Perched above public streets, they are birdlike things, weatherproof, and they photograph every passing car and file it in a searchable national database. Somebody cut two of them in half at Washington Avenue and Westcott in Houston, spray-painted the wreckage, and left an American flag on one of them. Police were notified on the morning of the Fourth of July. Somebody severed a camera in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The police department posted the photograph itself and collected more than twenty thousand comments. “Not all heroes wear capes.” “Give them a medal.” Here is what the cameras do when nobody cuts them down. Cops use them to hunt immigrants and to follow ICE targets across state lines and to find women who ended pregnancies in states where that is a crime and to watch exes and to watch women they want, without a warrant and without a judge. A cop types a reason in a box and the box does not check. A man in Burleson, Texas, told deputies his girlfriend had taken abortion pills. He showed them the photographs, the FedEx envelope, the instructions. Deputies opened a death investigation into a non-viable fetus, and the district attorney told them the state could not charge her, and they searched anyway: 83,345 cameras across 6,809 networks, a month of everywhere she had been. The reason they typed was had an abortion, search for female. The search reached Illinois and Washington, where what she did was legal. They found her in Dallas. She came into the sheriff’s office a week later, and they thought she had come to explain the fetus, and she had come to report that the man who called them had put a gun to her head. A sheriff in Jerome County, Idaho ran his wife’s plate more than seven hundred times in three months. He typed the same reason every time. Test. The attorney general found nothing to charge him with. He retired in April. The Institute for Justice counts at least twenty-two officers who used the system to track people they were romantically interested in, and calls that almost certainly an undercount. And the cameras keep falling.

They let Garth Ennis do a sequel to the one-shot he did for the marvel zombies anthology a year or two ago, which centered on Frank Castle attempting to mercy kill a zombified Daredevil after the latter is captured by human survivors and made to participate in a zombie pit-fighting ring. “Undefeated” played against the (overblown, only conditionally accurate) idea that Garth Ennis hates superheroes, since the entire thematic backbone of the thing is that Frank is apparently the only guy left on earth to whom the character of the heroes while alive still means anything, and he’s taken it upon himself to punish the survivors who mock and degrade them in the aftermath of their failure to save the world.

Not only is Jenna Jacobs (the character in the green coat) partaking in homophobia, but the other character, President Josiah Bartlet (and as a consequence, The West Wing’s writers), are unintentionally partaking in a form of anti-semitism - anti-Judaism. This is because Bartlet is making it out as though the Torah (The Jewish holy book often called the “Old Testament”) is an archaic and cruel manuscript, which often leads to the even worse assumption of “if the Torah is evil and Jews follow the Torah, then Jews must be evil”. Ideas like that have previously lead to countless pogroms and even a Holocaust - which is why anti-Judaism is so harmful.

 Let’s debunk Jacobs’ claims and answer Bartlet’s questions though: 

Ancient Hebrew is a difficult-to-interpret language. As a result, there is a wide variety of Jewish interpretations of this verse - many Jews do believe that Leviticus 18:22 states that homosexual acts (differing from homosexuality) is an abomination, but many don’t - see an in-depth study of the text from this point of view here. As Jacobs is so obviously taking a Xian interpretation of the text, I’d also recommend gaychristian101.com for info on the Xian New Testament’s supposed anti-homosexual verses as well if you’re interested in that. 

 Exodus 21:7 does tolerate female indentured servitude (not slavery), and we know that servitude can be one of the most unequal institution on Earth; Yet to Jews this tolerance is so obviously about the redistribution of wealth and in an ironic way, using that very institution to achieve equality that it’s almost funny other groups could interpret it any other way. Think of it like this: In ancient times, if you were a woman who’s parents couldn’t afford to pay a dowry, you couldn’t find a husband, and in such a patriarchal society that was practically a death sentence. So the Torah came up with a solution. It allowed impoverished parents to send their daughters to work for wealthy families and in return for her work, after 6 years she could marry her master or one of her master’s sons (Exodus 21:9-10 makes it clear that at this point she is to be treated equally as a wife, and not as a indentured servant); If there was any objection to the marriage, she can be redeemed for a lower sum of money and either way, the cycle of poverty is discontinued and a social construct is changed. According to the Talmud (A secondary Jewish holy text) there are 39 categories of work. According to Exodus 34:21 it is prohibited to perform these 39 tasks on the Sabbath (which is a Saturday, not a Sunday like many believe) and Numbers 15:32-36 does designate this prohibition a capital crime; But what many don’t realise is that the Talmud also has a ridiculously complex list of requirements for the death penalty to actually be carried out, which you can see here. The list actually makes it so hard to impose this punishment that commentators for centuries have concluded that the death penalty is only designated as a punishment to warn against the severity of the crime, not to actually be carried out.

