Say a Prayer for Peace
Tim stood, Valerie behind him, the gun in front of him, and he knew then that there was no way they were both getting out of the dead-end alleyway that they had been cornered into unscathed. However, if he played his cards right, Valerie could run away and Tim...
Well, he'd be okay in the end too.
That was the nice thing about the end that he had learned to accept a long time ago. Once it was there, there was no avoiding it. It was between you and whatever followed and that- well, that you had no choice but to roll with.
The familiar flash of metal off of the barrel of a pistol had Tim acting faster than perhaps anyone in the situation, anyone that didn’t know him and his history, would have expected. He shoved Valerie towards the clearest and most direct escape route that he was now making by pulling the attention of their assailant to himself and himself alone. His booted foot dragged over the dirty asphalt, but he didn’t let the pain force him to misstep as he covered her retreat, taking a rushing move towards the assailant.
The moment he had moved to allow her to escape, he had accepted the click that sounded only when someone was ready to pull the trigger. It ricocheted in his head and burned into his brain like a signature on his death warrant. He had already been shot once that month, but he knew in his gut that the second time wasn't going to be a blow that he would walk away from.
Staring down that barrel, Valerie fleeing the scene, Tim thought less about what was to come and more about all that had passed. His life being taken by someone who meant to do nothing but harm while his friend got away. Well, that was karma for his past sins and so he accepted that, happy that he was at least getting the chance to clear some more red from his ledger even in his final moments.
Then his regrets came forth.
He wondered if his parents would be proud of the path he had chosen now, or if they would see his death as a pointless loss when they had so desperately pleaded with him time and time again to settle down into something tame. To find happiness in the mediocre as they had for themselves. Tim thought about what may have happened had he asked Amelia to marry him that night when she came to him about Patrick, or if he had knelt on the hard floor of her gallery in their room after familiarizing himself with every inch of her perfect body and pledged his heart, body, and soul to her until death did them part. Until this did them part. Tim wondered if Quinn remembered the name of the gelato place in Florence, and if she would go again once he was gone. Maybe she would get the caramel and remember kissing the taste from his lips as they walked across the Ponte Vecchio. Tim wondered if Elijah would let go of the fact another male figure was leaving his life, though he hoped his impact was far more positive. He wondered about the detectives who were going to follow after him, about his buddies who had helped get him out of his addiction and back on his feet.
He wondered if passing was going to be more like falling asleep, taking a punch, or shooting up.
Tim had his regrets, but he was grateful to have more good than bad playing in front his eyes as he stared down the person in front of him and heard the telltale sound of a gunshot. It was such a distinctive sound he would recognize anywhere, especially at this range, because of his training. But now that recognition came from the blood now seeping through his previously pristine white shirt.
He thought of Quinn's smile, her laugh when he was being an idiot just to get the chance to hear it. He thought of Amelia's eyes, how they closed and she sighed when his lips caressed her stomach. He thought of his buddies, the peace he would find with those he had already lost so long ago. He thought about 21 guns, and then he thought no more.

casino night starter | open to all
Between Skylar & Dom, Quinn approaching him about Tim, and his little spat with Miguel, Anton’s night was quickly taking a turn for the worse, and along with it any good mood he might’ve had coming in. He lay with his head down against the bar, nursing the drink next to him. “Save your breath.” He said when he felt the stool next to him become occupied, his voice muffled from his hunched over state. “I’m not in the mood to socialize.”
“And to think, I was just trying to buy you a refill, mate,” Tim commented as he leaned against the bar next to the man that he had his suspicions about being the one who put him in the god awful boot he was still having to hobble around in. Leo had recognized the description he had gathered regarding the man, had enough of a hunch that they were watching him closely even before the event that night. Now, Tim just needed the other man to look him in the eyes, to speak a bit more aggressively, and he would know for a fact that it was him.
Initially, Tim was interested in revenge. He wanted to drag the other man out of the venue and leave him in the alley with a bullet in his skull, good riddance to the fucker who had jumped him in his own home. Suppressing the darker part of himself, the part that he had run from ages ago, Tim knew that there was far more opportunity in this than just fulfilling his need to get even. “Free booze makes any night better, I would wager.”

