminded by notification to complete daily after her tea hour . ) seldom did she receive company . even lesser common were those with keys .
elusive , might be the best descriptor for zelda's previous housemates . so much so , that the princess had felt little shame in dispersing her belongings throughout her abode . touches of herself existed in the pea plants potted on the kitchen windowsill and the clippings of sewing thread sprinkled across the floor like forgotten dust bunnies . zelda lived here , and could be found in the finer details .
upon interruption , zelda pressed down upon the faucet and worked to dry her hands , neck craning to catch glimpse of the voice's owner from behind the opened door . before , she never paid attention to the intrusions of others , until nobody remained to intrude . suffice it to say : it was a welcomed change .
" if you have been given a key that unlocks , " zelda wet her lips , a tight pleased smile behind her words , " then you must be meant to enter : please come in . i would offer tea , however . . . "
zelda gestured toward the sink , set still soaking -- bound to become forgotten as hospitality rang priority , " . . . allow me to help you first . "
Kairi lets out a breath as the stranger on the other side of the door seems kind enough to invite her in. Kairi isn't one to dwell on her pessimistic thoughts, but having come so far in her journey she's learned to be cautious, especially in new worlds. She's also learned to rely on her innate ability to sense corruption within others, and so far she isn't getting anything dark coming from the girl.
In fact, one look around the home is all she needs to feel at ease. There's thread all around the floor, things in corners collecting dust, the sink itself with its overflowing dishes and kettle, the plants along the windowsill bringing life into the property. This place feels lived in.
It feels so much like her own home, of course not that her father would ever allow such disorder in the common areas. But her room was her sanctuary, and there she could be as disorganized as she pleased.
Kairi steps into the room, closing the door gently behind her. She's still got the orb with the rose inside that was presented to her by the strange figure that greeted her, as well as the device that looks so much like her gummiphone.
"That's alright. Don't worry about the tea." The princess offers a smile of her own in return. "I think I need help with these things they gave me. I don't know what they're supposed to do."
"Oh, I haven't introduced myself. Sorry." She gives a sheepish smile and extends her free hand. "I'm Kairi. I guess I'll be staying with you for the time being. If there's anything I can do for you just let me know, okay?"
starter for @silentaura !
Kairi debated whether or not to follow the instructions given to her upon arrival, but seeing as she had no idea where she was or how she got here, doing some recon was the best place to start. And instead of aimlessly wandering around, at least this key given to her had an address etched onto it.
#211, Seaside Province.
The house before her didn't seem out of the ordinary, it gave nothing to be wary of. Kairi sighed and pushed the key into the lock. "Okay, here goes nothing." She slowly turns the knob and makes her way in.
What greeted her was nothing unexpected. It was a home, fully furnished. The entrance led to a living room area, with a kitchen to her right. If it weren't for the key, Kairi would feel like she's breaking and entering. Still, she carefully closed the door as her eyes scanned the room making as little noise as possible.
"Hello, is anyone here? They gave me a key for this place, so I hope it's okay that I came in."
âWhat did Kairi and I have in common?â âIt was hurt. We had both lost ourselves, and we were hurting in a way weâd never hurt before. Thereâs no greater pain in the world⌠I ask you, Sora: What would you have done?â
âI wouldâve helped you, of course. Both of you! Iâdâve figured out how to undo the hurt.â
Sora gently leaned into the warmth of the girl's hand. He turned to face her, staring into the beautiful ocean blue eyes in front of him. Almost immediately Sora was filled with comfort and hope but he couldn't tell why.
"How-" Sora pulled away slowly. He felt the fingers of the girl leave his cheek one by one until he watched her hand fall back to her side. "How do you know my name?.. Have we met?"
The hair should have given it away.
The eyes should have given it away.
"Why do you look so-"
Sora took a step to his right, glancing around to view her side. He then stumbled slightly, catching himself, but using the momentum of the trip to circle around the girl before stopping in the same place once more. The waves washed away the footprints Sora left behind but the small shell stayed between them.
"Familiar..."
Sora quickly knelt down to pick up the thalassa shell. He ran his fingers over the ribbed face and reached out his free hand, lifting the hand of the girls towards him, placing the shell in it.
He knew how awkward this was getting. He knew the eye contact has been held for minutes upon minutes too long, but Sora didn't care. The corners of his mouth curled into a smile as tears formed and fell from his cheeks. He coughed gently but almost charged the girl with a quick wrap of his arms, hugging her tightly.
