The Clay of My Life

Hello, thank you for checking out my blog! Well I guess since you are reading this you want to know a little about me... Ok, this will be tough, I have never been very good at describing myself. Well... I guess I will just list you some of my interests since that is the part about me that is most relevant to this blog. I spent my day reading (fantasy/sci-fi) books, watching anime, listening to music (generally of the metal variety), reaching manga (my favorite pastime), playing video games (Usually, but not limited to, RPGs). I enjoy funny things so I my blog will be full of them. As an imaginative individual I enjoy looking at other people's creative solutions and interesting objects so you will see some of those scattered around. Oh, and I also love nature. I think is beautiful in every way, shape, and form. I make audio posts daily and I do my best to make at least ten posts a day. Oh, did I mention that I play quidditch? I play all the quidditch. Our visit to Anime Boston was so lovely! I was exploding spaghetti from every pocket I had each time someone recognized us. Thank you so much to everyone who hugged us and stopped us to say hello! And to the cosplayers! You made my LIFE! I was so shaky I had to make Alex take photos, as my spaghetti laden hands were not up to the task. It was such a thrill to get to meet everyone! Thank you for all the drawings and buttons and fun times!! And thanks to my awesome buds for hanging out after too! I hope we can see everyone again sometime!

The familiar trigonometric functions can be geometrically derived from a circle.

But what if, instead of the circle, we used a regular polygon?

In this animation, we see what the “polygonal sine” looks like for the square and the hexagon. The polygon is such that the inscribed circle has radius 1.

We’ll keep using the angle from the x-axis as the function’s input, instead of the distance along the shape’s boundary. (These are only the same value in the case of a unit circle!) This is why the square does not trace a straight diagonal line, as you might expect, but a segment of the tangent function. In other words, the speed of the dot around the polygon is not constant anymore, but the angle the dot makes changes at a constant rate.

Since these polygons are not perfectly symmetrical like the circle, the function will depend on the orientation of the polygon.