camillexrodriguez:
Camille turned her head when she heard a voice, a smile coming along her features. “Ah, well… Thank you,” she lifted her hand up to flick the ends of her hair back dramatically as she let a chuckle slip from her lips as she turned herself to lean her side up against the bar, glancing down Tim. “You clean up nicely too, McCallen,” her gaze stopping at the boot on his foot as she let her eyes furrow only slightly before lifting her eyes back up towards him. “Really? You got that thing on your foot and your concerned about my feet?”
“So I’ve been told,” Tim replied with dialed-up cockiness, making a shoe of smoothing down the front of his classic suit before fixing his tie in hopes of eliciting at least a smile from his friend at his antics. When she brought up his booted foot, he shrugged his shoulders as if to say ‘well, what can you do?’ “I’m cleared to walk on it for substantial periods of time, doctor said so and everything.” Tim informed Cami, leaving out the fact that it was actually only supposed to be for short periods of time and that crutches were recommended. “Bet I could still outrun you in those death traps.” He teased, eyes flickering down to her heels.
nylalucas:
“Yup. Medical examiner for you and ya mama.” She answered his question with the slogan she’d created for herself, just barely singing it.
“And they don’t want our weaknesses they want our strength,” she brought her hands in front of her face and squeezed them into fists, “They want to leech it out of us so that the only energy we have left gets spent on attending events like this.” She truly did believe this, but she always had a hard time explaining just what she meant by it to people at events like these, assuming anybody actually talked to her. Thankfully, Tim seemed to already get it.
She pursed her lips at his remark about her compliment, pretending to think about whether or not she agreed with him.
“Well the truth is, I don’t mind compliments. I just mind the people who give the compliments. And… giving compliments to… people,” her eyes wandered as she recognized her lack of consistent live-human contact was showing, “but yours was easy.” She waved a hand dismissively in the air, deciding not to explain what she meant by that sentiment either.
“I’m sure my mum will be thrilled to be included.” Tim commented simply, not needing to dwell on their familiarity any longer now that his suspicions had been confirmed. If she would have left it hanging, that’s when he would have pushed the subject. The need to be in the know was not only a part of Tim’s career, it was a part of his nature. “I can’t decide if you’re talking about social parasites or capitalism any longer, love.” He said, having nodded through her pointed breakdown of the game that was being played all around them that had nothing to do with the casino set-up.
As she stated that giving his compliment was easy, Tim’s smile grew and became perhaps a bit more roguish. He would take what he could get, and already he was enjoying the woman’s strange but interesting insight on things. “I’m Tim by the way. I also work for the NYPD, but as a detective.” He informed her, holding a hand out for her to take. “And since we’re on to the exchanging of compliments portion of our interaction, I would like to say that you look stunning. A rather unique look for the night as well.”
quinndavis:
The male held a point as he led her out to a less crowded area, their steps in line with one another. At least until suddenly he slowed their pace and his ensuing words caught her full attention. The beating, the Russian, and all the unmentioned things about his job–even the woman who had stolen his heart. It all suddenly made too much sense, he was investigating the gang. This was why Isaac had caught his awareness, and Quinn felt her hold tighten somewhat on his arm. They were now in a hot zone.
“Don’t,” The single word settled in a whispered tone as she caught his stare, features composed. Because if he started asking questions she couldn’t answer, the entire game would shift into something neither would win. “Do you trust me?” There were Devils and Royals all around them, mixed in between the unaware citizens of New York. Even now as she tugged him towards a side area, slipping out on the main balcony area.
Tim could see it on her face, some sense of realization and it was then that he knew that Quinn was more involved than he had even originally suspected. Whether that was because she was simply friends with some of the Devils, did work for them, or was a part of them remained to be seen. Still, her one word command kept him from pushing the issue any further. Quinn knew him just as he knew her, and there was a respect there that would never be breached- not by either of them.
“You know I do.” Tim said simply, holding her gaze before allowing himself to be pulled from the main venue and onto the balcony. He gave the area a quick sweep due to habit and the preference to keep on living before his gaze returned to the dark-haired woman that he had known for far too long to be surprised that she had potentially gotten caught up in some bullshit like the Devils. “Should I trust you?” He asked her once they had come to a stop. His words weren’t accusatory, but simple and honest, just as he expected her to be with him. “Are you in danger?” Tim added, knowing good and well that was a hard question to answer honestly. Every moment was filled with danger in some way- just more for some than others.
ameliakfischer:
Trust. The very sentiment Patrick had uttered just the prior night, and as she stared at the tiled floor, she found herself considering the powerful meaning. Because so much credence had been shattered, the very essence left in shambles, and now she couldn’t even bring herself to meet his gaze. Which was as he stated the very thing she had been dreading, but understood should come, Amelia finally spoke once more.