"Found you... Kairi..."
Kairi's definition of home has meant many things in her life. Once upon a time, it meant the gardens and library where she spent her days with her grandmother. And she supposes that there was also a time where her parents, the ones from Radiant Garden, were also her home. And then it became the Mayor's house in Destiny Islands, and then...
Sora and Riku are wedged so deep within her heart, that the feeling of homesickness comes only when they are gone from her side. She can be anywhere, even back on the islands, and still feel like so much of her is missing when they're gone.
Riku always a steady presence, his quiet but immense strength keeping her afloat.
And Sora...
Sora will always be he safe space. He was the hero in her tale long before they knew of the heartless. His easy going and comforting nature has always brought comfort to Kairi. Even in her dreams when she doubted her own power against Xehanort, it was her memories of him, of his protectiveness that helped her win the fight.
Kairi didn't think that she'd land on anything tangible when she reached out her hand. But not only did she feel the warmth of his skin, he also leans into her touch.
He doesn't recognize her, and maybe that in itself should be making the alarm bells in her head go off. But Kairi can't move from her spot, simply watches as he takes her in. He trips and it's most Sora-esque thing that a giggle escapes her.
She sees the recognition settling in his eyes, and before she has a moment to react to the small shell being placed in her hands, Kairi is being pulled into a hug.
Found you...
That's funny, because I've been looking for you too. She wants to tell him, but her voice betrays her as she wraps her arms around the boy.
This is real.
Something's different, Sora's different.
But this is real.
Kairi tightens her hold on the boy as her body starts trembling, trying to hold back her own sobs. A millions things she's wanted to say to him, a million things she's written in unsent letters. And yet the only thing she can think to say is,
"I'm sorry."
I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
I'm sorry I let them use me against you again.
I'm sorry you had to put yourself at risk again for me.
I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough when it mattered the most.
She doesn't want to let go, because there's a fear that when she does, Sora will go away. And that this meeting is nothing more than a trick of the mind. It takes all of her willpower to let go of her friend. Kairi takes a moment to look a him, really look at him. She can't help but smile at him, even as she wipes at cheeks.
"You're really here. How did you get here?"
Perhaps he should have been more on guard in an unfamiliar environment, but he was all too used to humans being unable to truly perceive him, even if he was in his natural form. And now he had the comfort of the music he and the other boys had worked so hard on to ease his discomfort. Lulled into a sense of security, he wasn't really paying attention.
So when a rock came flying out of nowhere and impacted his phone, he let out a high pitched yelp and promptly fell off the branch he'd perched on. His phone went flying from his hands and his gat tumbled off his head when he hit the ground and twisted in a roll to come to land on all fours. A snarl leaves his throat even before he zeroes in on the one who assaulted him, but he's startled out of it before he makes a proper move.
That's a child. Not a very young one, but that is definitely a little girl that threw a rock at him. And is shouting at him angrily.
There's no weapon in her hands at least, no tell-tale glimmer of the Honmoon or a hunter weapon, so that's nice. There are, however, lots of rocks around.
"What?" The question is more of a bark than a word, the demon shifting to crouch and flexing his claws in the dirt. If this child wanted to try to attack him again, he wasn't about to let her get away with it. He would fight back.
Muffled in the background, his phone continues to play the cheerful little bop.
"You attacked me," the words growl out, a little muddled from the fangs hidden behind his mask. "Why should I answer?"
"Yes!" Kairi punches the air as she watches the device fall to the ground. Looks like those long days spent blasting magic at random objects were well spent. See? I didn't even use my keyblade. Lea would be congratulating her with an ice cream if he were here.
But whatever joy the moment brought her, it soon escaped her as the boy...? No, this person was not human, landed on all fours, making the hair on her arms stand up. It's almost like he was...
"A heartless?" Kairi shakes the thought away. His mannerisms may be similar to them but they're not able to speak the way he does. Their presence doesn't feel the same. And the sound of his voice alone makes her want to run the other way, but Kairi stands her ground with her fists clenching at her sides.
"I can sense the darkness off of you." She replies. Her eyes narrow as phone still plays its catchy tune. "I won't let you hurt innocent people, if that's what you're after."
đcrafting new friendships- kairi & hiccup.
"You make stuff too? That's pretty neat!"
Hiccup's love for sword making and other hobbies is what makes him occupied . She does seem new based from his observation. On top of that, nothing else. His dragon observed their interaction from a distance. He doesn't seem to mind her presence around them but her presence feels rather trusting to the dragon.
