A campaign dedicated to building solidarity by destroying hateful and derogatory language through intergroup dialogue and peer education.

Students had a powerful conversation about police brutality and the media tactic of changing the narrative to silence marginalized voices. It was so encouraging to hear how our youth are able to critically analyze media messages, especially those that negatively portray certain groups. It was also powerful to hear students openly discuss their discomfort with engaging in dialogues about police brutality. On Thursday, March 30, 2017, students will discuss Black art and tour our hallways to view the art of our students. Discussions will surround intentionality and the power of art for critical engagement.

During the open forum today, students took a quiz to uncover their identities as they relate to privilege. This quiz was based on the pivotal work of Peggy McIntosh’s (1988) essay, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack (https://www.pcc.edu/resources/illumination/documents/white-privilege-essay-mcintosh.pdf). It has since been expanded beyond white privilege to include issues related to the privilege of being heterosexual, thin, cisgender, middle-to-upper class, able-bodied, etc. This quiz was used to help students begin to identify their unacknowledged advantages. Although this was a difficult concept for some students to grasp, as it is often easier to identify ways you are marginalized, it hopefully helped our students be able to see an identity that they do not hold. Our student leaders (and East High leaders) at Youth Leadership Summit: Dialogues on Race Penn State Harrisburg. It was wonderful to see how comfortable our students are talking about such an uncomfortable topic as race. They are proof that listening and sharing your own personal story can begin to uncover how racism shapes EVERYONE's identity. In case you missed it! We held our first annual Cultural Potluck on December 21, 2016, in the cafeteria! It was a wonderful time for staff and students to interact and try various different food from different cultures, many of which our students and staff represent.
