His breath hitched slightly. In all honesty, he’d been expecting her to push him away, not cling to him, not cry. She was so small…..so thin…..He could feel her bones through the thin shirt she was wearing. Nevermind the irritation of the water in her tears, he had to fight back the sheer anger that echoed in his core at the idea that someone could cause such harm to such a pure soul.
His grip tightened slightly before he shifted, and stood…taking her with him. It took a moment for him to get her situated in a comfortable position for him….but once he was sure she wasn’t going to start flailing, he started walking away from the park. He said nothing as he walked, but his pace was brisk. It was likely wherever she lived was close to that park and he wanted to be as far away from it as he could be before finding a place to stay. Normally he’d just pick a roof to lounge on, but that was out of the question with the young child at his side now. he’d have to find a hotel room, that was a definite fact.
He didn’t stop until he was sure they were far enough away, he didn’t say a word until his feet stopped moving in front of a rather nice looking hotel. It was in the middle of the city, a good two or three miles away from the park, and not the place one would look for a runaway. It was too fancy. But it was perfect to hide for a day or so. He shifted the child briefly before looking down at her.
“….I’m going to get us a room, okay? But I need you to stay quiet.” he said, giving her a soft smile. “I just don’t want the clerk asking questions, you understand, right?”
He realized that this was….odd, awkward, and he knew. He knew that legally, he was kidnapping her. But sometimes you had to do what was right, instead of what was the law. It took only a moment for him to walk through the doors, and up to the clerk…using his free hand to hand the man some money and ask for a suite for one. The man didn’t ask any questions. In fact, it seemed like he didn’t even see the child in Koun’s arms. He merely handed Koun the key to his room and went on with his job…..as Koun made his way to the elevator and up to the designated room.
“Here we are~” he said cheerfully as he opened the door, and closed it with his foot once inside. He set Mari on the only bed in the room. It was a suite, complete with a bathroom and a small kitchen. It was the reason he had chosen this hotel, as it was livable in. Here, He would be relatively safe from any prying eyes. The best part was that no one knew the child was here…..not that she knew that.
“….Are you hungry?” He asked after a moment, worry on his face. Mari was….too thin. She needed to eat, and she needed to eat soon.
¦ ✿ ¦ The young girl stayed still in his arms, only making occasional hiccups and soft cries as she was held by Yuri. he was so gentle with her, his hug offering only comfort and warmth. it was so different than the attention her father gave her. a nice attention... one she actually liked rather than dreaded.
it was about 10 minutes before she lifted her head, returning to the world around her. he was walking, carrying her... somewhere. she wasn’t sure where, he didn’t say anything. and if he had, she must not have been paying attention. but she stayed quiet just like he did, resting her head on his shoulder as she watched the passing scenery. she had rarely gone further into the town then the park, mostly due to worry she would get lost (and it was honestly too busy for her.) even as it became darker, there just seemed to be more people around that area...
he carried her for what seemed like hours before they stopped, glancing at him when he shifted her. at his words, she watched him for a moment before nodding. she... guessed that made sense. if she talked, people may ask who she was. then it would just be easier for her father to find her... it would be nice to stay hidden away from him for as long as possible.
once again, the girl rested her head against his shoulder, watching as Yuri entered the lard building and approached the man at the desk. she was rather pleased the man didn’t seem to really notice her. if she wasn’t really noticed, then it would be harder to remember her and what she looked like - at least those were her thoughts...
entering the elevator was another thing... she had never been in a building big enough that needed one, so it was honestly pretty terrifying getting into a giant metal box. it didn’t seem to upset Yuri though... Mari hid her face away in his neck, holding him tightly until he announced they were in the room.
it was nice... bigger than her room. and more colorful. she especially liked seeing the kitchenette there; she would be able to make some meals for him them. and she was a bit hungry... was it rude to ask for food?
❝ i’m n-not... ...w-well... m-maybe a l-little b-bit... ❞
it was more rude to be dishonest, right? and she really could use a little something to eat... but the kind man shouldn’t have to make her anything; she knew how to cook.
❝ i-i can make s-something, t-though. i-i’m okay. ❞
she pushed off the bed she had been sitting on, making her way to the small kitchen. she wasn’t sure if there was any food there at the moment ( they had just gotten there, after all ) but she could at least check for now...

It was close to dark, that time of day where orange bathed the earth. Heralding the sun’s trip to the other side of the world. But despite the child’s begging, Koun did not release her. If anything, for a moment, his grip tightened. Not enough to hurt her, but it was obvious that he wasn’t happy.
She was scared…but not of him. Fear came off her in waves, and he watched her actions, as she batted at his hand, looking off and around almost paranoid. She was afraid for him. And that perhaps…..pulled at his core the most.
