¦ ✿ ¦ She didn’t want to go back in the water. more specifically, she didn’t want to go back to a tank where she was going to be nothing more than a creature to marvel at. hadn’t she had enough of that already? she wanted to be able to walk around without being constantly watched or feeling like - being - someone else’s property. then again, what could she do? for the majority of her life, she had belonged to someone. she probably wouldn’t even survive if she was let go back into the sea. this was the life she knew, and it didn’t look like it would change any time soon.
at least these people were kind. they had found her and fought to get her out of the ringmaster’s hold. they won and they managed to gain custody over her. they had even got a doctor ( vet? ) to look her over and care for the injuries she had obtained. true, there was always someone watching her, but it had been the most kindness she had been shown in years.
but then came the time she was to go back in a tank - or exhibit, or whatever these people wanted to call it. at least they allowed her to take some time so she could adjust and take things in before entering the water. it was huge compared to what she had been given at the circus. the water was clear and she could see other life in there. she even managed to spot someone else in there. the other merperson she had been told about. they had told her the truth; she wouldn’t be alone. she still remained silent, but her eyes seemed to light up a bit as she gazed in the water.
a hand touched her shoulder and she flinched, head spinning to see who it was. just her new owner, the kind gentleman who helped her.
❝ the aquarium just opened, so there’s not a lot of people here yet. you should probably go in soon before it starts getting busy. so you can get use to everything. ❞
she didn’t respond immediately, but eventually she gave a small nod. taking another glance down at the water, she finally sat on the edge of the platform she was standing on, letting her legs dip into the water. her legs joined back together, her tail and fins now being her only option of mobility. the marks on her sides - that might have been mistaken as scars by a normal person - opened, gills ready to take the water in and make it possible for her to breathe under the surface. she took one last glance at the man before letting go of the platform, allowing herself sink down under the water.
there was so much color. she had nearly forgotten how beautiful the life under the water could be. and the water was easy to breath in. when she finally turned and swam down towards the bottom, she realized two things; just how much room this place had, and that she wasn’t the greatest swimmer… funny, a mermaid that wasn’t a master swimmer.
she had nearly reached the bottom, her webbed hand reaching out to touch one of the plants, when she caught sight of something large moving off to the side. her gaze lifted, meeting the silver-grey eyes of the male in the tank with her. the other merperson. her worries rose; she was use to being alone, an object to gawk at. how was she suppose to act around someone that was in the same position as she was? was he territorial? she knew nothing about him aside from the little their master had told her.
breaking their gaze, she turned and swam behind a large nearby rock, peeking out a little bit to keep an eye on the stranger.
He’d been waiting in the water, behind a rock for her to show up. Wanting to keep his distance from her so she could explore at first. As he watched from below, he noticed her sitting at the edge, getting her feet wet. Even able to witness the transformation of her tail. It was always an interesting sight to behold, even for Allen.
When she hit the water, he hid behind the rock more. Wanting to shield himself from her sight. He didn’t want to come off as intimidating, and wanted her to get use to everything first. To examine the tank before she met him. Knowing everything must’ve been disorienting for her--- foreign ---maybe even shocking. It was luckily for the merman that he was rather patient and didn’t mind avoiding her till she was somewhat comfortable.
However, as she came close to him--- as she approached him ---he had to move away. Scolding himself for it soon after as she ran away to hide behind the same rock he’d just moved away from.
He quickly put his hands up when he saw her get scared. Staying where he was, not even daring to approach her. Unsure if she would possibly attack him like a cornered animal if he did. Allen would guess that the other was more likely to run away.
❝ W-wait! I’m not gonna hurt you, I swear. ❞
He started out, smiling at her to try and come off friendly. Cursing the timing of all this as he heard muffled talking. Why did the owner even think it was a good idea to put all this on them this soon?