The Torah prohibition against crossbreeding things, including seeds, is called Kil’ayim. The Talmud dedicates no less than 77 Mishnahs (work of rabbinic literature) to the discussion of Kil’ayim and why it’s prohibited. Like many things in Judaism, no one is 100% sure why it’s prohibited but some commentators have suggested that it’s because when we crossbreed we are being arrogant as we are implying that G-d didn’t create all necessary things already. It isn’t forbidden to benefit from crossbreeding however.  See point 3 for info on capital punishment.

Sha’atnez, the mixing of linen and wool in garments, is a subcategory of Kil’ayim, meaning we aren’t 100% sure what it’s rationale is, but we can guess; One common explanation is that mixing a thread from an animal (wool) and a thread from a plant (linen) constitutes a form of witchcraft, which is prohibited for a myriad of reasons, including the fact that superstition when taken too far can be dangerous and because it can imply that one has a god complex. Again, see point 3 for info on capital punishment. 

So please, to the WW writers, OP and all who liked and reblogged this, think about how you may be doing as much harm as cherry picking Bible bashers when you spread this flawed theology, would you?

Also, one very important thing to note is that before the spread of the Christian gospels, no one understood the Torah as being for anyone but the Jews. It was (passed down/written) for the Jews alone. The laws it contains are the terms of our covenant with our G-d. Jews have no interest in converting non-Jews to Judaism, or forcing them to follow our laws, or judging them for not doing so. While I understand why this scene may be cathartic to some, it’s ultimately two people steeped in Christianity arguing about a text that really isn’t theirs, full of laws that don’t apply to them which neither of them even want to follow

You will notice that almost every text people point to about how the bible is bad is from the Old Testament and almost every text people point to about how the bible is good is from the New Testament. Despite the fact that the NT has regressive elements and the OT has progressive ones. Surely this says nothing about people’s (yes inclusing athiests and antitheists, this is about you too) subconcious views of Judaism and Christianity

you know what actually pisses me off? when I finally start to feel a smidge of confidence in my writing ability and then some JERK POSTS A SINGLE LINE FROM A TERRY PRATCHETT NOVEL AND IT’S BETTER THAN ANYTHING I WILL EVER WRITE NO MATTER HOW MANY MILLENNIA I SPEND TRYING!

Terry was a professional writer from the age of 17. He worked as a journalist which meant that he had to learn to research, write and edit his own work very quickly or else he’d lose his job.

He was 23 when his first novel was published. After six years of writing professionally every single day. The Carpet People was a lovely novel, from a lovely writer, but almost all of Terry’s iconic truth bomb lines come from Discworld.

The Colour of Magic, the first ever Discworld novel was published in 1983. Terry was 35 years old. He had been writing professionally for 18 years. His career was old enough to vote, get married and drink. We now know that at 35 he was, tragically, over half way through his life. And do you know what us devoted, adoring Discworld fans say about The Colour of Magic? “Don’t start with Colour of Magic.”

It is the only reading order rule we ever give people. Because it’s not that great. Don’t get me wrong, very good book, although I’ll be honest I’ve never been able to finish it, but it’s nowhere near his later stuff. Compare it to Guards Guards, The Fifth Elephant, the utterly iconic Nightwatch and it pales in comparison because even after nearly 20 years of writing, half a lifetime of loving books and storytelling Terry was still learning.

He was a man with a wonderful natural talent, yes. But more importantly he worked and worked and worked to be a better writer. He was writing up until days before he died.  He spent 49 years learning and growing as a writer, taking so much joy in storytelling that not even Alzheimer’s could steal it from him. He wouldn’t want that joy stolen from you too.

Terry was a wonderful, kind, compassionate, genius of a writer. And all of this was in spite of many many people telling him he wasn’t good enough. At the age of five his headmaster told him that he would never amount to anything. He died a knight of the realm and one of the most beloved writers ever to have lived in a country with a vast and rich literary tradition. He wouldn’t let anyone tell him that he wasn’t good enough. And he wouldn’t want you to think you aren’t good enough. He especially wouldn’t want to be the reason why you think you aren’t good enough. 

You’re not Terry Pratchett. 

You are you.

And Terry would love that.

I only ever had a chance to talk to Terry Pratchett once, and that was in an autograph line.  I’d bought a copy of The Carpet People, which was his very first book, and he looked at it with a faint air of concern.  “You realise that I wrote that when I was very young,” he said, in warning.

“Yes,” I said.  “But I like seeing how authors grow.”

He brightened and reached for his pen.  “That’s all right then,” he said, and signed.