“No….” he said after a moment, his mind racing. What could he do? Maybe take her to the authorities? No, If that had been an option, surely the child would have taken it by now. Besides, it was likely that they would just look at him as the one who’d harmed her……instead of the real abuser.
But how could he calm her down? If she made too much more noise, someone was bound to notice this little scuffle. Koun just didn’t…he didn’t know how. He didn’t have experience. Closing his eyes, he tried to remember what he’d seen in his long life. What did people do when children were scared or hurt? Usually humans would attempt to soothe the child…but he didn’t know how to do that…..Especially when Mari wasn’t actually injured (in a sense). But after a moment, he did recall one thing he’d seen.
“I won’t let you go….I’m sorry.” he replied softly, his face twisting. “I can’t. Knowing that you’ll be going back, just to get hurt again….I…It would be against what I am to let that happen……” With a gentle, yet firm tug, he pulled her close, wrapping his free arm around her in a what he assumed was a hug, dulling his internal temperature to where it wouldn’t hurt her. Instead it was a gentle warmth, even as he gave a soft grumbling growl under his breath.
“I won’t let him hurt you again. That’s my swear to the Gods.”
¦ ✿ ¦ Worry mixed with a bit of panic only continued to grow in the girls eyes as the sun got lower and the man refused to let her go. she needed to get home. if not by nightfall, then at some point during the night. before sunrise at the very least. her father would be upset, but it wouldn’t be as bad with that then if she tried to stay away. if he found out that someone was trying to keep her away from him...
Yuri was going to end up just like her uncle.
his refusal to let her go only made her shake more, tears now starting to stream down her cheeks. she wasn’t exactly pulling against him anymore; more like leaning away - hoping he would let her go so she could run home. but his hold was firm, and he spoke how he couldn’t let her return to her home where her father would only end up hurting her again.
but it was better for her to get a bit of pain and keep going then for her father to find Yuri and hurt - or remove - him.
then she was pulled in closer to him, an arm holding her close in a hug, and she froze. hugs were something she wasn’t very use to. touch was something she wasn’t very use to - aside from her father ( so frankly, she would have just as well preferred to have been left alone and to her own devices. )
but... he was so warm. a warmth that helped to relax her a bit. it brought a sense of comfort and safety to her, though she knew it wouldn’t last very long.
she buried her head into the side of Yuri’s neck, her small free hand gripping at his top as she let herself cry quietly. she was still scared he would be hurt and what her father would do to her when he eventually caught them, but she felt as if she shouldn’t argue with Yuri any longer. he seemed to genuinely care about her well being, and would probably keep insisting that he wouldn’t let her return home. she couldn’t make it on her own, though; she had tried before. she was frightened on what the future would bring, and all she could do was hold onto the kind man and cry.
"A-ah excuse me, but could you point me in the right direction of this hotel?" Lord, his Japanese was getting worse by the day. He could only hope that they other would understand what he was saying.
¦ ✿ ¦ The young girl looked at the paper, staying quiet as she thought of where the hotel could be. it wasn’t anywhere where she usually walked around by...
❝ i… i think that hotel is more in the center of the city, not around here. ❞
however, she had been around that area before. and she would feel horrible if she let the gentleman go without trying to help him. it was still rather early...
❝ i c-c… can probably lead you some of the way there, if you would like. ❞
she could help him and make it back home before dark. she was sure of it.

Ah. So she’d chosen to call him Yuri. Interesting. Usually people chose to call him Koun….but this girl hadn’t. In response to her polite bow, he gave her a warm smile.
“A pleasure, Mari.”
What a cute name. Her mannerisms didn’t match her name, and he wondered if there was something he could do about that. But first thing was first. He needed to verify the scent that he’d placed on her….the scent that caused a part of his core to grow colder. He just had to wait for her hand to touch his…….There!
In a movement far too fast for the young girl’s eyes to catch, the concealed fox had snatched her arm in a heated grip that wouldn’t allow her to escape as he pulled up her sleeve to check. His fears were confirmed, and he quickly changed his grip as to not hurt her…but still keep her in his grasp.
He could fit her whole hand…wrist and all in his own hand. If he put too much pressure in his hand, her poor little bones would break, so he had to be careful as he inspected the marks that were very prominent on her pale skin. That one looked like a large hand….larger than his own. He could even count the fingers in the bruise. He didn’t need to look at her other arm. He didn’t need to look at her neck. He knew what he would find there, and he was not happy with it.
“….I had a feeling that’s what I was going to find….” he muttered under his breath, but his once warm tone had turned to ice. He did not release her….knowing full well that she would run away the moment she was free. “I apologize for frightening you, Mari. But your mannerisms were a little too…forced. I assume that most people overlook it as shyness or a reserved nature.”
Once he started talking to her, the warmth returned to his voice, to his face. As long as he didn’t look down at the thin little arm that he held, the warmth stayed.