“They say I’m a confident woman, someone who demands respect and to be seen.” The words were whispered, rather quietly though she knew he’d catch each one. “Who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and fears nothing, yet you have scared me since the very first night.” Exhaling she finally dragged her gaze up to meet his, copper to cerulean.
“So tell me,” Turning her arm just slightly, she allowed her inner forearm to be seen, the three letters forevermore inked upon her skin. “–is goodbye any different than running?”
Despite how Amelia’s voice had dropped, despite the way she still refused to look at him, Tim didn’t miss a single word that was uttered from between her perfect lips. This was important. It had been building up, the need for both of them to let go of one another as much as they possibly could, and Tim knew that every word, every reaction and expression shift, mattered. So often Amelia spoke prose, but it was the look on her face and the emotion behind her eyes that really gave her away if you just knew where to look.
“The unknown is scary. The familiar is comfortable.” Tim said softly, validating her admittance and adding a small one of his own, no matter how subtle it was. It was out of his nature to speak so indirectly, especially to Amelia, but the man was well aware of the boundaries that had to be between them that they had so pointedly ignored before.
When her eyes met his, Tim felt his breath catch, his heart stutter in his throat, but despite all of that, he still caught her movement and his gaze was pulled down to the scrawl on the inside of her arm just as she voiced the question that had been bouncing around in his own mind. The sight of the letters, ones that she couldn’t possibly know he had etched into his own skin, made him want. In that moment, he ached and yearned for so many things that he knew he couldn’t have. Things that he knew that if they were obtainable, he could no longer let himself have.
His hand raised to his chest, fingertips brushing over the skin there. How telling it was that she had their promise tattooed on her arm while his was over his heart. Symbolism, Tim realized, was perhaps as important as he literature teachers had always insisted it to be. “I believe that is dependent on the reason for the goodbye, love.” He told her softly.
quinndavis:
Their game was an old one, but each knew it well as Quinn pressed her lips into an all too familiar smirk. “It’s a shame you have that boot on,” Letting her graze drop to the rather obvious covering, she pursed her lips. “–I can think of a few choice ways to spend the evening, and it all starts with a feet sweeping dance. Yet it seems that once again, you can’t satisfy me, McCallen.”
And then she was laughing while looping her arm through his, deciding that the table gambling could wait. “Let the games properly begin.”
“When have I ever let a little injury stop me?” Tim asked in return, more than interested in whatever scenario was playing through the woman’s mind. He was remembering pressing her back against ancient brick walls in a shadowed Parisian alley, her loose dress allowing her to easily hook her legs around his waist. There was the memory of their sun-kissed skin, salt on his tongue as his lips devoured her on the balcony of their room in Cairo. This would be yet another adventure for them. “I am always up for a challenge, Tiger.” Tim replied with a playful grin, never one to be put off by her disparaging words as he had seen her come undone under him, over him, against him- plenty of times before.
Resting a hand on hers after it was looped through his arm, Tim wasted no time in leading them away from the busier areas of the venue. The event was boisterous and busy, the casino theme being enough to have people letting loose of their inhibitions when plied with booze and the chance to win it big. Whether it was a move in their game, or his own dire need to know, Tim was unsure, but as they stepped into a less crowded hallway, he looked down at the woman on his arm. “You chose an interesting date for the evening, Tiger." He commented simply.
You’ve got a war in your head And it’s tearing you up inside.

quinndavis:
Any other woman would’ve found themselves stunned by his actions. But Quinn had never been the other woman, as her gaze found his own, watching just casually till something out of the corner of her eye had caught her attention. As if she couldn’t avoid it, she saw a familiar figure leading another out of the room, their arms interlocked. And unable to tear her gaze away, she followed till they disappeared just past the archway. Interesting.
