Much as I enjoy Don’t Eat The Neighbors, I do think the lack of female characters makes Lucy’s circumstances (and my aversion to Rabbit) even more irritating for me. Not only is she the only major character that’s female, but she’s also parentified to high Hell and the most mature and logical character in the whole show. Which is already unfortunate in most kids shows that feature a Smurfette kind of situation, but she’s also nine-years-old.
And to say ‘well this probably made any girls viewing the show feel accomplished or like they had a good role model’ just seems icky. Being pushed into an adult role when you’re child, especially a female child, is not a positive thing and perpetuating it as a privilege is uncomfortable at best.
BUT I am aware this is lost media from the early 2000s and my ramblings are in hindsight so this isn’t really criticism that you should take to heart as much as me just explaining why I don’t like this aspect of the show. So no need for the ‘it was a different time’ schpiel. I know.
((Idk if I should also talk about how Fox giving Norman Bates/Patrick Bateman parable and that’s tied to vilifying gay men or just men that display openly feminine traits bc I know such analysis is silly af but at the same time 👀))