“I’m a little more…perceptive than most people.” He wouldn’t tell her that he could smell the marks before he even saw them. He wouldn’t tell her yet that his perceptiveness was due to his nature as a God (A forgotten one, but still a god). “Mari, your father did this to you, didn’t he? Why did he do this to you?”
The last part was a question to himself. Because he didn’t understand. Why would a parent hurt their child like this? Was he possessed by a demon? No, Demons weren’t very common these days. Well, that wasn’t exactly true, but they didn’t prey on humans like in the past. It was…complicated. But maybe one had gone rogue….? No, he’d notice that. This girls’ father…..had done this to her because he wanted too. And Koun didn’t understand that. He just didn’t understand….
¦ ✿ ¦ The first she noticed was just how warm Yuri’s hand was. not hot - it didn’t hurt at all - but it was warmer than most others. rather comforting, especially in the cold weather.
those thoughts quickly dashed away when her whole hand was captured in his grip, pulling up her sleeve to show the dark marks that were hiding there. she let out a sound that could only be described as a squeak in surprise, quickly trying to pull out of his grasp. it didn’t do much aside from make herself more tired; she wasn’t strong enough to even wiggle a little bit out.
this really scared her... she didn’t like people seeing her bruises. they asked questions, and that was never a good thing. besides... she didn’t even like seeing the discolor on her skin. why did he have to do this?
❝ p-please... l-let me g-go... ❞
her voice was quiet, and she was still pulling against his grip. he wasn’t letting her go... why? she needed to get home. her father couldn’t learn about this. it wouldn’t be good for Yuri or herself. if her father found out that someone had seen her bruises, she would be locked in her room for who knew how long.
her pulling wasn’t as strong, but she started to shake in fear. not really of the stranger, but of what her father might do if she didn’t get home soon. she started to push against his hand with her free hand, but it didn’t do much of anything... until he let her go, she was stuck there with him and couldn’t go back to her father. father wasn’t going to be very happy with her...
his questions came to her ears and she stopped pulling. he wasn’t going to let her go at all, was he? she didn’t want her father to hurt him. all she wanted to do was go home and sleep and go back to her dream. that was the only place things would be better.
❝ i... i d-don’t know... b-but please, l-let m-me go. if i’m n-not home by dark, h-he’ll be very m-- u-upset. ❞
she gave another small tug, hoping he would let her go so she could run home and hopefully get there before her father...

there are people you haven’t met yet who will love you
Someone please rip this sadness out of me.

Despite being a stranger, Koun radiated nothing but warmth. In his mannerisms, even the area around him. He was warm. Even the parts that had been exasperated in his speech, his voice had always held a gentle warmth to it. He was dealing with a child, after all. Maybe not so much a child child, but still a young human. These situations were always delicate.
“I suppose we are….” he sounded a bit…upset at that. No that wasn’t the right term for it. It was a kind of sulkiness that young children would often have hidden away in their voice…..but he didn’t seem to be too aware of it. “Well, why don’t we start there, hm? You can call me Koun or Yuri if you’d like.”
He paused, tilting his head at her answer of the meat. So her father was a deer hunter. The gentle smile on his face didn’t move, as he gave a hum of contemplation.
“I know a few Venison dishes….not many since it’s not a type of meat I deal with often…..but I know a few. If it’s something you have readily, why not a stew? That would last you quite a few days as well.” he offered. “Some beef stock, various vegetables, and cut the venison up into smaller pieces and cook it all together. Granted, it’s not something that can be done before nightfall, as it would likely taste best if it was left there overnight. For something a little quicker, you can always have venison steaks with mushrooms. Simmer the meat over medium heat, add a little mushroom stock, with sliced mushrooms, and flip the meat when it gets charred on one side.” He paused, putting a hand on his chin. “Asparagus or Green Beans would go nicely with that too…..”
He tsked under his breath, slightly absorbed in the idea of food. While he didn’t eat very often, he was quite good at cooking different things. Both of those recipes he’d come up with on the fly, and while they were improvised, they did sound quite appetizing. Yet, the lie that flew off the young girl’s lips caught his attention, and he turned his eyes back to her. Those dark orbs narrowed slightly, watching her submissive actions and hands flying to her neck and sleeves.
Lies were something a fox like him were quite aware of, and were able to pick out among the truth. After all, the lie she spoke was one he did as well, far too often. A part of him was tempted, reach out and grasp that tiny wrist and pull back the sleeve…..but no. He wouldn’t do that unless she initiated touch first.
But he was a fox. And he was ever tricky.