"Um, what do you exactly make? I've been crafting armor and swords since I was eight?" The boy racked his brains for the memory since the start of this journey before he started slaying dragons to taming them . It's a weird transition for this guy but he'll manage .
"Don't worry about Toothless, he doesn't bite. I remember someone saying on the island that he looks like a heartless the other day but I don't know much about them ."
@destinysoath/Kairi liked for a starter !
One would think that for a person who has been crafting since her earliest memory, making a charm from washed up shells should be like riding a bike.
Kairi's been sitting at the same spot for what feels like hours with her small collection of shells, trying to string them together. She's almost got the needle through one of them when a voice startles her.
Having narrowly avoided pricking herself, her eyes follow the voice to its source. She eyes the stranger up, searching for any familiarity or even a hint of ill will, but comes up short on both fronts.
Kairi offers a sheepish grin as she holds up one of the cracked shells. "I'm trying to make a charm. I made one for myself a long time ago, but a friend has it so I wanted to make a new one, but I think I'm a little out of practice."
Her ears perk up at the boy's words. Eight years old and building armor and weapons? He doesn't seem that much older than her. For a moment Kairi wonders if the boy is a soldier, but before she responds with her own questions, the mention of Toothless and Heartless stop her in her tracks.
"Woah!" How she missed the very big and very much a heartless looking creature, she's not sure. "Toothless, that's his name? I like that. " She giggles at the sound of it.
"Someone on the island, huh? Maybe you've met a friend of mine." She smiles and offers her hand. "I'm Kairi! It's nice to meet you, Toothless and...?"

Always On My Mind
Amber hues of light shimmered against the ocean's waves as Aevum's star set behind the sea. A trail of footprints led from the boardwalk to the waterline. As waves swash the beach, the footprints fill with sand, breaking the trail behind a boy dressed in black, red, and yellow.
His hands were in his pockets and his hood covered his face as he stared at the sand, glancing over shells and sea glass, picking up a few he finds to his liking.
Sora couldn't help but be lost in thought. One moment he was at the "World That Never Was". The next, he was stepping out of a tower that led him here. A new world with new faces. No Donald or Goofy, no Riku or Kairi. Is he ever going to complete his journey? Will he ever make it home?
Sora walked a few more steps. His feet continuing to splash in the water and sink gently in the sand until he finds a thalassa shell. But as he's about to reach for it, he notices a small hand reaching for it too. He glances up and lets out an ever so gentle smile.
"You go ahead, sorry. I already have plenty of other shells in my pocke-"
Deep blue eyes widen as he stares at this girl for what feels like an eternity. He then shakes his head and looks away toward the water. Sorry, you look like someone I'm trying to find. Didn't mean to weird you out." The boy muttered with an awkward giggle.
@destinysoath
The ocean will always remind Kairi of home, of time spent with her friends dreaming of adventures far away. The ache in her heart for those days long gone is the painful price of growing up. And she and her friends have more than paid it. Sometimes she wishes she could go back in time and tell those kids to slow down, to enjoy the small moments before it all eventually goes away.
Still, there's a comfort the sea will always bring. The sound of the waves are the same in every world, and when she closes her eyes Kairi can almost believe that she's back at the islands. That soon she'll hear Sora and Riku running up behind her, inviting her into their game.
A smile graces her features at the mere thought of it. Kairi knows in her heart that the three of them will be together again. Someday soon, she's sure of it.
Perhaps it's that belief that's brought her out here today, and has her collecting sea shells. And it feels as though the universe itself is reassuring her, because there a little ways down where the shore meets the sea is a thalassa shell.
Kairi barely registers the person reaching out for the same lightly colored shell, too lost in her own enthusiasm.
She glances up at the boy, offering a polite smile. "Oh, are you suâ" The words die in her throat as she takes in the familiar blue eyes that meet her own. This has happened before, she reminds herself. This isn't real.
Don't chase the dreams.
Kairi doesn't realize she's been holding her breath until Soraâ or an illusion of the boy she misses, speaks once again.
She looks like someone he's trying to find, and he...he looks like a memory. A vision of her friend from what feels like a lifetime away. Don't chase the dreams. It's a futile reminder, because she can't pry her eyes away from him.
"Sora...?" Her voice sounds far away to her own ears and it feels like time has stopped. Kairi's hands have a mind of their own as she reaches out to touch his cheek, if only to make sure that this isn't some hallucination, a cruel trick of this world.
"Are you really here?"