However, it was Tim’s next movements that returned her to reality, the kisses reminding her that her present was rather expectant. “Mack,” She warned, the male now turning her hand over, his lips finding their way along her digits. It was enough to send a flutter through her stomach as she took a step closer, her fingers reaching up to tug at the hem of his suit jacket. “–you know I don’t play games I can’t win, so are you sure you wanna start one here?” They had done much worse in fancier places, and Quinn wasn’t about to back down now.
Just like that, he and her were on the same page once again. When it came to Quinn, she matched him step for step and he never found himself having to reach out blindly for her. He knew she was there, and where exactly there was. While Quinn had never been easy to understand, she held her secrets close to her chest, they still seemed to understand one another, even with the time that had passed.
“Love, I was under the impression that we were already playing.” Tim told her, the slightest quirk of his brow initiating the challenge that he knew she would rise to meet.
nylalucas:
“The mall,” she blurted. She was fully aware that he himself was not asking the question he’d referenced. He was simply making a joke. However, she found it easier to answer the hypothetical inquiry than offer any of her own humor back, though a small smile did play on her lips. She sized him up earnestly, eyes washing over him with the slightest glint, lashes batting when her gaze returned home to his face. Then, she shook her head when she noticed he was gesturing to the crowd.
“I’m not going out there,” she spoke quickly before continuing, “So, where’d you get your shoes from?” She reached a hand out to drag his suit jacket away from his waist, twisting the fabric in between her thumb and pointer finger. “And this isn’t a bad suit either.” It was true she did find joy in it’s threading. It felt like pretty good quality for what he must have paid for it.
The rushed answer had Tim’s interest that much more peaked as he considered the woman before him. She looked familiar, vaguely so, and it was only as she finally smiled that how exactly he knew her clicked into place in his mind. “You work for the NYPD, do you not?” Tim questioned, feeling confident in his guess as to just where he had seen her before. If he wasn’t mistaken, she was one of the medical examiners in the city. He didn’t spend all that much time with any of them, and there were more than a few spread across the different precincts and districts, but he recognized her.
“They’re like a pack of dingos, yeah? Waiting for a weakness to chomp down on and drag you off into the bush.” Tim commented, affirming her reluctance to join the masses as he was often reluctant to do so himself. However, plastering on a charming smile and chatting people up was all but a line in his job description.
“Funnily enough, much like your own, I found these bad boys in store. Paid for them and everything.” Tim joked, eyes curiously following her hand as she fiddled with his suit jacket. “That was nearly a compliment, love. Just borderline so.” He said, playfully pitching his tone to be a faux warning.
quinndavis:
Tim had been many things to the woman over the years, a best friend, a lover, a confidante, a rock, and even an annoyance at times. Which meant she’d grown used to his tricks, and notably enough his charm. However, even with all this practice being put to good use, she couldn’t help the trivial way her heart rate still picked up. “And only with you would I share it,” Grinning, she caught his hands just before he’d pulled back, and casually pressed the very index finger that had previously rested atop her pulse, against her lips. “–all on red, aye?” Nipping gently at his finger, as if they weren’t being watched by many other eyes, she let his finger drag down her lip for just a moment before turning suddenly and tossing the dice.
And just like that, they rolled perfectly, all crimson.
The way that Quinn so easily held his gaze would have led him to believe that she wasn’t interested in the game he was playing had he been a stupider man, but he felt her pulse jump under his fingertip even before she was making the move of her own. “Well, I’m honored to say the least.” Tim told her in return, his low voice husky as she raised his finger to her lips, and yet still, it was nearly playful.
The sharpness of her nip lingered even after she had turned away from his nod of confirmation, the two of them were both draped in all black but what sparked between them was red.
“Flawless execution, Tiger. The build-up could have been better, but still stunning overall.” Tim said, not being able to resist pushing her buttons, not when her lipstick colored his fingertips. “I do believe it was something in the wrist.” He added, reaching to pick up one of her hands, raising it to his eye level as if for inspection. “Perhaps here?” He suggested, lips brushing over her knuckles. “Or here?” A kiss to her fingertips as he flipped her hand in his grasp. After looking at her slender hand for a moment longer as if perplexed by the appendage, Tim gently dropped it. “Ah, I think it may have been in your form after all.” He finally decided, his grin unashamedly roguish.