“I’m glad you’re okay…..um….Oh.” his facial expression took on one of embarrassment, and he held out a hand for her to shake. “I told you my name, but I’m afraid I don’t know yours…..” In all accounts, he was completely genuine. He wished to know the child’s name. If he knew her name, he’d be able to find her again. He’d be able to help her if she needed. But also….he needed to be sure of something. And while his reasons for wanting to know her name were genuine, the handshake….well, it was for her own good.
She just needed to initiate touch. He wouldn’t lay a finger on her any other way.
¦ ✿ ¦ Mari stayed quiet, continuing to rock back and forth on the swing. she found a small bit of comfort talking to this man. he was very kind to her, despite her being a bit wary and a little standoffish. and even being outside and being cold, it almost felt like like it had gotten a bit warmer since he started talking to her... maybe that was just her imagination, or her nervousness. it didn’t really matter anyways.
she hadn’t meant to upset him with what she had said, but she knew she had to at least make it be known. they didn’t know each other. not really anyways... but, she did suppose knowing his name was a step forward from strangers.
listening carefully to the ideas for meals, she made sure to remember what he said. a stew would be a very good idea, but not practical for that night. she had never been the greatest at cooking steak, but it was a better idea than none.
❝ t-those sound really g-good.... t-thank you very much. ❞
she gave a small bow Yuri as thanks. she could at least start making a stew for the next night, but if she wanted to get things done before her father got home, she would need to make her way there soon... would it be okay for her to ask if it was all right to leave? or should she wait just a little bit longer..? she really wasn’t sure. perhaps just a little bit longer would be okay, that way it didn’t seem like she was just asking for a recipe and then leaving just like that. that would be rude, right?
her eyes finally looked at towards him, more so, at the hand he offered towards her. she had never been one to let others get so close to her... it scared her. for more than one reason. but... a simple hand shake would be a good way to thank him for his help, as well as a proper way to say goodbye. that would be a nice way of saying she needed to leave, right?
❝ um... Mari... it was n-nice to t-talk to you, Mister Yuri... ❞
with that being said, she carefully reached out, accepting his hand in a shake. her hand was so small compared to his...

「 ☄️ 」 — Reiyn had just finished cooking the main dish, topping half of a plate with fluffy steamed rice and the other with the stew. The process is repeated with a second plate before both are placed on the counter and looked after with hands on her hips and pleased smile. Now, all that is left is to check on her guest. As she turns to exit the kitchen she stops short, jumping slightly in surprise at the girl’s quiet reappearance. She says nothing at first, taking time to recollect herself with a sheepish clear of her throat, managing a smile as the girl expresses her thanks.
“I’m glad you could unwind a bit, sorry if those clothes are a bit big on you though.” She looked pretty cozy in them though. “I guess I was pretty tall to begin with, even at your age.” The plates on the counter are picked up and brought to level with Mari to present what they would be having that evening.
“Mild chicken curry with steamed rice and a side of croquettes.” Head tilts in the direction of the table where an oblong plate is already set. The potato patties atop it are arranged in a circular pattern overlapping one another surrounding two ramekins with dips.
“Figured some comfort food would be nice to have, hm?” She nods politely towards Mari before passing her and placing the two plates on respective sides of the table between cutlery that had been set out at an earlier time.
“Feel free to take a seat and dig in, I’ll get us some drinks. Do you want anything in particular?” She maneuvers her way back to the kitchen the fridge door can be heard opening followed by hum as she takes into account what she has. “I have a few cans of Sprite in here… cranberry juice, apple juice, water…”
¦ ✿ ¦ She hadn’t been meaning to scare the kind woman... seemed she walked quieter than she thought. perhaps she should work on walking a bit louder if she was really intended to stay here for a while. she didn’t want to startle Reiyn again just by walking into the same room as her...
❝ it’s okay. t-they’re comfortable. ❞
besides, she preferred to wear clothes that were a bit larger on her. it hid how thin she actually was. plus, they were clean and fresh, as well as new to her. she wouldn’t complain about them in the slightest.
wide eyes stared at the food that was presented. it looked amazing, and smelled even better. Reiyn had made this, even when she had said she didn’t want anything? did Reiyn manage to guess how hungry she had really been? either way, Mari was thankful for the foresight and so was her empty stomach.
❝ t-this is... a lot of f-food... ❞
Mari watched as the plates were set down, and she only hesitated for a moment before moving to sit at the table in front of the delicious looking food. again, she paused before picking up any utensils. was it really okay to start eating before her? but she had said it would be okay...
finally, she took a bite of the food, and a small blush came to her checks. it was incredible. it tasted so wonderful. it was tempting to eat it quickly, but she didn’t want to be rude and forget her manners. after a few bits, letting the warm feeling the food was giving overtake her, she answered,
❝ um... maybe t-the Sprite? i t-think... i’ve had it once before... it has the... t-the bubbles t-that makes your t-tongue t-tingle, r-right? ❞
